I know there is some place on my computer where I can tell it not to have some programs running in the background on startup. But, I have not been able to find it. I am running Windows XP and have just loaded my Corel WordPerfect programs but don't want them running in the background. Can someone Please tell me how to find this tool so I can turn them off. Hi everyone, I would be interested in any thoughts / advice about this : I am increasingly swamped by spam which I filter out fairly successfully using 'message rules' in OE. I suspect that much of this arises from the fact that my email address has been published on various web-sites, including my own. I believe that it is possible to hide email addresses from those who harvest them from web-sites using a Java script. If anyone knows how this is done and whether or not it is successful, I would be pleased to hear from them. Many thanks, David
I'm not Lance, but here are my 2 cents. The latest security flaw in Internet Explorer can be temporarily fixed by turning off Active X scripting. This has been recommended time and time again. If your Active X controls are turned off and your virus software is up to date, you will not have a problem. The new Service Pack (due shortly) is in it's final stages of testing. It has been a release candidate for awhile. Microsoft says that if you are running the RC2, this is not a problem. If you've followed this list for awhile, you would see quite a few problems that have been created by people installing alternate browsers and then later trying to remove them. I use IE as my default browser but also have an alternative one installed (Opera). Reason: There are some (actually, quite a few) that look better in Opera. Also, since my Active X controls are disabled in IE, if the pages uses extensive Java scripting, it will not load. I then note the address and go back and load it into Opera (if I really want to see the page). Hope this is of some help? Art >Lance, this is from CNET Download: What are your thoughts on this? Hi Janet! All the different versions can be confusing. As one other writer pointed out MS Word is not part of any Windows operating system. Word is either part of the MS Office Suite of programs, included with MS Works or a stand alone program. The MS Works version is usually a version behind the current version. You may have originally got your version of Word as part of the computer manufacturer's setup CD which would have also included the Windows program. They sometimes bundle programs together like that. The version history went from Word 97, to Word 2000 (no 98). Then it moved to Word XP (or 2002) and now the latest is Word 2003. For the average user there is little to be gained from moving to a new version. If you do a lot of intensive production of brochures, illustrated newsletters, write books, etc., then a move to a new version would be of some advantage. There are a number of ways to acquire a newer version. MS Works is probably the cheaper option, though it would not be the latest version. Besides Microsoft Works (spreadsheet), you get Microsoft Word, Microsoft Money Standard, Encarta standard, and more. Task Launcher brings all six products into an easy-to-use interface. It has 500 pre-designed templates for personal, household, school, and community related tasks. With Works Suite you can qualify for discounted upgrade pricing for Microsoft Office 2003. The price of Works with all those is cheaper than buying MS Word as a single program (figure that one out :-)!). That's how I initially acquired MS Word some years ago. You can purchase MS Works Suite 2004 for USD79.99 (Amazon.com). The next option is one that is becoming the more widely accepted way of purchasing the MS Office 2003 Suite. And that is to buy the version known as the "Student and Teacher Edition". This version is "supposedly" for students and/or teachers only as the name suggests. However, it is widely retailed now to anybody - all you have to do is ask. With this edition you get Microsoft Office Word 2003, Excel 2003, Outlook 2003, and PowerPoint 2003. You can install this on up to three of your home PCs. It is a silly situation really, as this edition is retailed for around US129.99 (at Amazon.com) while the NORMAL edition is around USD400 (which includes Access and Publisher also). Then of course you can purchase MS Word 2002 as a single program for USD42.75 (at Amazon.com). Depending on your needs of course, but I would suggest that the Student Teacher version would be the best value. You get the advantage of MS Excel as a spreadsheet program, but you also get the best e-mail and personal information manager program available - Outlook 2003. It alone is worth USD 89.99! You may find prices cheaper (than those I have shown) available from local stores. Even e-Bay is a good option for excellent value. We have bought some very expensive programs through e-Bay and all have been excellent and new. Hope this helps. Lance, this is from CNET Download: What are your thoughts on this? Janet July 2, 2004 A recently discovered security flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer has prompted experts to recommend using alternative browsers until the flaw can be remedied. Thankfully, Download.com's top five alternative browsers are more than happy to take you surfing in the interim. Word is not a part of windows. It is a separate program, included with Microsoft Office and with the better, or is it just the later, versions of Microsoft Works. I didn't know there was a Word 98, I had Windows 97 in Microsoft Office on a computer I purchased in 1994 or so, I know it came with Windows 3.11 and I upgraded to Windows 95. I liked Word 97 just fine, I now have Word 2000 on another computer running Windows 98, It seems to be OK too, but they both have WAY more features than I ever use. Most of the newer economy computers come with Microsoft Works or Corel Office or something rather than Microsoft Office, I have not had the opportunity to use Works. I haven't seen Word by itself, but I did see MS Works on the shelf at Wal-Mart the other day, one cheep version with a word processor, and another version for something in the $95 range which did include MS Word. I do not know which is the current version. But, if you have 97 and are not doing really heavy word processing, you won't gain much, in my opinion. I just remembered that some of the newer Word documents cannot be opened with Word 97 though. --- If there is a 98, it is still obsolete. --- These are just my opinions. Can anyone tell me the differences between Word 97 and Word 98? Would it be worth it to me to purchase Word 98? I had Windows XP put on last summer and was surprised that I did not get an upgraded Word! Or is that not unusual? Janet in Baton Rouge, LA a
Thanks for the great suggestions on having our family cookbook printed. I visited our local copy company and they did not mention having me do it on 8.5 X 11 paper and then allowing them to do their "magic". I appreciate your hints! Janet
I'd agree 100% with Ken on this. You can get the printing done at almost any of the big office supply chains or printing shops. It's not a big deal for them and they usually can do it within 24 hours or so. The other advantage is you can use your original photos as masters if you lightly stick them to a page. With the modern photocopiers you can have them shrunk down to any size and have them printed in full colour or black and white. Plus the shops can do custom binding as well and make your book look like it came from major printing house. Our you can just have it look like a ordinary handout pamphlet if that's all you need. Just make your 8 1/2 x 11 pages look the best you can and they will do the rest. I'd also suggest numbering each page either on the front or lightly on the back so that they don't get mixed up when they are printed and bound. I'm also sure they would prefer that you print only on one side of the original pages that way the ink will not show through on the other side when they are photocopied. If you really want to go cheap you can set your word processor program to "Landscape Mode" and print your pages in "double columns" then just make quick trip to the "do it yourself" photocopier. Nelson
Janet, What I do when I want to print such a booklet is I print the document out on 8.5 x 11 as a regular document and then I bring it to the copy place and they do their magic. What I do is I organize the big document to look like the small document would look. I don't think I am expressing myself properly but, trust me, it's a very easy process. Hi Jill! No worries! As you did not use ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS it was probably installed in the default folder - C:\Program Files\Incredimail. That would be the logical place to start looking. Most programs, when you go to install them, usually accept that you want to install them in the default Windows folder (C:\Program Files), and unless you change it during the setup procedure, that is where they end up. When you install any new program, always close down all running programs. You can do this using Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DELETE), or you can use a simple utility called End It All which I think you will find is still free from the link on this site: http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall.htm When everything is closed down, then you use ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS to install the program. This is a normal Windows install. It is essential to shut everything down when installing new programs. This is because Windows shares files among programs, particularly files ending with the extension ".DLL" (Dynamic Link Libraries). If you install a program with other programs running, one or more of the files required by the new program may already be in use by another program on your computer. The end result may be a later conflict when attempting to run the new program and you will wonder what has happened. By using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, the new program will be listed in there if you ever need to change it or remove it from your computer. To use FIND to track down the remnants of Incredimail, just type "incredimail" in the box (without the quotes). End It All, by the way, is a great program to run BEFORE you run DEFRAG on your computer, too.
