By "OE" I assume you are actually referring to Internet Explorer - "IE"? Outlook Express is a program for handling your email messages. It is not a browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer. The speed of your viewing of pages usually depends on the service provided by your internet service provider. Or, it could be due to the sites you are visiting being very active, and consequently their servers are slowing the "traffic" down. Firefox is a more secure browser than IE. You can even make it far more secure by installing many of the add-ons available free from the Mozilla site https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Yes, you can have both browsers (or more, if you wish) installed on your computer without causing problems. You can uninstall Firefox but you can't remove Internet Explorer (it is part of the Windows OS). > -----Original Message----- > From: caribou@waitrose.com > Sent: Sat, 9 Aug 2008 11:31:59 +0100 > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Outlook Express+Firefox > > I run Windows XP, use an efficient anti virus programme and have a > firewalI. Thank you! I checked the properties, and "Do not send to recycle bin, it will be automatically deleted", which is fine. Thank you for this information! I also wondered where the Clip Board was, as I use Vista, on my laptop. I have a question also, Where is the trash basket? The Icon is on my Screen, but when I open it, there is nothing in it, even though I have deleted something. I know when I was using XP, all I had to do is open it, and there is what I deleted. What most likely has happened is that you (or another user) has turned on the option to "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin". That would account for it showing up "empty" when you click on it to open it. To remedy this, right-click the Recycle Bin icon, then select Properties. Check the options there and select the ones you want and deselect the ones you don't. For example, if you rarely empty the Recycle Bin because you want to avoid discarding files you might someday want to recover, you can increase the maximum storage size of the Recycle Bin. You can also turn off the delete confirmation dialog box that appears every time you send files to the Recycle Bin. And of course, the one you need to change, which is choose not to move files to the Recycle Bin and instead immediately remove them from your computer when you delete them (as is happening now). Hopefully it is simple as that for you :-). > -----Original Message----- > From: jjc@gvtc.com > Sent: Sat, 2 Aug 2008 16:33:27 -0500 > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Trash Basket > > Thank you for this information! Clipboard in Vista is "invisible", as this article explains: http://e-articles.info/e/a/title/How-to-use-the-clipboard-in-Vista/ > -----Original Message----- > From: jan@jb15339.force9.co.uk > Sent: Sat, 2 Aug 2008 00:08:17 +0100 > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] CLIPBOARD > > Hi all > > I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop and for the life of me I > cannot find clipboard. When my computer shut down on it's own I found out it was overheating because the fan had dust on it. Have it cleaned out regularly and you shouldn't have any more problems. Hi Judy; Another thing to consider was an experience I had. When I this trouble, mine was that I had too many peripherals connected to my computer and the power supply was overheating, causing the heat sensor to shut down the machine. Put in a new power supply and an additional fan and everything was fine. My suggestion, vacuum out the inside of the computer first (as Lisa suggested) and see if that helps. It's the most cost effective solution. -- Enjoy the Search! Thayne Lisa Davenport wrote: > When my computer shut down on it's own I found out it was overheating > because the fan had dust on it. Thanks for hanging-in Dennis. I'll give this a go when I get home, but that won't be until tomorrow night. It seems that putting a UK version of XP onto a computer made for the Australian market is the problem. The keys are in the Aussie locations, but XP thinks they represent different symbols. Robyn I believe that all previous operating systems have had a facility to change keyboard layouts to users' requirements. The difference in the case of XP is that there appears to be a different procedure to that described in Microsoft's help pages.((;-( RecumbentDennis in Chester UK BTW, I have only received one copy of your recent messages which I believe were to my personal address and not via the list address, though both addresses were in the recipients box. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robyn Waymouth" <waymouth@ihug.com.au> To: <gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com>; "'Dennis Turner'" <me@recumbentdennis.org.uk> Sent: Monday, July 28, 2008 3:14 AM Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] @ & ' Thanks for hanging-in Dennis. Apologies if you're getting essentially this reply twice, but my first attempt seems to have vanished into the ether. I recently took my new Asus Eee (mini laptop) from Australia to England. Over there a friend arranged to have the operating system changed from Linux to MS XP. From that point on my keys responded differently. It seems that in England, the @ is two keys to the right of L and " is upper case 2. The hatch key (upper case 3) comes out as a pound symbol - a bit redundant here is Oz. All the English computers I used had this setout. I was quite surprised, as I expected UK and Oz would be the same. We use UK spelling after all. I haven't worked out how to fix it yet, but I assume it's a software setting somewhere. I've sent a couple of posts recently as "Reply all", but I haven't received them. Just wondering if this goes through. Cheers, Robyn
