You guys and gals are the > greatest! > > Shirley > Shirley I would NEVER download a microsoft update based on an e-mail. It is to easy to click on your windows update in your browser, at least if you use IE, and it takes you direct to microsoft. The site then scans your machine to determine what you need and you can chose to download the ones you want. This is all based on the assumption you have not set your browser to automatically download all microsoft updates. I would NEVER do that either. There are some I chose not to download. I am very parnoid about urls sent to me unsolicited for me to use for downloads If in fact it is genuine you have lost nothing by going to the microsoft site on your own and checked for the download. Just took you an extra step or 2. The same holds true when I get e-mails suppposodly from my bank, sometimes I have never heard of the bank, or from my credit card company, maybe I have that. I NEVER click on an enclosed url. I go to the site and search it on my own. Sorry for being windy but this is something that we all can avoid by taking a few careful steps. 3. As others have pointed out, Microsoft does not send emails regarding updates. Don't click on any links in the message and delete it. If you are concerned about Windows/Microsoft updates make sure you have automatic updates enabled. You can also go to the "real" Windows Update site by clicking on "Windows Update". It should be on your Start Menu somewhere. A good rule of thumb is to never, ever respond to or click on any links in an email regarding program updates or an email asking you to verify your username, password, or personal information. Those kinds of emails are either contain viruses, send you to a malicious website, or try to steal your personal information. If in doubt contact the company in question directly using the websites, email addresses, and telephone numbers you usually use to contact them. I hope this helps! Kim

    3. I usually Google the attachment name upon receiving such emails: Searching on Installer6.exe reveals: This is a mass-mailing worm that poses as a legitimate email from Microsoft Windows Update. It is official name is: W32/Swen@MM or W32/Swen-A or W32/Gibe-F. The worm also attempts to propagate via peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks, such as Kazaa, via IRC and also via newsgroups. Furthermore, it terminates running antivirus and firewall software running on an infected system. It was first discovered on the 18th September 2003. The attachment may also be called Install6.exe The above was on www.updatexp.com but other websites tell a similar story. It is surprising for how long such emails circulate. On the contrary, Microsoft do send security update bulletins, either by email, RSS feed, or Windows Live Alert, if you subscribe to them: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/notify.mspx These are sent in a special format which helps identify them as being genuine Microsoft Bulletins.
