Sounds like a good idea. Does anyone know of a program capable of doing a search of spaces and replace with - on all of the photos in a directory? I have over 3500 jpg's in attached to my family file in Legacy and the prospect of doing each one manually and then reattaching is a bit daunting. Any suggestions? art Seddon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Bennett" <mitsy_9@yahoo.ca> To: <gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 4:12 AM Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Labelling photos Getting some good advice in this thread, but would like to add one Don't leave a space when naming any file, put a - dash or _ underscore. The reasoning is some computer programs may only look at a file name until the first blank space, making your photo unable to open. I get this advice from my brother who is a Oracle data base Programmer. He suggests labeling like this 20080430_001_touring_falls_01 or 19191119_mcvicar-brown_wed_scan He uses initials if there are many in the photo. 20000829_005_N_D_F_K_M I like the idea of using an extra space around the photo to add information. I do a lot of scanning of older photos from my parent's albums. If they have anything written on the back, I scan that too just to remind me later who was in the photo & it is nice to have it in their writing. No I had not heard of it. My goal was to NOT rely on a software program that someone else now or down the road in time could not open, or figure out. I have a sister that gets confused just opening a jpeg, which has taught me not to be high tech. I figure if she hits 'print', she'll get it all and then I'll explain how to crop to print to her when she complains. Actually I have that on all CD's I send to her too but she never reads instructions. I've got it explained how to print just the JPEG and how to print just the information below the JPEG, this allowing the info to be placed behind the photo when printed. -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JLB Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 4:19 AM To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Labelling photos I must have missed the beginning of this thread. Did you TRY the scanner on XP? I'm behind on emails, but to answer your question Thayne shown far below: I don't change anything when I put something on CD for someone. It's a shame technology can't copy a full title of a JPEG, but that's just the way it currently is (as far as I know of). As I have the information WITH each photo, and usually people copy things over into their own things, it is up to them to do their own organizing. An option to providing full JPEG titles is to do a full listing in something like Notepad (which anyone should be able to open) and also put that on the CD. -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of tcurtisGen Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2008 8:25 PM To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Photos Donna (History Buff) M. Your system works great for you, but when you send a photo to someone else, how to you label the electronic file? Do you change the filename? And if so, to what? How do you label each of the photos in the folder 1901 JONES - SMITH, Mary 1877-1924? Since family members are continually requesting images from me, I'm always looking for a better way to label the individual electronic filenames? Some of my filenames have been too long when I cut a CD. Note that I use the word images, because I also digitize birth/death certificates, etc. Any ideas would be appreciated. I must have missed the beginning of this thread. Have you heard of IPTC? PAF is still free. May not work on Vista, I don't know. They aren't updating it. But if you want reports you need the $9 Companion. I think that Legacy makes a free version. It does less than the $30 version, but I believe it can import and export GEDCOM's. Rather than printing your favorites list from IE, you can Export them as an html file and then Import into your new computer. You can find this option under File on the menu in IE. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Shirley wrote: > Hope some one can help with these two items. > > I am using XP / Compaq by HP and IE > > I would like to know how to print out my favorites > list. This is kind of a non-genealogy suggestion....but it applies to almost anyone who does genealogy. I find that my favorite shopping is often done at Office Depot (or it's equivalent if you have other choices in your town). These stores often send out $10 coupons via e-mail. Sometimes when I receive the coupon, I shop for the manilla folders, hanging files, CD's , ink, printer paper, legal pads, pens, etc that I seem to always need for this passion that I call a hobby. With the $10 coupon I buy rechargeable batteries and chargers.....that way I have basically free batteries to use for my mouse, etc....You need two to four extras over the amount that you need daily to keep some always charged. I don't worry about making the batteries last longer any more. Marsha in WV Hcounter@aol.com wrote: >That can happen as the battery is running down. At least that is what I >have noticed with mine. That can happen as the battery is running down. At least that is what I have noticed with mine. Get some batteries at the ready, it will just suddenly quit working. Hope some one can help with these two items. I am using XP / Compaq by HP and IE I would like to know how to print out my favorites list. When I had W98 there was an option for that, but can't locate it now. Planning to get new computer in about two months and want to be prepared. Won't want to keep all the fav's I have collected for the past few years. List would help to know what to keep. Also my cordless mouse seems to have gone berserk! It has a mind of its own, going in the opposite direction that I want. Any suggestions? Hello Paul, Re my query below, I did reply to you, but on searching my 'sent' box I can't see it listed at all, so can only assume that my reply was lost in space somewhere. To answer your question, I'm running Windows XP And in answer to your second question - yes, for my pains, I'm still Editor of Western Ancestor - in my 17th year. I will appreciate any help you can give me re this problem, but I am now seriously considering a new computer, and a new system - an Imac.
