Thanks so much to all who responded to my query. Nivard, Sue and all - advice worked like a charm. Regards. Maureen in Sydney.
I have a new PC which seems to have a problem in OE on start-up. All seems OK until I go into OE for my emails when a message shows that OE did not close properly. The message is always on the last email showing This only happens after a complete close down of the PC, not if the computer 'goes to sleep' in the day. Can anybody tell me what is going on (in very simple terms please) and how to correct it. TIA Heather

Hi Maureen Like this you mean? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ the Testament of the Reverend John Gerard of So.Ronaldsay and Burray. He died on 2 October 1850, according to his Testament. As usual in many Testaments, a list of debts owed to the deceased at death is included in Rev.John Gerard's Testament.-- So, I thought I would extract, for you, some of those Orcadians (mainly! from the Reverend's Parish) that are included in this list in his Testament. I copy it, paste it into Notepad. Use EDIT Replace > I leave "Replace with" empty then I click Replace ALL I use this a lot for emails that have been forwarded many times too. The 1860 census is now interactive, for the first time anywhere. Footnote has just released the full 1860 census with the ability for you to add your comments and contact information on all of the entries. There is a full explanation of the whole process on the Upstate New York Genealogy Blog at: http://ny-genes.blogspot.com This is unique and should prove very interesting and helpful.

Hi Judy, I have a vague recollection of hearing about programs that allow you to bypass the windows directory system altogether, and give all sorts of other functions. Only problem is I can't remember what they are. A google search may well lead you to something that does what you want. Hi Judy, You have to put the leading zeros in, 001, 002, 003, 010, 011, 012 etc. This will look after up to 999 files. If you're going to have thousands, you have to put in extr zeros to cope. Unfortunately computers aren't smart enough to recognise what we can see and understand. Cheers, Robyn Judy wrote: > One of the Stupid Microsoft Tricks is on me. This is fine for F-1 through F-99. But beginning with F-100, Windows displays F-100 through F-109 above F-10, F-110-F119 above F-11 . . . and so forth. > > This is driving me nuts. First, let me offer belated thanks to Robyn for the place-holder suggestion. Thayne described the distinction in spreadsheet programs between numeric and text (ASCII) entries. This was indeed what I meant about the ease of getting spreadsheets to display such sequences as F-1...F-2002 in alphanumeric order -- by designating the series as text. Another way to look at my problem in WinExp is that it is essentially a table, with internal rules that I can apply in minor ways. I can change sort order by date and by type of file, but Microsoft does not give me the option to sort truly by filename where numerals are concerned. Perhaps this is because that would disrupt WinExp's ability to find filenames because WinExp is unable to "think" in text. Donna's comment >>It's called 'logic' thinking with PC's. Not 'rational' thinking.<< , differentiating logic from reasoning, is well taken. Turing et al. undertook the search for algorithms that would simulate our beliefs about human thought. Successor researchers continue to refine the constructs in certain ways, but since it all is still based on 010101010 states, the limitations remain. I still wish for an option to set the WinExp table display in a way that would sidestep the core program. Thank you all for the illuminations. Yep, so in the computer world, you need those zero's to line up the numbers. It falls in line with how numbers all line up on the right side of a paper when adding or subtracting. It's called 'logic' thinking with PC's. Not 'rational' thinking. -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Art Seddon Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2008 11:43 PM To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Getting filenames to displayinactualnumericorder - help please!
