    2. .EML files are not Powerpoint attachments. Powerpoint files end in .PPT What mail software are you using? 1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] - Reinstall Windows 98?
    2. pfitton
    3. Rose, Apparently some system files have become corrupted. Reinstall a fresh copy of W98 on top of the present system, this will leave all other files untouched. To do this you will need the W98 CD . Avoid reformatting the drive otherwise you will lose all the files on the drive. ALSO back up you Outlook Express before reinstalling. 3. I had this problem also and the ISP kept telling me it wasn't their problem or that the phone lines or the internet were "busy" or something was wrong with my modem or my understanding of the computer, which is admittedly limited. Finally I took the computer in a service facility to be checked out and no problem could be found, although I was told that some of the manufacturers are using a different type of modem than a few years ago which is not as efficient with dial up service. (This had not been mentioned when I "upgraded", of course, having done what seemed to be sufficient research.) Rather than purchase a separate "controller based modem," the technician said more likely the problem was with the "modem internet string" at the ISP. When I finally insisted that the ISP find the problem at their end, they did, but I got nothing for a year of inconvenience, aggravation, and condescension, and could not even get a return call until I wrote the president of the company, a local provider. Perhaps this will give you some things to check. I hope your experience is better. --Pam B,. > >Dear Listers > > We have a brand new HP computer running Windows XP with a dialup > > connection. 3. Janet, In order to save time, I would open the document in your MS application that you created it with. Save it as a RTF file. Open it in Word Perfect and then save it as a WP file. Changing a Word document (.doc extension) to Word Perfect would depend on the versions of BOTH programs. Both programs have changed their formatting over each version. If your Word Perfect is older than the Word program it may not be able to open it at all. Art At 04:53 PM 6/23/2004, you wrote: >I hope someone can help me. 3. Sue, There isn't any reason the an avi file will not play in Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. The age of the clip makes no difference as to why it will not play. Right click on the movie clip (in Explorer) and select "open with". Open the file with either Media Player or RealPlayer. The only reason that you would want to convert the avi to mpeg is if you were burning the file onto a CD to view in a DVD player. 3. If it were me, and the original PC is balking so much that I was getting a new one, I would remove the hard drive from the original PC and install it as a slave to the new one and copy any thing I wanted to the new, probably much larger, hard drive. Most new computers will recognize the added hard drive with no problem and it would be much faster than copying or cabling. Then after you clean up the old hard drive, you could re-format it and have that added storage. Adding a hard drive isn't a big job, if you don't want to do it, ask some computer repair place what they would charge to do it. Her son spent four hours checking her computer, and found that somehow her security had been switched off. After he had put this right she was able to send mail again. You never know, Regards, Terry

    2. Good Morning, My question is about how to transfer data from one PC to another. My computer is in sad shape, can only boot up in Safe Mode. It has windows 98. I've heard that you can get a cable which will allow transfer of data from one to another. I will need to buy a new computer in the next couple of days, more than likely it will have Windows XP. How does this data transfer work? I'd really like to be able to transfer all my Genealogy data as well as scanned photos and my e-mails. If something needs to be installed on the "old" pc to enable this I'm probably in trouble. It is not recognizing either of the CD drives. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 3. Dear List, My Computer seems to have a mind of it's own. This morning I have tried to send emails and I can't change the size of the font or send a message to a friend in Colour (his eyesight is not good). A tick keeps appearing near the Encript ( I keep deleting it and it reappears). I have not changed anything myself. It just happened of it's own accord. No one else uses the Computer. Marie
