I have recently changed my subscriptions to rootsweb mailing list to be sent to my hotmail address rather than my usual address because of the spam problems. (not that its helped any yet :-( Does anyone else have the digests arriving erratically? For instance I received the Gen-comp-tips list digest number 217 on the 18th July but didn't get 216 until the 19th. The Aberdeen digest numbers 245 on 16th July 248 on 18th July but I still haven't received numbers 246 and 247. From 248 to 254 arrived in order then 255 on 24th July but no 256 yet and I have received 257 today. Is it caused by hotmail? Thanks Kerryn

Hi Art, I just checked the settings under Microsoft VM. I have "Java console enabled" and JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled". It wasn't working with those two. I just went and also checked "Java logging enabled" and it still doesn't do anything. Thanks for telling me I shouldn't have those checked. I had checked the first two last week in trying different things to make this work. Will uncheck them all now. I'll have to talk to my brother about the java scripting. We are each doing a different part of the web page. The slideshow is his and I seem to be the only one left that it won't work for. I had thought of Zone Alarm, too. Made sure the pop-up feature is off and still can't view the photos ........ Found it. I thought I had already tried turning Zone Alarm off before and it didn't work. But, just turned it off now and it works now. Problem solved. Thanks, Patty At 05:15 PM 7/24/2004, you wrote: >Patty, > >In Internet Explorer, go to Tools> Options> Advanced Tab. I've just been doing some "housekeeping" on my genealogy files and renaming them and making them more accessible to a backup! As suggested by your good selves:-) BUT. When I load them onto my other PC far away, I'm going to have a lot of duplicates, aren't I? With different file names but same data. IF I sort them by modified as suggested by your good selves, will that help again??? I fear I am going to get into a terrible muddle and might just lose VITAL stuff. Is there any way of printing out complete lists of what folders are on the C or D drive? Print Screen wont help here.......... Then I can compare the old with the new and rename the old folders on the other far away PC accordingly. Or am I going to make a complete dogs breakfast of the whole thing and I shouldn't have "fiddled" in the first place??? (Sometimes when I "fiddle" with PC, I crash it and I usually have to pay 50 quid to get a fella to put it right again! In this instance, I am working with my D drive which is my data drive. The crashing usually occurs in the C drive where all the programmes lurk.) genlistlass
Ever since I upgraded to XP I have had a sluggish mouse as soon as I switch on the computer. It is as if the ball needs cleaning. However, when I eventually get through to the internet it behaves normally. Any solutions? Thanks, Art. ----- Original Message ----- From: "dolphin213" <dolphin213@cox.net> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2004 6:47 AM Subject: Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Music Conversions It would be better to connect the cable into the line-in on your sound card. Using mic will give you more added hiss and pops to the recording and I don't think anyone would be happy with the results. All of this would depend on the output of the device you are recording from. You may need a "Y" type of cable if your device has an line out for each channel. If it has an amp or pre-amp it could damage the sound card using the microphone connection! Be careful and do some research about your hardware before attempting this! Thanks, Doris. It had occured to me that maybe there was a way of converting to a CD but I hadn't a clue as to how. I hope it helps. Doris Turn tapes and records into CDs Q. I've got a bunch of tapes and records that I'd like to put on CD. Can you walk me through the process? Connect your tape or record player to your sound card's mic terminal with a 1/8" mini jack. If you're unsure where to look, check your computer's user manual. Open the Volume Control. Click Start>All Programs (or Programs)>Accessories>Entertainment> Volume Control. Click Options>Properties. Click Recording, under Adjust Volume for. Ensure Microphone has a check mark next to it. Click OK. Make sure the Select box under Microphone is checked. Next, you'll need software to convert the analog music (your tape or record) into digital form to place on CD. Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a great free program. Install and open Audacity. Click the record button (it's the red circle) and start playing your record or tape. You can do this one of two ways. You can record each side of the tape or record into one big file and break up the tracks later. Or, you can record each song as an individual file. I find it much easier to record each individual song as a file. After you record a song, stop the tape or record and hit the stop button in Audacity. Click File>Export as WAV. Name your song file. Continue until you have recorded each song from the tape or record. Since there are silent spots and probably some pops and hisses, you'll want to clean up and edit the .WAV files. Audacity has a noise removal effect. It also allows you to edit unwanted breaks and more. If you want more creative audio effects and editing techniques, Audacity has online tutorials and a downloadable manual. Once you have cleaned up all of your files, they're ready to burn to CD. Windows XP has built-in software that allows you to burn files onto a CD. There is also a free program called burn4free (http://www.burn4free.com/). Or, use the software that came with your CD burner. ----- Original Message ----- From: Roy Nicholas To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, July 23, 2004 4:27 PM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Music Conversions Hi Listers, I have just rejoined the list after a break I am trying to find a way to convert 78 rpm and 33 rpm recorded music to a CD format .Can anybody help . Patty, In Internet Explorer, go to Tools> Options> Advanced Tab. Check you Microsoft VM settings. Background: Due to legal problems between MS and Sun (the makers of Java) MS stopped using Java and created their own version. They called it Virtual Machine (VM). This however, has been known to have serious security flaws and has since been turned off by patches. You can turn it back on with the above method. I would return to the previous settings after leaving your web page. You might consider not using the Java language and revert to simple thumbnails for your web page. There are several free programs that will do this without the use of Java. Or if you desire the 'slide-show' consider Flash. The other thing that could be blocking them is the ZoneAlarm. This program has been known to block certain picture files. Take care, Art >My turn for a question. I hope this is not out of line for this list. Just a thought. XP allows some programs to run as in an earlier version of Windows. I had to choose Windows 95 Compatibility Mode to run one program properly. Right click on the program icon, select Properties, and then Compatibility Mode. Don't know if this will help you, but it's worth a try. Or go to XP Help on your computer and select Fixing a Problem. That helped me once when something wouldn't run right. I can't recall whether I've run the 1881 UK census on my XP computer, but I have successfully run the 1880 US census there. (I have XP Home edition, original installation when I bought my computer.) I have encountered another problem now that I have upgraded to Windows XP and seek help and/or suggestions. The problem is that I have the 25 CD 1881 British Census. It is not now accessible via WXP ........... When I try to search I am invited to place a name in the search box and up comes a list of those names I select a candidate from that list that has potential and, when I do so,I get a dialog box saying; "Error loading the registry information for 1881 British Census .......... Unable to change titles" I might add that I have unistalled this program several times and reinstalled with the original viewer (2.0) and and update (4.0) without success. Any Thoughts? Joe
