I went to the Norton web site and this is what they recommend. * Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP). * Update the virus definitions. * Restart the computer in Safe mode or VGA mode. * Run a full system scan, and delete all files that are detected as W32.Spybot.Worm. * Delete the value that was added to the registry. * Delete any zero-byte files in the Startup folder. If you need help with any of these steps, it is described in detail at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/fcvw You might have problems updating the virus definitions. However this is an older type of worm and should be in the definitions for the 2004 version. Skip that step or try to update in Safe Mode, if it lets you. This worm is in circulation thru KaZaA and mIRC. If you use one or both of those, that is most likely how you got infected. Be careful in the future! Let us know of you results. Good luck! Art

    1. JPEGS IMAGES TO WORD DOCUMENTS
    2. Mal Parr
    3. I've been emailed a large quantity of pages of text, saved as JPEG images. Is there a quick and easy way to convert these to Word documents? At present I have opened the first one as a jpeg image, done a print of it, scanned the print as a text document, then OCR'd it and finally saved it as a Word document. This seems extremely long-winded. When I tried a "Save as" on the jpeg, to save as a Word document, I ended up with a page of gobbledegook. Any advice greatly appreciated. Mal, W. Australia.

    3. Your use of the date in naming your files is interesting, Art, but why abbreviate the year? If you enter it in full as say "20040719" or even "2004-07-19" it is much more "telling" and is universally recognized. The other advantage of using your method and the above way is that all files sort both chronologically and numerical at the same time. There is an article describing this method and how it is being used universally around the world in libraries and institutions at this site: http://www.iso.ch/iso/en/prods-services/popstds/datesandtime.html#five Lance -----Original Message----- From: dolphin213 [mailto:dolphin213@cox.net] Sent: Monday, 19 July 2004 19:37 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] CD rewriter playing up! >Thanks Art, I am usually backing up my whole D drive, that's where I keep >all my data. You have given me an idea. If I sort my files by date modified, >I can backup only those that have been changed since the last back-up? > >Does that make sense and will it work? Yes it makes sense and will work perfectly. Here is what I do. You need not follow this as I offer it only as an example to help with your idea. I compress my files as I complete the tasks with them (using a program similar to WinZip). I make notes of what the file contains which I print out and save in a binder. I name the files using the date. Such as, 2K40719. Where 2K4 would be the year 2004. 07 is the month of July and 19 would be the day of the month. Using this method I only need to transfer to a CD the newly created files. Saves time and space on the CD. It also acts as a reminder of what I worked on for that particular day, which I've found to be of quite some use! Hope this will give you some ideas of various ways to store your documents and allows you to see the flexibility of ways you can do backups! Take care, Art --- avast! 3. Vicki, Graphic files are pictures. Since they are coming from known people, there shouldn't be any problem with reading them. The letters could also contain HTML (web) formatting and that would/could take them longer to download. It shouldn't matter what ISP they come from. 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] E-mail????
    2. Lance
    3. Rose, most likely the sender has placed your address in the "BCC:" address field. This hides the address or addresses of any recipients so that the other recipients do not know you (or others) have received that particular message. This, incidentally, is a good way of forwarding messages to a large number of people. All the addresses are hidden and if, by chance, the same message is forwarded again by one of those recipients, none of those original addresses are passed on. Think of the number of times you have probably received messages with a multitude of addresses in the "TO:" field. Think of the consequences if that message eventually ended up in the hands of a spammer! Make it a rule: if you are writing one message to several individuals place ALL the addresses in the "BCC:" field. This protects everyone's privacy. 3. This is a known problem with Windows. MS offered a patch, some time ago, but it failed to fully solve the problem. The easiest way to correct the CRASH, is to turn off the Standby feature. 3. Lance, It was back in the days of floppies (before CD-Writers became 'standard' equipment) when I first started this method. Space was a concern. That is the way I first started doing it and to keep everything uniform and standardized, I've just continued. There is no longer any advantage to abbreviating the year. The web page was a very interesting article. Since I came up with the method myself, I had no idea it was universally being used!
