    1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] IncrediMail - how to remove and what it is
    2. Lance
    3. Jill, if you had installed it in a normal Windows fashion, it would show in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. As it doesn't, it should have an "uninstall" icon in the program folder so use that. Then you can safely DELETE the remaining folders/files that were from Incredimail. You can also do a FIND for IncrediMail and delete the files that appear. You should then follow the instructions in this Microsoft article which will help with the registry entries which will appear in the registry: OLEXP: "Cannot Find Incredimail.exe" Error Message When You Open Attachment After Removing Incredimail: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q297069 For those who have not heard of Incredimail, it is a mail program which allows you to create messages with a number of fancy options (using HTML). However, Incredimail is a form of spyware and they even state that in their USER AGREEMENT. Most people NEVER read the "fine print" in those statements and just click "I Agree" (Incredimail rely on this failing of users). Here is the agreement: [QUOTE] GENERAL USAGE PATTERNS IncrediMail may gather information related generally to Users' use of the Software, Service, and Site including without limitation: The number of Messages that a User sends; The number of Messages that are read; What elements of the Service are most often used; User log-in dates and time; and Message size data. This information, which will only be collected and maintained in aggregate, anonymous form, will be used to, among other things: Provide IncrediMail with a better understanding of how Users use the Service and the various features thereof; Help IncrediMail to create and provide new services and offerings to Users; and Conduct and publish aggregate, anonymous, market research results. COMPUTER SETTINGS IncrediMail may collect settings, technical and other information from Users' computers, such as a computer's operating system, IncrediMail and browser versions used, connectivity, various communication parameters and other information related to the operation and interaction of the Software, subject to the provisions herein. This information will neither contain nor be linked to any personally identifiable information. CONSENT TO PROCESSING Users, including without limitation, Users in the European Union, fully understand and unambiguously consent to the collection and processing of their personally identifiable and non-personally identifiable information, in the United States." [END QUOTE] By all means, if you are happy to have them using all of your information, use the product. If you don't like having your activities monitored by a third party - DON'T! The other point with Incredimail is that messages are created in HTML. This is one way of having nice colourful messages, full of active icons - all very nice. HTML is one vehicle viruses use for transmitting themselves. HTML increases the size of a simple message to a very large size. For people who have limited downloads this an unwarranted burden to receive, especially if it is a message which could have been sent in plain text, without the embellishments of Incredimail. The best rule is always use PLAIN TEXT. It causes no problems for anyone and is the required medium on the majority of lists and groups. 3. Marie, would you like to try this? I suspect you are un-ticking in the Tools area when you have a new message open. There is another Tools place. Open Outlook Express. Now, BEFORE you open a new message, go to TOOLS [up the top of the screen, between View and Message. When you have clicked on that TOOLS then click on OPTIONS. Then click on the SECURITY tab. Look down the box and there is a place which says: "Encrypt contents and attachments for all outgoing messages" If there is a tick in that box, just remove it, click on Apply then OK. 3. Hi Jill, I'm not so good at any of this unless you have Windows XP. If you have Windows XP; bring up the Start menu, hover over All Programs until the list of programs appears, go to Accessories and hover again until another menu appears, then choose System Tools. Hover again until yet another menu appears and choose or click on System Restore. System Restore will show an option 'Restore to an earlier date'. Choose that option and click next at the bottom of the page. Then follow the prompts to choose a date earlier than the date that you installed Incredimail. If you don't have Win XP, someone else will need to help you. Why don't you like Incredimail? I don't know anything about it at all. What is it? 3. Hi Hope someone can help me with this one...I have been doing some genealogical research in France and have acquired a number of CDs with marriages, births, deaths, etc. These are scanned copies of actual documents. The CDs come from various areas and each series of CD comes with its own viewer and setup files. In my previous installation of Windows 98 SE I was able to set the Regional Settings such that I was able to work with these CDs. Since reformatting my hard disk and reinstalling Windows 98SE I have not been able to use my French CDs. I have reset the Regional Settings to French (Canadian) (just as before) but my CDs won't work. I suspect that some intrinsic part is not making French the default language. When I go to Microsoft.com, for instance, my previous installation was detected by Microsoft and I would get the French screen. Not so this time which is why I suspect that the changes aren't happening as they should. The one other change that has happened to my system is the installation of Flash because of the cable setup (I was previously on a dialup modem). Could this be the culprit? Thanks Lucy

    1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] URL's and Avant browser
    2. Lance
    3. Hi Jan! Because of the mess the Trojan made of your IE settings, the file association for URL's has been broken or is missing. This site has two methods of fixing that particular problem: http://www.psknet.com/support/FAQ/oeurlnoclick.htm As for your Desktop icons, again the association has been broken. What you will need to do with each of those is right click, and edit the PROPERTIES so that the path is changed back to the original application for each one. Alternatively, you could delete all the shortcuts which are incorrect and recreate them again from the original application. One lesson to be learned I guess, from this exercise with Avant is for all readers of this list to be wary of installing applications which want to work with your major applications. Always check with Google to see if any such program has had negative reports. If it has, think twice about installing it, no matter how glowing some reports may be. 3. .Hi Joe In my experience, you have to import the .dbx folders into Outlook Express on the new drive -- open Outlook Express, go to File, then Ìmport from then you will be given the option of importing messages or addressbook. I'm assuming you know the location of the .dbx folders in order to import them. Good luck! 3. Regarding .EML files see under Unable to Open .eml File Attachments in Outlook Express Keywords: .eml, email file, attachments, outlook express, error, unable to open, problems ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- When you attempt to open an .eml attachment in Outlook Express, either the file may not open or you may receive an error message that states that there is no program associated with this file type. To resolve this behavior, either run the Msimn executable file with the /reg option to force Outlook Express to re-register its file types, or re-register the .eml file type in My Computer. To run the Msimn executable file with the /reg option: Quit Outlook Express. Click Start , and then click Run. In the Open box, type msimn /reg, and then click OK. To re-register the .eml file type in My Computer: On the desktop, double-click My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. Click the File Types tab. Under Registered file types, click EML Outlook Express Mail Message , and then click Advanced. Click Open, and then click Edit. Type the following single line in the Application used to perform action box: C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1 Click OK , click OK again, and then click Close. ----- Original Message ----- From: <kquinn@cam.org> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 25, 2004 2:39 AM Subject: Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] eml attachments and powerpoint > .EML files are not Powerpoint attachments.
