I don't believe this issue is relative to Microsoft code. Other genealogy programs have the same issue, they just 'display' things so that everything appears correct to our human eyes. I believe the PC, i.e., Windows (all versions) use ASCII characters in filenames and thus sort using those characters. Your spreadsheet program uses numbers in the cells, not ASCII characters. I know, they both look the same, but in the world of computers they are not. For example, the number 1 for computers is 1, but the ASCII representation of '1' has a numeric value of 31. So if I was sorting numbers 1 - 15 they would look like this: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 When I sort the same ASCII characters, they use these numbers (remember ASCII '1' is numeric 31) and you would expect to see: ASCII '1' = numeric 31 ASCII '2' = numeric 32 ASCII '3' = numeric 33 ASCII '4' = numeric 34 ASCII '5' = numeric 35 ASCII '6' = numeric 36 ASCII '7' = numeric 37 ASCII '8' = numeric 38 ASCII '9' = numeric 39 ASCII '10' = numeric 31 & 30 (yes, there are two digits) ASCII '11' = numeric 31 & 31 ASCII '12' = numeric 31 & 32 ASCII '13' = numeric 31 & 33 ASCII '14' = numeric 31 & 34 ASCII '15' = numeric 31 & 35 ... so if I sort the numbers, not the ASCII representations, I really get: 31 31 30 31 31 31 32 31 33 31 34 31 35 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 ... or ASCII '1' ASCII '10' ASCII '11' ASCII '12' ASCII '13' ASCII '14' ASCII '15' ASCII '2' ASCII '3' ASCII '4' ASCII '5' ASCII '6' ASCII '7' ASCII '8' ASCII '9' ... does this help? I'm not a mathematician, but I have made a good living getting computers to do what I tell them (which by the way may not be what I want <g>). Note: I purposely left out the discussion about hex and binary (geek words). If someone else can explain this better, have at it. I hope that now we have a better understanding as to why Windows Explorer as well as other genealogy programs sort one way (ASCII representation) and a spreadsheet program (numbers) sorts another. -- Enjoy the Search!     3. I am not sure it is the saving program's fault. It could be that the sub-folder is write protected or the file itself. (Write protected and Read only are the same things, just said by people with different memory spans.) Either way, right click on the file or folder and choose Properties, If there is a check mark in the Hidden box, click the box to make it go away. Then load the file. By the way: Files sent to CDs are automatically write protected, files sent to flash memory drives are not and can be edited there on the flash drive. If you copy a file from a CD to your hard drive, it will still be write protected until you remove the read only attribute. Alfred D. I am able to create a document, save it on my flash drive - bring it up again from the flash drive, edit it and save it to the flash drive just as if I were using my hard drive. That is why I was so surprised when I got the message about it being a read-only file. I have never had that happen before. Hi Janet Apologies in advance if I have misunderstood your message but it is possible to edit and save files or documents on flash/thumb drives with a copy (using the same file name) of the file on the computer's hard drive or with the master file on the computer hard drive and a copy of the file/document (using the same file name) on a flash drive. In all cases it is important that the read only attribute (found in the file properties) on the main or original file is not ticked. If the attribute is ticked, deselect the tick, apply the change and click OK. To summarise. 1. The main or master copy on main computer can be edited and copied to flash drive. 2. I am able to save to it, bring the document back up, make changes and save again to the same file. This is the first time I have had the message that it is a read-only file.     3. One of the Stupid Microsoft Tricks is on me. I cannot get alphanumeric filenames to display in numerical order. For example, I keep some files and file folders on persons and families that have gedcom-type program numbers. So Families I have numbered similarly to F-1, F-2, etc. within surname group. This is fine for F-1 through F-99. But beginning with F-100, Windows displays F-100 through F-109 above F-10, F-110-F119 above F-11 . . . and so forth. This is driving me nuts. It gets purely nonsensensical with higher numbers. How can I get Windows to display these files or folders in actual alphanumeric order? I am running Win98ME with normal Windows Explorer.     3. I know can save to the thumb drive the same as any other drive. I don't know what you are calling a "flash drive".     2. Hi Janet I have not had any experience with flash drives, but I would have to say that anything you put on it is "read only". You have to copy it back to your hard drive to make changes (you may need to right click on the name of file [before opening it] and select properties and uncheck "read only" in the attributes box and click apply), then re-save it to the flash with a new name or add a number to the first one.     3. IPTC works mostly commonly with jpg's and tiff's. IPTC is information that stays with photos and is not going to disappear just because you burn them to a CD. There's 2 cases in which I've found it to disappear - one in allowing Windows to resize photos before emailing them. Windows (on XP for sure) doesn't know what IPTC is so it just kicks it out when resizing for email. The same can happen when making batch changes using FastStone, which again does not recognize IPTC so it throws it away. Otherwise it's pretty stable stuff used by professional photographs everywhere and slowly making its way into the lower worlds.     3. ACDSee Pro 2 Photo Manager. It has very detailed batch processing options that can definitely handle the renaming you're suggesting and do it very quickly. Re-attaching to Legacy, now that could be a challenge. As I've experienced it, the only way to preserve the links to Legacy is to do your renaming there and that would be a very tedious process indeed. I've done it manually just out of sheer determination to have it done, but it ain't fun.
