Thanks Art - I tried Google too, but it did not seem to indicate whether it was a good thing or not. I do not have Vista - I am sticking to XP Pro for the time being. The above program is trying to access my PC. I do not know what it is and have denied it access, but is it something I should have or is there a danger in allowing access? Joan.

This is a comment for all. I made a decision a long time ago after losing a bunch of e-mails that I had saved NEVER to save e-mails again. If there is something I want to keep for whatever reason I cut and past the whole e-mail of the applicable part into a word document and save the document. One obvious advantage is you don't have to be online to check your info that you have saved. If you keep it with the e-mail address then it is easy enough to write back. I never have more that 50 or so e-mails in box at any one time and I subscribe to anumber of rootsweb list. Doug Burnett Satellite Beach FL ************** Planning your summer road trip? Hi all, Well the problem with the errant .pst file has been fixed at last and to say that the granddaughter is very pleased is a huge understatement - she is laughing again:- She rang me 5 minutes ago to say she downloaded & installed all the MS XP updates overnight and this morning tried once again to find & fix the old .pst file and lo & behold it asked if she wanted to fix the problem and all the old emails and more importantly the old address etc came back. One very relieved young lady. The program to fix it all - C\program files\common files\system\MAPI\1033\NT\scanpst.exe - Thank you again to those who responded - I guess she & I have both learned something very useful out of this. She lives about 260km away, but we saw each other last weekend and the problem appears to be fixed. The IT man who checked her computer tried unsuccessfully to repair the pst file using several methods and programs but the file just couldn't be read or fixed. So the company's 350 odd email addresses are apparently gone. The machine would come up with the BSOD, just sitting idle & not being directly accessed. He eventually changed the mouse and that seems to have fixed the BSOD problem and the computer now works reliably again, but the pst file is apparently unusable. His explanation was that Outlook is very susceptible to failure, if it happens to be active when the machine fails for any reason. I guess that's fairly obvious. She now has an automatic back-up system in place which backs up the selected computer files at the touch of a button. So that's some progress no doubt. Another handy way to keep email is to send it directly to EverNote and its applicable category. Thunderbird mail has an EverNote clipper button, so just click that and off the whole email goes, or select a section and then click the button. Later you can print all these emails in chronological order in pdf. I don't know whether the other mail programs have clipper buttons. You can check this out yourself at http://evernote.com/about/what_is_en/ They are about to release v.3 and they've changed the look of their website, so it would take me some time to learn the new navigation. There's a free version that can do almost anything you could want. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html WarnerCaldwell@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 4/11/2008 9:05:16 AM W. A Google search gets 186,000 hits. It seems to have to do with Vista, which I don't have. You might try google and follow some of the links. OK I'll do a little research on this. I have used AOL since way back when it became available. But, I have never used "folders" for email. Bob **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. (http://travel.aol.com/travel-guide/united-states?ncid=aoltrv00030000000016)
No Bob I didnt do either of the things you said. By email folders I mean that when I get an email I save it to a folder ie Family or someone I am researching . Wendyf
Wendy---Did you happen to have clicked on AOL'S recent offer of a new v ersion of AOL? If so, you will have to do some steps to get your stuff over to this version. I run AOL 9.0 SE (Security edition) I accepted the new offer--and hated it. I believe it was version 10.0 I also got the AOL Desk top, tool bar, or whatever they called it. But, I had nor uninstalled the old 9.0 version. So, I went back to START ALL PROGRAMS Found the AOL 9.0 program file--and made a new shortcut on my XP Desk top. I have now gone back to using 9.0. Hope this helps. But, if you didn't change versions, this won't be helpful. I have one question. What do you mean by your "email FOLDERS"? Also, did you change email addresses--if so, the email info is tied only to the old email address. Bob **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. Hi - other than it being in a place that a "vanilla" installation of Outlook is looking for it, it could be that the pst file has been corrupted. All is not lost since there is a Microsoft utiliuty that repairs pst files. I use it once every month or two just to check. For my computer, it is found in C:\program files\windows nt\windows messaging and c:\program files\common files\system\mapi\1033\nt I don't the difference - both say they are v5.1.2600.5508 but they have different sizes. Both seem to work OK. Two possibilities I can think of. Is the pst file in question in the place Outlook expects it to be? If not you can move or copy it to the right place And, yes I think you can be read. I can't check it for you at the moment but you can Import a file into Outlook. From memory it's File>Import and follow your nose. When you get to the point that you have to specify where from, Browse your way to the pst file. Hopefully all this will apply in your case. Good luck. Tony
