A typical file name is "D://gens data/genealogy data/misc census stuff/Derbyshire 1881 census" If I called it "Derbyshire 1881 census" I wouldnt know it from other files named the same but under other folders. And I thought I was being so methodical. Thanks Art, I will have to figure out another way of filing stuff. genlistlass, UK

Having got that far I deleted my temp. and Temporary internet files before doing a full scan and discovered I now have a Norton protected recycle bin. Being a very nervous deleter I am not sure what to do with the newer presentation of an uneraser option. Having put my stuff into the recycle bin I want to get rid, especially as it now seems to fill with deleted spam/deleted emails/ etc. Can some patient soul take me step by step through this one so I can easily get rid of unwanted stuff. I would also like to know if I can get rid of a setup icon which appeared on my desktop along with another NP1OESD.exe while downloading Norton. Again, in words of one syllable please. TIA Heather

Just copy the things you would like to burn to a CD to a new folder, burn it to CD, and then delete the contents of the folder (since you would have copies in other locations and two are not needed). Hope this is a little easier to understand. Art

The rightmost icon in my Open window in word 2000 on Win 98 machine is the "Views" icon, at least that's what the popup tool tip says. The down arrow at it's right lets you choose the details view, clicking on it cicles you through the available options. You sometimes have to enlarge the window or change the column widths so that you can see the rightmost ones. Alfred Eller RootsMagic-Users-Admin@RootsWeb.com ======================== ==============

    3. Bob, you can quickly change the order of sorting by clicking in the column headings - NAME, SIZE, TYPE, DATE MODIFIED. The sorting is indicated by a small arrowhead in whichever column the main sorting is being done on. If it is pointing up in the NAME column, the sorting will be in A-Z fashion with numbered folders first depending on any you have. If is pointing down, the sorting is reversed. Any of the other columns can be used for sorting in this fashion too. You can quickly change this sorting order at any time to suit your needs. 3. Bob, have you tried placing your cursor on the title bar of the FIND & REPLACE window, hold down your left mouse key and "drag" the search box out of the way (the cursor has to be in the title bar)? I do that all the time in Excel (or just about any other Microsoft program). The columns are (a) # in Census Order, (B) Surname, (C) Given, (D) Title, (E) Men, (F) Boys, (G) Females, (H) Other, (I) Comments and some administrative columns. If the spreadsheet is sorted in Census # and I want to search for a person, I can enter the surname and go to the first occurrence of the name. I would like to be able to search on the surname/given name combination. However the Search Screen is over the surname and I have to close search to see the complete name. The Search Screen does not move as in WORD 2000 so that the target can be read. I can sort the transcription in Surname, Given Name order. But then I loose the ability to see the neighbours in the enumeration. Is there a way to make the Search Screen move in Excel as it does in WORD. I can import the Excel file into a table in a WORD document, but can I sort on Surname/Given? 3. Something is wrong somewhere. I have Excel 2000 and I can move the find window by putting the mouse cursor in the title bar, the blue line at the top, pressing the button and dragging it anywhere I want it. Do you mean that you have the surnames in one column, and the given names in another? You can sort the thing on any three columns in Excel. Of course, you would have to put the census number in every line to get it sorted that way again.
