Could someone be so kind as to let me know if there is a list that is strictly for computer help? Thanks Shirley
Hi Mary Firstly if you value your screen keep the moggy away from it as claws will definitely not do it any good :-( (a ball of wools much more fun for a feline) Also try and keep the kids mits off the screen, they may just decide to try and draw on it or whatever which may ruin it There are commercial solutions out there but they are pricey (but so is a new laptop) personally I use a clean yellow duster to wipe the dust off gently now and then and periodically I use some cotton wool with distilled water (just damp not wet) and very gently wipe the screen over That has kept this five plus year old screen as good as I need it to be It is widely recommended NOT to use window cleaner and the like which may contain chemicals which might stain the screen Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > > Hi everyone, > a simple question..... how do you clean the LCD computer and Tv screens, > I > will not be able to see my genealogy files if I don't > attend to mine soon ! > I am not unduly grubby but have two sticky grandchildren and a cat who > keeps whamming the screen to catch the mouse cursor ! > > Mary

Here in the USA they sell spray bottles of eyeglass cleaner which contain mainly isopropyl alcohol with a little wetting agent or use isopropyl rubbing alcohol, about 76% Also find microfibre eyeglass cleaning cloths. bob gillis > > Mary ------- -------------------------------------- Having trouble > with your subscription? Are you using Windows, Linux, or a Mac, and what version? Ie, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000? You may need outside help to perform this if you are not accustomed to editing the Registry, but this should fix the problem for you: Go to Start>Run and type regedit in the box labelled Run. Then click on File>Export. This action will ask you to name the export file and save it in My Documents (name it with the date is an apt name). This is now a backup of your Registry in case anything goes wrong. Click on the plus (+) sign in front of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Scroll way down the list that shows until you find afolder named: Folder Again, click on the "+" sign to open that folder (named Folder) Click on the "+" sign in front of the folder named Shell Click on the "+" sign in front of the folder named Open Click on the folder named Command Over in the right hand panel you will now see (Default) Double click on (default) and delete the entry showing in "Value Data" (it will be highlighted in blue) Cut and paste the line below into the "Value Data" box %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /idlist,%I,%L Click Ok at the bottom of the screen and exit Regedit. Reboot your computer and your folders should now open whan clicked upon. > -----Original Message----- > From: greenways6@aol.com > Sent: Tue, 12 Aug 2008 06:08:22 EDT > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Opening Folders > > Thanks for the advice, Dora, but this does not cover what I want to put > right. Excellent list of tips here: http://www.cleanlcds.com/ And, one very important tip listed is: "Never spray any cleaning solutions directly onto the screen, spray it into the your cleaning cloth". That applies to CRT monitors as well as LCD screens. > -----Original Message----- > From: faraway@xtra.co.nz > Sent: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:52:04 +1200 (New Zealand Standard Time) > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Cleaning LCD screens > > > Hi everyone, > a simple question..... how do you clean the LCD computer and Tv > screens, I > will not be able to see my genealogy files if I don't > attend to mine soon ! > I am not unduly grubby but have two sticky grandchildren and a cat who > keeps whamming the screen to catch the mouse cursor ! > > Mary > ------- > -------------------------------------- > Having trouble with your subscription? What type of internet connection do you have? Is it dial up connection with a 56 bit modem, wired DSL or Cable connection? Since you are in Australia there may be a problem in that your ISP bigpond.com does not have enough bandwidth. Have you contacted bigpond Help? I do not think it has anything to do with your modem, if is is broadband. bob gillis
I wonder if anyone has had the same problem as me? Have been trying to view this webnar but keep getting the message "insufficient bandwidth" and I wonder if someone could enlighten me in rather simple terms please as I am in my senior years. I should add that I have followed all the suggestions on the website but to no avail. I use a Lenovo laptop with Windows Vista Business, 1G Ram, Nvidia 128 mb graphics, Windows Media Player, Norton Internet Security. Thanks in advance Valma
Thanks for the advice, Dora, but this does not cover what I want to put right. It is the folders I am having problems opening. If I right click on a folder and scroll down to 'Open' then I can access the files in that folder as normal. I should be able to click (or double click) on the folder to open it. Rita
Hi Jim & Val I to am a senior. I do get lost on my PC from time to time. Doing searches for terms has in every case resolved my problems. Take your problem. I found a number of sites where this problem has been addressed. Example in point. Keep in mind this is just one listeners opinion. If one takes the message at face value, what it is saying is that you have too many USB devices plugged into the PC for the modem to work. Have you? USB broadband modems are the spawn of the devil. Irrespective of the answer I'd suggest investing in a cheap modem/router instead if your PC has a network port. And even if it hasn't, I'd fit a PCI network card to get a port. Anything other than a USB modem............. John
Hi Dora, Sorry, don't understand. You will have to explain in simplistic terms for me to be able to answer you. <What operating system are you using? <Yours <Dora Smith
It seems that your problem may lie in what appears to be the confusion you have with just what is a folder and what is a file. Once you understand the basics of Windows Explorer you will find that using your computer becomes much easier. Rather than a long dissertation here, these sites will set you on the right path. First of all, some to help understand files and folders: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/filemgmt.mspx http://www.jegsworks.com/Lessons/win/filesandfolders/views-winxp.htm http://www.helpwithpcs.com/courses/windows-xp-tutorial-explorer.htm Now, on how to fix file association, that is, just which program you can set to open the files you want to view or use: http://video.about.com/windows/Windows-XP-File-Associations.htm http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859 http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips-eml.php/413 > -----Original Message----- > From: greenways6@aol.com > Sent: Sun, 10 Aug 2008 03:59:44 EDT > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Opening folders > > I have a problem opeing file folders. First, thank you to Dora Smith, Bob Gillis and N.East for their helpful comments. My only connection with the internet is broadband which obviously both IE and Firefox use. To explain I have an interest in art and frequently download sizeable files of copies of pictures, I noticed the time difference in Firefox but to confirm the difference before writing for your advice I first downloaded a given page for a picture via Firefox and then immediately afterwards did precisely the same via IE and the difference was significant, like minutes. I have repeated the check several times and have ensured that the settings for both IE and Firefox are the same. In particular reference to Dora's comments, I have IE version 7, and I believe that XP service pack 3 has done nothing but slow my machine down. I have concluded Firefox has some additional security which takes its time - if I could delete that I would be happier. I also believe that many of the software suppliers appear to imagine they "own" your computer and are very profligate with the space requirements they impose. I have a problem opeing file folders. When I click on a folder it asks me to choose the programme I want to open the file. If I right-click on the file folder the top of the list in bold says 'Print Directory Listing'. 'Open' is shown at fourth place in the list. How do I get the folders to open normally, please. Rita
I run Windows XP, use an efficient anti virus programme and have a firewalI. I use OE as my default browser and like most listers I get spam, reading advice here and in magazines I decided to give Firefox a trial. I downloaded Firefox but kept OE as my default and used Firefox occasionally. I understand that it is quite acceptable to have both programmes on the same computer but it soon became very obvious that downloading sites from Google took much longer through Firefox than through OE. Why is this? Caribou
I just tested it and it really does take a little longer for Firefox to open a page than IE 6. You might concievably have a very different experience with IE7, which is a resource hog among other things. (I'll switch to Firefox for my default browser before I ever install IE 7.) Neither took very long, however, atleast not with a simple page, and not all that long with MSNBC's home page. If Firefox has more security that may cause pages to take longer to download. I don't see any systematic or large difference in the amount of system resources they use. I dunno. It's a mystery. If you're computer is running slowly in general, you could need to clean your disk and defrag. You need several gigabytes of space free for Windows XP to run properly. Or you could have RAM issues. This year's antivirus software in most brands really hog system resources, typically using 60,000 to 100,000 megs of RAM,which overwhelms every computer I've been on that has 512 megs of RAM. I ordered more RAM cards for my machine and that solved the problem, except while in Second Life. I switched to BitDefender, which gets good reviews and is light on system resources, and that stopped. One other thing; my memory issues got much worse when I installed the XP Service Pack 3. It makes all kinds of things run on your machine that never ran before and they gobble memory. There could also be something about how your security settings are set up in one or both browsers.
