A line has to be drawn somewhere and I'm the one doing the drawing. The mandate of this list is to help people with computing and their genealogical research. I'm emphatically certain that "Smiley Central" falls outside the mandate. People who have been on this list for a while know that I let a lot of "off- topic" discussion go through without comment. End of discussion on the list re: smiley central. Thanks! My feeling is that any help that can be provided to us may help in a roundabout way with our genealogical research. It may not help directly, but it makes one aware of dangers that we may run across in our computer searching and downloading. It made me aware of reading the fine print of everything before I download it. The more we know....the more we grow. These are my feelings. Vicki
Thanks for all the information from all you kind folks, most of the emails I saved , pertained to my genealogy in some way, a name I wanted to see if it connected to any of my families or some thing I wanted more time to study it out, and see if I could put is with any of my searches, I can read them in the documents folder, but find I don't use that as often as I would if it were still in a subfolder in Outlook Express, however, I need to go through all those folders in the document folder and clean those too. Maybe some day before I have a big crash I will get that done. Peggy in Texas
As list admin I'd like clarification as to how "Smiley Central" would help you in your genealogical research. ;-) (Of course, this is notwithstanding all the help our list members have provided - let's just remember the purpose of this list) Ken Quinn, List Admin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug & Jan Stapleton" <stapleton@iprimus.com.au> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 7:39 PM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Smiley Central > Can SKS tell me is it safe to use the Smiley Central stationary and characters for emails.... > > I gather from reading the emails on the list that "Incredimail" can monitor your emails if you have this in place.... > > Would the "Smiley Central" be the same... > > I am not all that familiar with computers and from reading the emails to this list I am learning a lot > Thank you > > cheers > Jan > > > ==== GEN-COMP-TIPS Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe from this list send a message to GEN-COMP-TIPS-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message. > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. Pat, Click on one of the messages that you want to save to highlight it. Then press the Ctrl+A keys. This will highlight all the messages in that folder. Go to File > Save As. In the window that opens navigate to where you want to save it and name the file you want to save the messages as. Use .txt as the Save as type. This will save it to a text file that you can open with notepad or any word processor. Take care, Art >I have been putting all my emails that contain Genealogy info in a sub >file from my in box in Outlook Express. I just today downloaded Smiley Central before I received the tip. It was fortunate that I didn't have 9.0 AOL downloaded. Because I didn't, I was unable to use the Smiley program. Thank goodness for this tip. I was going to go ahead and download 9.0. I've uninstalled the Smiley. Think this will take care of any problems I may have? Vicki Billings
Anthony, the messages you are receiving are the result of someone else's computer being infected with a virus. Your address was obviously on the address book in that computer. The messages are "spoofing" your address for want of a better word and it is nothing you have done. The only way it will cease is when the infected computer is cleansed of the virus. The best thing to do is just delete them and ignore them. Better still, set up a rule in your mail program to delete them on arrival then you won't have to worry about them. Mailwasher PRO would help in that regard, by the way as it would delete them BEFORE you download them: http://entier.ecosm.com/system/redir.php?ad=15&aid=2359 Lance -----Original Message----- From: Anthony Windrum [mailto:anthony@awindrum.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:12 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] unwanted mail I am being plagued by many bogus "cannot deliver mail" etc. (22 this morning). Vicki, I would recommend you run Ad-Aware and SpyBot to clean up anything left over from your un-installation. This would clean up your system and would be recommended to do on a regular basis. Hope this helps. Art >I just today downloaded Smiley Central before I received the tip. It was >fortunate that I didn't have 9.0 AOL downloaded. Just a little addition to Lance's tip. There are now graphic cards on the market that will support 2 monitors. I would recommend one of those as using two cards can cause conflicts. In the folder view, right click on the inbox. You will see New Folder. Click on that and name the folder, click OK and it is created. Art >Where do you put them in Outlook Express? I have a bunch I would like to >move, too, but I can't figure out where.
Peggy, Hold down the Ctrl key as you select the messages you want to move and you can move them as a group to one folder. Where do you put them in Outlook Express? Jan, It is just like IncrediMail. They track your usage. Read the END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT . http://www.funwebproducts.com/eula/ Hope this helps. Bill Houdek's e-mail referencing having two monitors, put my thought process flowing. Not knowing much about computers, I didn't realize that it was possible to have two monitors. Does this mean that two monitors can be connected to one computer....that I could have Ancestry. com opened on one monitor and have my family tree maker open on the other computer"
Not sure if this is the proper forum but wonder if there are opinions? Have been seeing discussion on the benefit of having two monitors in operation at the same time. Could have my Genealogy program, Legacy, open on one and Ancestry on the other and not have to move back and forth all the time. It seems like a good idea but could be costly. Any thoughts, downsides? Thanks Bill Houdek bhoudek@swbell.net
If you click FILE|IMPORT you will then see the Import Wizard which will take you through the steps of importing your IE Favourites.
