Yes, I can see what causes your problem, Charles, and it is what I mentioned in my first message. It is because your address at instow.net is a "spammer's delight"! Spammers quite often pick on an ISP address. Then they add common Christian names (or surnames) to that address. So in your case "charles" is exceptionally common so they know they have a high probability of instow.net having "charles", "charles1", "charles2" and so on. I am sure if you examined the headers of the spam you receive to that address, you will probably see in the "To:" or the "C.C:" a multitude of combinations using "charles". What I suggest you do is contact your ISP (instow.net) and see if you can change your address. If you can change it or can have two addresses with them, let all your friends and relatives know of your new address. Do not, however, use that new address on lists, groups, or web sites. Only use a Hotmail address for that purpose. Let your "charles" address run until you know you have contacted just about everyone using it (the good guys that is :-)). By doing that, and using Mailwasher PRO for all your accounts your spam will be reduced to a virtual trickle. And Mailwasher PRO will handle that very efficiently. I know this works because I went through a similar procedure earlier this year. Because I had "lance" or "lbates" in my address, I was inundated with spam messages. Where my spam level arriving at Mailwasher used to be 52% it is now around 7%, and most of those I don't see anyway as Mailwasher PRO deletes them straight away. Lance Too much spam? Hotmail in recent months have introduced excellent spam filtering and will direct spam to the JUNK E-MAIL folder. Are you by any chance downloading the JUNK E-MAIL folder into Outlook, as well as your Hotmail INBOX? The filtering system in Outlook is not 100% effective. You can, however, check all of your mail BEFORE downloading by using a program such as Mailwasher PRO: http://entier.ecosm.com/system/redir.php?ad=15&aid=2359 Mailwasher PRO will handle all of your mail accounts, allowing you to examine each message. You can accept, delete, bounce, or blacklist any message. You only download the messages you want. Another suggestion would be to change your Hotmail address, especially for lists, to one with a non-descript name (see mine). Spammers are very fond of creating addresses using common names, so it pays to have one that makes it a little difficult for them to detect. And, never, ever use your main ISP address on lists - always use a web account address (as you are doing). There is a little utility program called Hotmail Poppers which allows you to download only the INBOX from Hotmail. It is no longer free (now USD17.50) but well worth having. Hi everyone, there have been some answers about Legacy, which I find to be a very useful program for recording all of my family information, but nothing on TreeDraw. This can be used as a stand alone, making charts either from scratch or by importing a Gedcom file. The Legacy version means that you can work direct from your Legacy file, without going back to gedcom. I think that it is the best option I have found for charting, especially if your family tree has any extended families or other complex relationships, since at the heart of it is a simple graphics package. It is also good for being able to keep information together on the individual sheets of a large tree, if you can only print out on A4. It has some cunning features like an auto update and there is a free viewer available too. regards martin morley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Jones" <sajones@bigpond.net.au> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 14, 2004 5:25 AM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Legacy and charts Hi everyone! Ed, I couldn't find anything about a q_encult.exe but did find info on q_encult.dll. It is a Quicken file. Did you or do you have that program installed? If so, I would un-install it and re-install. If you recently removed the program, do a search for the file and delete it. It seems it's something that for one reason or another, wasn't removed when you uninstalled the program. Hello List, Can anyone out there advise how to stop my UFT Progamme 'playing up' intermittently. When trying to access it will sometimes blank the whole thing out and I have to turn off the computer on the switch Then it's back to scan disk etc to be up and running again. Other times it half does the job but stalls and I still do not have access. Scan disk again! The annoying thing is that it will also go through with no problem at all. I have thought of removing the programme and reinstalling but if anyone out there has a simpler remedy I would be grateful. I have used the programme for years and it has only started acting up recently. I am all backed up but not really comfortable playing around with settings etc. If you can help please keep it simple. Oh, nearly forgot, I run Win 98. Heather
I wish to thank everyone for helping me. Marie

Just a couple of points, Alfred: Roxio have a "fix" for the problem of Easy CD Creator 5 working with Windows XP. It can be found on: http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/ecdc_xpFAQecdcv5p.jhtml You can burn to a CD-R in more than one session. You just have to follow the instructions when the burn is complete in the Easy CD Creator menus that pop up. You are offered the alternative to write more to the CD-R at a later stage or close it with this session. I do this all the time (until the CD-R is full). The CD-R does not need to be formatted before-hand, regardless of whether it is a one-time burn or multiple sessions. Windows XP comes with its own CD burning program, which incidentally is a cut down version of Easy CD Creator (Bill must have faith in it to have chosen it :-)). Hope that clears up some of the "mystery". With this system, I can burn a CD (Easy CD Creator) in one session. OR, send my backups or files to the CD, much like I could to a Floppy disk. (Direct CD) -- With the Direct CD, I have to format the disks first, and they will not be readable by any other CD reader until I "Close them out". Once they are closed out, they are no longer writable. I also have a system on an HP notebook that will write directly to a CD if I format it first. If I burn without formatting, I have to burn everything I want on the disk in that one session, because one shot is all I get, unless I do the Direct Write format thing. There should be some kind of instructions with the CD writing software. This CD writing has not become standardized like hard and floppy drives, so the CD writing software instructions or help manual are important. The CDs do not have to be formatted for a regular, one time burn. They do have to be formatted, or prepared in some way if you want to write directly to them in successive sessions. Then these also have to be closed out before they are readable in another CD drive. Alfred --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Dear List, I have Create CD - Easy CD Creator -Adaptec It came with the Computer. The CD's I bought are TDK CD-R 80 I had no idea they were not Formatted. I tried to save things on to them from Outlook Express and kept getting a message saying I didn't own it and had to get permission to put the message etc on to it. A visitor I had here told me they are not the best ones to buy as they are not Formatted and showed me how to do it but I forgot as I didn't write it down. I have just done as Lance advised me to and (and it worked) so I have now put the things I wanted to save on to the disk. I appreciate your kind help thank you. Marie
Hello - hope you can guide me. It seems my online guestbook entries have disappeared. They were there a few days ago. I used "Guestbook Central" and WHAM...all my entries are totally gone. Any ideas on how I can retrieve it? Thanks. -Kathy
Dear Art, What I meant is I have Create CD. and the CD's I bought are CD-R.80 I did not know they were not formatted until someone who was visiting one day told me so. They tried to show me how to do it and I have forgotten. I will now try and do it. Marie
Jill, you may already have a spell-checker and not realise it :-). Do you have MS Word installed? If you do the spell checker is part of that. However, it may not be configured to enable you to use it in Outlook Express. These sites will give you the necessary steps (they apply to Win XP by the way): http://michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm, http://www.theeldergeek.com/oe_spellcheck.htm, or try this one: http://www.tech-pro.co.uk/howto_010.html (all are basically the same) And if that does not work for you, there is a free spell checker for OE available here: http://www.geocities.com/vampirefo/ This spell-checker will work with all Windows applications. Anything that supports the clipboard supports FreeSpell, and all it takes is a hotkey to invoke it. You may find this an option if all else fails: http://hcidesign.com/freespell/ Lance -----Original Message----- From: Boothey [mailto:Boothall@westnet.com.au] Sent: Friday, 18 June 2004 14:03 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] SPELL CHECKER Hi List. I hope someone can help get rid of an annoying error message that pops up every two minutes regardless of what's on the screen. It doesn't seem to do anything and goes away, for two minutes, when I click on "OK." Here it is: q_encult.exc - Application Error The instruction at "0x771215e0" referenced memory at "0x00fba258." The memory could not be "read." Click on OK to terminate the program. OK The computer is a HP Pentium 4 running at 1.7 GHz with 512 MB RAM. Thanks. Ed
You may have been sold an old cartridge. Take it out and shake it. If you can hear the ink sloshing around then you will have a new cartridge.
