I have looked for System File Checker in XP pro and not found it. Where should I look for it. Thanks Peggy Run System File Checker and replace the system files that have been overwritten.
I got an optical cordless mouse today because my "mouse arm" was having some big time problems... I am finding it is not as sensitive as my track ball but was wondering if there is anything special I need to know about using an optical and/or a wireless mouse....? Joe, Back when XP first was released, several hardware manufactures were slow in putting out drivers for older equipment. The solution at that time was to use the drivers for 2000. Some hardware was completely 'abandoned' at this point. It seems as if your scanner was one of the latter. According to your letter a driver IS available for 2000. I would try that and it should work. I, myself, have a two pieces of older hardware that run just fine with the 2000 drivers. Good luck, Art >Hello kind helpers, >I have just recently upgraded to Windows XP and find that I cannot install >my old faithful Canon fb310 scanner. >I wrote to Canon who say that they do not recognize this scanner (it >carries the Canon name and logo) and to contact the local source of supply >which I did only to be advised that they have no recommendation for its >installation even though it (fb310) is recognized for other operating >systems ie W95 W98 NT and 2000. >Any thoughts?
Jean, First step> GET RID of Spyware Nuker! This program only adds more ad tracking stuff to your system. Not to mention the fact that it overwrites Windows system files with it's own versions! Second step> Run System File Checker and replace the system files that have been overwritten. Third step> Update your anti-virus program and definitions. Run a complete scan of your computer. If you need help with any of these, please let us know. Good luck! Bob, What you should be using for your desired results is a database program. You could Import your Excel table into that and set up the queries any way you wanted. If you don't have Access, there are some free ones available. One is from IBM called DB2 (you have to register with IBM to download it). The other is Open Office Suite which contains a XML based database. Both are very good. If you don't like either of these options, do a Google search and look for others. The other option would be to use something like Clooz. Art At 02:41 PM 7/17/2004, you wrote: >I have made a transcription of the 1790 Census for a town in Excel >2000. Bob, Right click in My Documents on an open space. You will see 'Arrange Icons By'. You'll be able to sort them in several different ways from there. I have gotten a couple of the optical mice, I find that they are much more sensitive than the old dirty trackball. But, you have to use them on a non-reflective surface, at least not shiny. and with enough character the mouse can see a difference as it moves. I wear blue jeans and find it works real well on my leg, that way I don't have to raise my arm WAY up on the desktop. My desk chair arm gets in the way a bit, but it does relieve the wrist strain. On the desk I have a red file folder which works well, except when I get near the edge and the mouse has to raise up over the clip area. I can think of no reason to ever go back to a ball mouse. NOW, I just noticed that you said cordless. I couldn't use one of those, there has to be a clear line of sight between the reciever and the mouse and my desk is way too cluttered for that. <};-) Alfred Eller RootsMagic-Users-Admin@RootsWeb.com ======================== ============== ----- Original Message ----- From: "McKnight Meadows/Road's End Ranch" <mmrer@earthlink.net> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 17, 2004 1:59 PM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Mouses ;-) > I got an optical cordless mouse today because my "mouse arm" was having some > big time problems... > > I am finding it is not as sensitive as my track ball but was wondering if > there is anything special I need to know about using an optical and/or a > wireless mouse....? >
To adjust the speed of your mouse pointer Open Mouse in Control Panel. On the Pointer Options tab, under Motion, drag the slider. To adjust the double-click speed for your mouse Open Mouse in Control Panel. On the Buttons tab, under Double-click speed, drag the slider. Note: To test the speed, double-click the image in the test area. Hi all, could someone give me some advice please about the results of a page that my son looked at on the Internet? The page he looked at has put it's own dialler on the computer in the DialUp Networking folder and every few minutes this dialler cuts us off and immediately dials up to the web site that it's connected with. I have tried to delete the dialler in the normal way, but it just keeps coming back. Also, there are a couple of pictures from the web site he looked at that keep popping up at the same time as the dialler cuts us off. In addition to that the web page, www. Pureseekers. com. , keeps making itself my home page, maybe this is what triggers off the bogus dialler, I'm not sure. I'm on Windows 98 if anyone could give me any "Plain English" instructions as to how to get these things off I'd be really grateful. I have downloaded two programmes, one is Ad-Aware (the free version) and the other is Spyware Nuker 2004. I've scanned the machine with both of these and they found a couple of things but not the ones that I wanted them to find. Thanking you for reading this message. Kind regards, Jean.

Jean, Make sure you unplug your modem from your phone jack or you could end up with charges on your phone bill for calls to some far out countries. Then, have someone knowledgeable look at your PC. Also be sure that your system is protected by the latest AV software definitions that you use. Jean, Spyware Nuker is considered Spyware. You should try Spybot. It is updated frequently, so perhaps it will fix your problem. It is free, but they welcome donations. Hi listers, Can someone tell me if Windows Xp enables me to extract and save a few bars from songs on CDs please? I am putting together a genealogy slide show with music in Powerpoint. Windows 98SE use to have a function where you could take a few bars or notes from a song and save them as a sound file, but I cant find how to do it in XP. Any suggestions. Regards Judith Neville
Dear Listers About a month ago I was complaining that we were having trouble surfing the Internet using our new computer and dialup. We were getting a lot of "The page cannot be displayed." Since then I have talked to the nerd at the ISP. He led me through a procedure to get the 56K modem to slow down. Now our surfing is going smoothly. I hope this helps someone with a 56K modem. Joan
