I use Mozilla, and I really like it. I have had no trouble with viruses, and I find it works much faster that IE and OE. The only trouble I have ever encountered is that once in a while a web site won't open with Mozilla. In those cases I use IE for that instance only. Mary
Hi Janet! Yes, it can be tricky to locate some of those start-up programs. The easiest way in XP or 98 is to use MSCONFIG. Click START|RUN and in the command box type MSCONFIG. This opens Msconfig at the GENERAL tab. Click the LAUNCH SYSTEM RESTORE button (in XP) or CREATE BACKUP button (in 98) to back up your current settings. Click the STARTUP tab. Scroll through the items configured to start automatically, unchecking those that you no longer wish to have started when Windows loads. Click OK to close Msconfig. Click YES when prompted to reboot your PC. View the system tray to check your work. The unticked items should no longer be showing. These are some other ways to end them. You can right click START and select OPEN from the context menu. In the window which opens you should see a folder called PROGRAMS. Open that folder. In there you will see one labelled START-UP. Open that folder. You may see the programs in there you wish to stop opening at start-up. Just right click and select DELETE (these are only shortcuts not the program). Not all of the programs show in here for some reason. The next option is to start in turn, each of the programs you want to cease running at start-up. Look in its OPTIONS. You should see something like "Start <program name> at Windows Start-up". Remove the selection from that option. There are a number of programs available which allow you to manage your start-up programs. I use one called Reg Cleaner which has as one of its options a start-up manager. Reg Cleaner is still free from this site (only): http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm The main reason I use Reg Cleaner regularly is that it is a quick way to check to see if anything (unwanted!) has been added to my Registry without my knowledge of it happening. It is a neat utility to have on hand. Startup Control Panel is also a nifty control panel applet that allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple to use, is very small, and won't burden your system. Startup Control Panel is compatible with Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP. And it's free: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml Hope this all helps. David, you need to filter your mail BEFORE you download it. Once you have it in OE for your "message rules" to work on, you have done what the spammers wanted to know. You have confirmed your address as legitimate. You will find quite a number of links to the topic of hiding your e-mail address on this site: http://spam.abuse.net/userhelp/#hide One of the better preventive measures with addresses is not to use a name in the address. Spammers not only harvest addresses, they are also very creative in building addresses from names. Therefore you can confuse them somewhat by using a "nonsense" address - one that literally means nothing. A good program to use to filter your mail is Mailwasher PRO. There is a free version available, but it will only handle one account. The PRO version handles as many as you wish. You can even use it to filter downloads of Hotmail or Yahoo Mail if you have those accounts. Holley, one of the reasons alternative browsers aren't subjected to the security attacks Internet Explorer suffers is that hackers realise that the majority of users have Internet Explorer. More importantly, they know ALL users of Windows XP HAVE to have IE installed. So, if you were a hacker would you waste time composing security attacks for browsers that aren't widely installed? It is only a matter of time, though, when they decide it may be "fun" to do just that, especially as more users switch browsers. No matter which browser you choose to use, just make sure ALL your security measures are up to date and installed. Things like anti-virus programs, firewall, Adaware, SpyBot, Pest Patrol are a must for any computer connected to the Internet. Make sure security updates from Microsoft are installed as soon as they are released. Scan any new downloads or attachments for viruses BEFORE opening or installing. Use a good anti-spam program that lets you examine for spam and unwanted attachments in your mail BEFORE you download it. All of those measures will help, regardless of which browser you choose to use. As a matter of interest, I use IE 95% of the time and I do have Mozilla as an alternative. Lance Too much spam? Marie, this will depend on a number of factors. The first consideration is the quality of the image you were sent. You can test this by opening it in your photo editing program to see if the text is clear and readable. If it is not increase the magnification to something like 200%. Can you read the text clearly then? If you can it should be possible to print it in readable format. Next, look at the image to see if there are "superfluous" areas surrounding the text. That is, is there a lot of "extra" space surrounding the text that does not need to be included - you just want the text. If there is, use the "crop" tool in your photo editor to remove as much of this space as possible. Then using "SAVE AS" (most important!!) save this cropped image. If you just choose SAVE it will mean your original image will be altered and you won't be able to return to it. Now choose FILE|PRINT PREVIEW in your photo editor and see what the new image looks like. If it is still not to your liking go to FILE|PRINT| and select settings that allow the image to occupy the WHOLE PAGE. You will find that option on the Setup page (depending on your program). This will "blow up" the image so that when you print it you will get a page full, rather than have the image just showing as a small photo on a large page. As I said depending on the quality of the original, you may have to do a bit of "playing around" with the image to get it "readable". The actual print quality need not be spot-on, just good enough to read the text so you can extract what you need. Has anyone tried SPAMCOP ? Does it work ? Anthony
Hi Janet -- It sounds like you have things installed on your startup menu that need to be removed to another folder. How to check this is to left click on the Start button, then click on Programs, then click on Startup and you should see a listing of what is in there. You can then drag them out of Startup and place them in another folder. If they are in the registry to run automatically, then that procedure won't work. But, hopefully, they aren't. Hope this is helpful. Threre are several methods for obscuring ones address in a website. The thing that is interesting is that the procedures usually work. There was a study made recently that indicated all the various methods pretty much worked. The various procedures are in the archives under encoding or something like that I suppose. Or look in Google. I am having memory problems. My machine only has 128 MB, and when I am on line and want to copy and paste something, lot of times I can not get my Word to open, because I am out of memory. This machine can handle 512 MB, so I have purchased two new 256 MB modules. I only have 2 slots , so I will have to remove the 128 MB module that is in the machine. Can this cause a problem? My last machine had 4 slots, so when I upgraded the memory in it, I just added two new equal modules, leaving the old one in place.
All of a sudden, when I shut down my computer or try to reboot, an "ending program" box comes up saying ending program Type32.exe. Then it says its not responding and won't shut down. I did a search for Type32.exe and it seems to be my keyboard. Why would this happen out of the blue? Kerryn
