I too bought an Epson Perfection 2580 scanner and completely agree with Nancy's comments, except I have not tried scanning negatives. Rita _http://hometown.aol.co.uk/greenways6/myhomepage/refpage.html_ (http://hometown.aol.co.uk/greenways6/myhomepage/refpage.html) Dora, I bought an Epson Stylus CX 7800 scanner that is supposed to copy slides or negatives. It was priced under $200.00 (don't remember the exact amount) but I have not been happy with it, doesn't do a very good job. I first tried an old slide then I took a new negative and it was still not a sharp and clear picture. It does a great job printing pictures that I have accumulated on the computer such as from the digital camera or received in the mail or even when I scanned a photo. It seems to go thru ink cartridges terribly fast too but you can buy the colors individually if desired. Nancy

Hi Art There are usually fiche viewers on e bay and some are bargains However a word of warning, there are also some small hand held viewers which are not much use at all, they sound good and not expensive but you get what you pay for If there are any banks or motor dealerships nearby they are worth a try, most have computerised and kept a few "just in case" but most realise that technology is only going one way Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) >I haven't looked, but has anybody tried on e:bay or google? > > Art Seddon > Car dealers got rid of their microfiche readers years ago...however, > there may be one out there in someone's parts "attic"....I wish that I > had known about it when it happened....Marsha in WV > > n.east wrote: > >>A Microfiche reader may be your best bet. Hi all, Just a quick note of warning about ISP's. Since last Friday morning I have been unable to receive any emails. I could send emails and I could access the internet OK via my broadband connection. My ISP has no support out of normal working hours, (not that it would have made much difference) so I had to wait until this morning (Monday) to contact them interstate, by phone. Ah yes, that's right they said - your email address was removed on Friday during a cleanout, because it wasn't being used. I usually receive about 30 emails, or more, a day, so that's rubbish. That's OK, we'll give you a new address etc as of this morning they said and all will be go again. Yes, but what about all the emails I may have had since Friday morning and all over the weekend - they're gone she said. Gone - what do you mean they're gone!!! Well they are just gone - like, poof, gone. Not a happy little chap at the moment and they certainly haven't heard the last from me! Ray

Shirley wrote: > While on the subject of scanners, could someone tell me if there is a > relatively inexpensive scanner/printer that lets you read microfilm? > > I am still using XP with 1410 printer all in one. Many FHCs have microfilm scanners where you can scan to disk.. Are you asking about a scanner to look at you own personal microfilms or what? Ask at FHC in your area if they have the capability and if you can view and scan you own films, if that is what you want. do you just want to read microfilms, print out hard copies or scan to disk so you can print on your printer? a microfiche reader, unless it is a combination would not work well as a fiche image is about 1/2 inch inch by 3/8 wide. a fiche reader would not have a drive to advance the film and the magnifications lenses are much different for fiche and film. Google microfilm +reader|scanner. I find an Indus portable reader for $500. And last, PLEASE do not use the Digest Reference as the subject of your reply.

Any scanner that will copy negatives will also copy fiche. Once copied, you can manipulate them just like pics, including turning them to positive images and zooming. Insert microfilm / fiche into reader. Locate pages and save to laptop. - Took me about 2 trips to the library to get organized, then about 2 hours to get started working. Issue is finding a repository that will allow you to take their micro film / fiche home so you can scan. To-date, I have not been in a library that will allow you to use their scanner. OK. So now, another alternative is to take your laptop *AND* scanner that can copy negatives ... into the library ... then make digital copies. Much easier, if you can find the new digital film / fiche readers. --- Hcounter@aol.com wrote: > Any scanner that will copy negatives will also copy > fiche. CD-RW is rewritable but is not as stable. Backing up to CD's at all is iffy so you should have more than one copy. Even two is not necessarily sufficient. I lost many years of journals when both CD backups developed cracks for no known reason. The length of time CD's last is also debatable, anywhere from no time to a few years. Nowadays I back up to two external hard-drives, a collection of flash-drives and online at Mozy. Occasionally I'll throw something on a CD or DVD but I wouldn't make that my main back up. I think it's important to choose more than one option. Spread your important files around for security. The price of external storage has dropped so dramatically in the past couple of years, you might consider it. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Patricia wrote: > Could someone please remind me the difference between CD-R and CD-RW and which one I should use to do a backup of my F/H program > Many thanks > Pat > -------------------------------------- > Having trouble with your subscription?
