Some webpage designers make their pages especially hard to read. One work-around is to highlight the page (ctrl+a). That makes what you're trying to read stand out. Might work in other situations. Connie
Hi Recently uninstalled a browser called Avant.................I tried this before and it uninstalled well, but would not let me click on URL's, I therefore restored my machine back...............Tried again as I still hate the Browser, and I have the same problem, It has done the same thing. How do I then, make my computer work by clicking on the URL instead of having to cut and paste. It also seems to have changed my icons at the bottom, if I click on one which directs me to a site, it now direct me to my printer, deleted the old icon and dragged another onto the tool bar................BUT still it is for the printer. Help someone............................ Thanks Jan
Margaret, What word possessor/text editor were you using? Did you save your work in progress? Did you close the file without saving? Were you trying to open a different file? Did you try to scroll down on the page that was viewed? Try to reboot and see if that helps? Did your power 'flicker'? Just some things I thought of that could cause data loss. I'm sure there are others. Art >Last night I transcribed a whole page of bio's I wanted to send to a >surname site. A little while ago, I went back to "draft" to proof it and >bingo....it was gone!! A little mistake!! You can ignore font styles. NOT change the font sizes. You need to make a style sheet to do that. Sorry if I mislead anyone!! For those who have low vision or have trouble seeing web page colors, there is an option that you can use to make all web pages look exactly the way you want them. Go to Tools> Internet Options> General> Accessibility. There you can turn off the colors. Change the font sizes, and ignore font sizes on the web page. If you know how, you can create a custom style sheet and have it load for all of your web browsing. Happy surfing! Art
Joan, What you describe seems to be an ISP problem. I would contact them and follow their advice. Also check the HP web site and make sure you have the latest driver for the modem. "Removing" the modem would be a last resort, if your ISP are unable to help. Seeing that your computer is new, there is a possibility that the modem could be faulty. But since it seems to be working some of the time, that would be your very last resort (to contact HP for technical support and a possible replacement). Judith, You should be fine. I've upgraded my CPU, Motherboard and RAM without any problems from Windows XP. The hardware changes that XP is concerned about are things like the sound card, modem, graphics card, etc. As for the hard drive, you shouldn't have any problems there either. After removing the Avant Browser, I no longer find my URL's work, I have to cut and paste, which almost always, does not work correctly.......................I wonder if there is a way, to get my URL's working via a click as before. Avant has also changed some of my icons, and I cannot access previous programs assigned to them. As anyone had the Trojan Keenval, which seems to have attached itself to my system............this is adware..................But despite AVG saying I need ro rerun it to get rid of the adware, it acutally does not clear it all. Marie, I can't help you with your technical problem but I do have a suggestion for writing to anyone who has vision problems. I know from experience that email written in color is VERY difficult to read. I was so thankful that a number of my friends, who know I was having difficulty, emailed me in large print and used the "bold" setting. Yellow, orange, light green and lavender are almost impossible and I simply deleted email that came in like that. Dear Listers We have a brand new HP computer running Windows XP with a dialup connection. We are having a lot of trouble getting and keeping a connection to the Internet. Often we have to dial twice to connect with the ISP. Then while surfing, we get a lot of " The page cannot be displayed." Some days it works just fine. Do you think it's the ISP? Do you think I should try "removing" the modem in the Device Manager? Joan
Hi Listers, I run Windows XP on a Pentuim 3 and am considering upgrading - CPU, Motherboard and memory. Do I need to buy a new Windows XP CD or will I be able to upgrade on my current one? I read somewhere that there are only so many changes that Windows XP will accept but cant recall the details. If I upgraded those 3 components now, and added a new hard drive a little later, will that still be accepted by XP? Regards JUDITH NEVILLE AUSTRALIA Researching........... These sites will give you the necessary steps (they apply to Win XP by the way): http://michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm, http://www.theeldergeek.com/oe_spellcheck.htm, or try this one: http://www.tech-pro.co.uk/howto_010.html (all are basically the same) And if that does not work for you, there is a free spell checker for OE available here: http://www.geocities.com/vampirefo/ This spell-checker will work with all Windows applications. Anything that supports the clipboard supports FreeSpell, and all it takes is a hotkey to invoke it. No, Jill, that's not the one, unfortunately. WordPad is the original word processor which has been in Accessories in all versions of Windows (along with the text editor, Notepad). MS WORD on the other hand comes either as part of the MS Office Suite (of programs), or is included in MS WORKS, another less costly suite of programs. These two sites will help you understand the difference: MS WORKS: http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/products/default.asp MS OFFICE: http://office.microsoft.com/home/default.aspx WORDPAD: http://cma.zdnet.com/book/ch15/ch15.htm#Heading6 Without MS Word, you will have to resort to using the free downloads. On the other hand, you may care to switch programs and use something like Pegasus Mail - a free program - and it has a spell checker! Find it at: http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_winpmail.htm Or even Eudora (free but with ad's): http://www.eudora.com/ Lance -----Original Message----- From: Boothey [mailto:Boothall@westnet.com.au] Sent: Sunday, 20 June 2004 20:10 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] SPELL CHECKER I have got word pad is that the one. Ok, Jill, now we know what track you are on (that always helps :-)). Regardless of your Windows version you do need to have a version of MS Word installed to access the Microsoft Spell Checker. You didn't mention if you have MS Word installed - do you? If you do have it, open MS Word and check to see if spell checker is enabled. The other thing to check is your computer's language setting. Make sure it is set to ENGLISH (AU). These sites may give you some technical help, if you are confident about editing the Registry and do have MS Word (both are Microsoft sites): http://tinyurl.com/evw4 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;224176 If you don't have MS Word (or MS Works even), you will have to use one of the free OE Spell checkers recommended. http://www.geocities.com/vampirefo/ http://hcidesign.com/freespell/ Lance -----Original Message----- From: Boothey [mailto:Boothall@westnet.com.au] Sent: Sunday, 20 June 2004 18:12 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] SPELL CHECKER Hi Lance, i have outlook express windows 98.
