If you actually ordered these on a common variety credit card you are very safe. If your card is fraudulently charged all banks in US must limit your liability to $50. Usually none. I assume UK are similar. If, however, you have a debit card that withdraws direct from your bank account, you could have a problem, because money is already withdrawn. Many internet sellers use a processing firm that may or answer or acknowledge with a different name or parent company. The worst thing you can do on-line is to use a cashier's or certified check [or CASH or wire transfer!] . The next worst is to use a personal check. Regular credit card [not debit card] is very safe. If you don't receive the goods, refuse to pay, the credit card company will back you. I know some people cannot get a credit card that is not the debit variety. My advice is not to have it on your primary checking account. If number is "stolen" you could suddenly face a zero balance. Regards, Bob

Mary, I know how terrible you feel about this, but I'm sure with some of the solutions that will come from this group will solve the problem. Let me give you some advice I received several years ago: Get a special credit card just for online purchases. We have one where we keep a maximum of $1,000, but usually ot usually it's around $500 or $600, and that account is used strictly for online purchases. This suggestion came from several people who consistently make online purchases of computer software, for instance. In fact, one man told me he had several credit cards with low balances and switches from one to the other to make his purchases, the reason being that way no one card was the one always in use for one website. Hope this helps. Pat At 12:07 PM 8/11/2004, Mary wrote: >I was wondering the more knowledgable listers comments on the safety of >using a credit card to purchase over the internet. Windows XP Service Pack 2 was released yesterday (10 August 2004) to IT Professionals and Developers. Expect it very soon to be released to the general public. The full update package is 266 MB. Microsoft has announced that the general public version will be a smaller download. How much smaller remains to be seen. I'm sure that they will also offer a CD version of the complete package as they have always done this in the past. A CD version of the update may be free or they may charge a small S&H fee (usually they send out CDs with a $4.95 S&H fee). I HIGHLY recommend that if you are using XP that you install this update as soon as possible. I shall post additional information as it becomes available. Art

If I am transcribing or copying stuff from one program to another I open both and flick between them with ALT-TAB. Delete or minimise any other screen that intervenes. Try that right now! Very handy. If you are asking about moving messages within OE, that can easily be achieved. Just right-click the INBOX folder name, select NEW FOLDER from the context menu and then name the new folder. Then go to your INBOX, highlight the message/s to be moved, hold down your mouse button and "drag" the message/s over onto the newly created folder. Release the button and your messages will now be in the new folder. To move messages into this new folder, you can create a rule to do just that. Refer to HELP on the steps to create RULES. Yes, Jan, as Art advised it is similar to Incredimail. There are also other reasons why e-mail messages should be only in PLAIN TEXT. These sites offer some good reasons: http://www.mail-list.com/list_owner/plain_text_email.html http://www.frontierfleet.net/email/index.php One of the main reasons, which is also spelt out on the second site is the potential HTML messages have for passing on worms and viruses. Here is what is stated on the above (second) site, for those who don't take the time to visit it: [QUOTE] Embedded HTML or MIME attachments are the number one method of spreading virus, worm or Trojan programs. For instance, the Forgotten worm was written in Visual Basic Script and spread without any attachment. Instead, the worm code was embedded into the HTML formatted message body. The I Love You worm program exploited an ActiveX vulnerability and was executed just by viewing or previewing the e-mail message without opening any attachment. Likewise, embedded code could exploit some MS Office vulnerability as with Office ODBC Vulnerabilities and Specially Formed Script in HTML Mail can Execute in Exchange 5.5 HTML messages can trigger dialups to the Internet if they contain links to specific images called "web bugs" that are used to track message and advertiser viewing. See Web Bug FAQ. MIME encoded attachments with file extensions (BAT, COM, DOC, EML, EXE, HTA, JS, PPT, SHS, VBE, VBS, WSH, XL#) have been the most common method of sending viruses, worms and Trojan programs because their code will be executed by Windows and associated viewers or other MS programs when the attachment is opened. Windows uses the extension to determine what the default action on a file will be. For instance, a .txt file will open in Notepad and a .html file will open in Internet Explorer. Uncommon, but no less dangerous are file extensions (386, ACM, ACV, ADT, AX, BIN, BTM, CLA, CPL, CSC, CSH, DEV, DLL, DOT, DRV, HLP, HTM, HTT, INF, INI, JSE, JTD, MDB, MP#, MPP, MPT, MSO, OBD, OBT, OCX, OLE, OV#, PIF, PL, PM, POT, PP#, PPS, PRC, RAR, RTF, SCR, SH, SHB, SMM, SYS, VSD, VSS, VST, VXD, WSF, XL#, XLB, XTP). [END QUOTE] As most Lists and Groups insist that messages be in Plain Text, it is advisable to set your default format to Plain Text for ALL messages regardless of who it is to. Avoid any service (like the plague!) that offers to "fancy up" your messages. There will always be a hidden agenda. Yes, Bill, it is possible to use two monitors. Expensive? Well, yes it can be. You need another monitor of course, but you will also need a second graphics card installed in your computer. They range from moderate to expensive in pricing. Most likely they have not (originally) been saved in the correct format, Peggy, so that is why they are not now compatible with Outlook Express. OE messages need to be saved with the ".eml" extension. You have most likely saved them with the ".txt" extension (plain text). However, despite that problem, what you have done (in saving them in My Documents) is a good idea. This is because having too many messages stored in OE can cause the program to slow down, so it is best to save them in another location (as you have done). You can still read them from there and all the information is available. To access any future messages you save in My Documents, just make sure you save them with the ".eml" extension. Then all you will have to do is click on the message (in the My Documents folder) and it will automatically open in OE. The other thing to remember is that messages from Roots Web lists can always be accessed in the Archives for each List, so there is really no need to save those types of messages if they are only for casual reference. Thanks, folks for the comments. Was hoping an alternative might be to do split-screen with two separate programs at the same time. Recall some 20+ years ago seeing a demonstration of split screen usage. Not at that time knowing how to turn a computer on, it looked great but had no clue as to how to run it. I just recently discovered how to produce an e-mail using only 1/2 screen superimposed over, say, Legacy and that works great. Am running Win xp home & 312 ram with Pentium 111. Any thoughts here save forking over bunches of cash? Thanks again, Bill Houdek
