    1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] JPEGS IMAGES TO WORD DOCUMENTS
    2. Alfred d. Eller
    3. A JPEG immage is a photo or graphic immage of a something. In the case of a page of text, it is just a picture of that page so OCR or copying it by hand are about your only options for changing it to editable text. Some OCR software will read JPG files directly so that you do not have to print and then scan them into the program. I have "OmniPage Pro14" and it does this. I like it because I can "scan" a page with my digital camera, then bring it home and OCR it. It is a whole lot easier than carrying the scanner, and computer to the court house. I ordered OmniPage Pro14 through: http://www.scantips.com/ It was about 1/3 the regular price that way. There is the other option of inserting the file into the word document as a picture. 3. Lance, That could certainly be the answer. Since I am not accustomed to receiving e-mail from this person, I thought it was strange to get any e-mail, but what you explained makes sense. Also, I do like the idea of not sending addresses. I generally delete all the previous addresses in mail that I send, but bcc's are an even better idea, as I prefer the protection of privacy. Thanks for the enlightenment!!!!! Rose -----Original Message----- From: Lance [mailto:hty31b5@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2004 11:07 PM To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] E-mail???? Rose, most likely the sender has placed your address in the "BCC:" address field. This hides the address or addresses of any recipients so that the other recipients do not know you (or others) have received that particular message. This, incidentally, is a good way of forwarding messages to a large number of people. All the addresses are hidden and if, by chance, the same message is forwarded again by one of those recipients, none of those original addresses are passed on. Think of the number of times you have probably received messages with a multitude of addresses in the "TO:" field. Think of the consequences if that message eventually ended up in the hands of a spammer! Make it a rule: if you are writing one message to several individuals place ALL the addresses in the "BCC:" field. This protects everyone's privacy. 3. Rose, Check the full headers on the message - you will probably find that the message is indeed addressed to you - but the originator may well have put your address in the BCC field (blind carbon copy) which actually means that no-one sees your address in any of the normal header fields. Thanks Art, I am usually backing up my whole D drive, that's where I keep all my data. You have given me an idea. If I sort my files by date modified, I can backup only those that have been changed since the last back-up? Does that make sense and will it work? genlistlass, UK

If I sort my files by date modified, >I can backup only those that have been changed since the last back-up? > >Does that make sense and will it work? Yes it makes sense and will work perfectly. Here is what I do. You need not follow this as I offer it only as an example to help with your idea. I compress my files as I complete the tasks with them (using a program similar to WinZip). I make notes of what the file contains which I print out and save in a binder. I name the files using the date. Such as, 2K40719. Where 2K4 would be the year 2004. 07 is the month of July and 19 would be the day of the month. Using this method I only need to transfer to a CD the newly created files. Saves time and space on the CD. It also acts as a reminder of what I worked on for that particular day, which I've found to be of quite some use! Hope this will give you some ideas of various ways to store your documents and allows you to see the flexibility of ways you can do backups! Take care, Art

    3. Perhaps you may have more success if you copy the backed up files on the CD back on to your hard drive, then try to restore or open them from there. To do this you may have to change the file attributes when they are copied back to your hard drive. Right click the file, select PROPERTIES, and remove the selection from in front of READ ONLY. Do this step before you attempt to open or restore the backups. Lance -----Original Message----- From: genlistlass [mailto:genlistlass@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, 18 July 2004 16:57 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] CD rewriter playing up! Every time I back up my genealogy data to a CD, problems occur. When I try to upload my FTM files or even some Word file, often it says the file is damaged and won't open. Yet when I burnt the disc it always says its OK. Maybe the problem arises when I start burning, a window opens saying that the file names are not right and can it fix them. I always say yes and it seems to be the very long files that are in sub/sub/sub/folders, hidden in the depths of the PC. I've not been able to check whether they are the files that don't open as they flash away so fast. I'm using a Sony rewriter and Roxio Easy 6.0. "genlistlass" in UK --- avast! As I posted before. If you use a database program, it will accomplish everything you desire! You wouldn't have to redo your Excel spreadsheet. Just import the data into the database. The only additional work would be the linking of information for queries. The database would allow as many results (such as neighbors, street names, house numbers, etc.) to a search as you set it up to return. Art
