    1. soc.genealogy list and Gen-Brit lsit?
    2. v777r
    3. Has anyone ever used the Gen-Brit list? I subscribed and was told it was "gatewayed" to the soc-genealogy list. I understand some kind of mutual sharing of messages but not how it works. I get two types of messages from the Gen-Brit list which is the only one I am subscribed to here. Some are mailing list messages (GenBrit?) and some are newsgroup messages(soc.genealogy?) My problem is that my emails to GenBrit take ages to appear (compared to rootsweb) and then I see answers before I see the questions. Maybe I'm nit-picking here but its very irritating, trying to follow a discussion! Is this something to do with my recent entry into the world of Hotmail? Vee in UK

    3. Yes the several dots that appear are the same on all computers as standard. what is happening is that the Pc is not remembering your password, so when you do type it in all is ok, you need to check the box in the connect box that says always remember my password on this computer and it will do just that. 1. Backing Up Eudora Files
    2. Patricia J Weisshaus
    3. Dear Friends, I've already lost all of my genealogy files in Eudora when I switched from 3.0 to 6.0. Unfortunately, I did not get them in the same directory and they weren't backed up because I don't know how to do it. Rather than losing them again, could someone explain in simple language how to do back them up? Thanks, Pat

    3. I have had the same issue on my computer, operating on Windows 2000. My computer tech son says that it's fine, just hit connect because the system is "hiding" your password in there. 3. Thank you, Sandy. Someone finally came up with the simple way to do this! I had done it once before - wrote down the instructions - and had failed to write what it was for, so naturally when I went looking for them I couldn't find them. Thank you, again. Hi Janet- Go to Start > Run > type in 'msconfig' > and click on the Startup tab. Sandy

    1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] How can I make the text larger?
    2. David Creelman
    3. If you have an image editor, Photoshop, or any of the many others, find the Image Size dialogue. I'll give some instructions for Photoshop, but others should work similarly. With the resample box and constrain proportion boxes checked(so the picture keeps the ratio of height to width and the resolution will remain fixed) increase the size 10%. By increasing the size in 10% increments you degrade the image the least as you increase size. This is a great trick for the tough job of enlarging a picture file. That said, only increase the size enough to print effectively- the quality will decrease quickly as you enlarge. If this is a jpg file, make a copy first. Every save of a jpg will degrade the image a tiny bit, but every copy of the original will be perfect. I have tried the 10% method(which I got from a good Photoshop book, name forgotten) on high quality images with great success. If you try it on a jpg saved at low quality, the results may be spotty. You have to have some pixels to work with. 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Hiding email address on web sites
    2. UK Surnames
    3. I run a successful surnames exchange website which manages to hide all email addresses of contributors using an SQL Database to store the information and php to manage the database queries. Persons wishing to contact one of the contributors fill in an on screen form - which is then sent to the contributor who then makes the decision whether or not to continue the contact and give their email address to the enquirer. This does require some knowledge of programming and database management - but if you have a basic graft of simple programming it is not difficult to learn - more importantly it requires the use of web-space and a web server which runs some form of SQL and php (or other database management programming language such as asp or miva. I am very proud of the ability of my site to hold 6000+ email addresses securely and despite attempts to farm addresses from it - none have been successful. On another issue is email addresses getting onto web servers by accident - IMO Rootsweb are guilty of this - rootsweb archives strip email addresses from message headers, however they do not strip email addresses written into the message itself - this includes the from address in replies such as this one - you will notice that I have removed the from address from the original message section to safeguard that from appearing in the archives where it can easily be farmed. If anyone wants advise on writing a site using the technology in this email, or hosting such a site I will be happy to help etc but please request off list Malcolm Hills http://www.county-surnames.co.uk/index.php http://www.monumental-inscriptions.co.uk/index.php > -----Original Message----- > From: D&M_Goodwin > Sent: 05 July 2004 08:21 > To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Hiding email address on web sites > > > Hi everyone, > > I would be interested in any thoughts / advice about this : > > I am increasingly swamped by spam which I filter out fairly successfully > using 'message rules' in OE. 3. Robin, you can find the solution on this Microsoft site. It involves a bit of Registry editing so make sure you back-up FIRST! http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q228502 If you are not comfortable with editing the Registry, you may be able to eliminate it by click START|RUN and typing MSCONFIG in the "Run" box and clicking OK. On the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY window that opens, click the START-UP tab. Look for an entry for Explorer and untick it and click OK. If you don't find an entry for Explorer there, you will have to edit the Registry (as above). Lance Too much spam? Let Mailwasher check your mail first. 3. One other thing you might try is to play with the brightness/darkness and the contrast adjustments. To do this, just open the photo in your photoshop program, do a save as (I agree with the other e-mail, this is a very important step), then experiment. If you've saved a copy, you've nothing to lose. But the bottom line is, if the photo is of poor quality to start with, and if the writing was just hard to read on the stone when the photo was taken, and if the original photo isn't available, there's not a lot you can do about the quality of the photo. If the photo was taken from a film print, you might ask the person to rescan it at a higher dpi - the downside is that it makes the photo a larger file, takes longer to scan and to send (when I send a set of shots in to a newspaper I freelance for, I figure at least a half hour for four to six photos to all go through my dial-up connection). The upside is a high-quality photograph. hope you get it solved!!! 1. RE: Scanner fb310 cant install in Windows XP
    2. Nancy Masterson
    3. Joe, Does your scanner use a USB connection to your PC? If so, buy a hub (ask clerk at Best Buy or any computer store). They are relatively inexpensive (less than $60.) I know this sounds crazy, but it worked for me. I had a similar problem with my HP scanner and printer when I went to Windows XP. You connect the hub to your PC using a USB port. Depending on which hub you buy (I have 4 USB ports on mine), you can install your scanner, printer or anything that you are having trouble with. Then your scanner is plugged into one of the USB ports on the hub. It works. There is a technical explanation for this and it involves the assignment of IRQs (interrupt request lines) with Windows XP. The automatic assignment that the operating system does, simply doesn't work. Somehow the hub circumvents this. Crazy, but try it and let us know if it worked. Marie, this will depend on a number of factors. The first consideration is the quality of the image you were sent. You can test this by opening it in your photo editing program to see if the text is clear and readable. If it is not increase the magnification to something like 200%. Can you read the text clearly then? If you can it should be possible to print it in readable format. Next, look at the image to see if there are "superfluous" areas surrounding the text. That is, is there a lot of "extra" space surrounding the text that does not need to be included - you just want the text. If there is, use the "crop" tool in your photo editor to remove as much of this space as possible. Then using "SAVE AS" (most important!!) save this cropped image. If you just choose SAVE it will mean your original image will be altered and you won't be able to return to it. Now choose FILE|PRINT PREVIEW in your photo editor and see what the new image looks like. If it is still not to your liking go to FILE|PRINT| and select settings that allow the image to occupy the WHOLE PAGE. You will find that option on the Setup page (depending on your program). This will "blow up" the image so that when you print it you will get a page full, rather than have the image just showing as a small photo on a large page. As I said depending on the quality of the original, you may have to do a bit of "playing around" with the image to get it "readable". The actual print quality need not be spot-on, just good enough to read the text so you can extract what you need.
