    1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Topic of this List
    2. Oh my gosh....I had promised myself that I would not write to this list again, but I have to have my say. I'm pretty new to this list, and I'll be the first to say that most of the time I have no idea what anyone is writing about when I read the e-mail. I'll also be the first to say that I'm computer illiterate. What I have noticed, though, is that Art and Lance address many of the problems. They both seem to have much knowledge when it comes to the computer. So what if the topic isn't something that I'm interested in. How long does it take to read these e-mails?? Seconds. Then hit the delete. It's as simple as that. Another list I subscribe to has someone constantly sending links to pictures of headstones in Texas. I have no family buried in this cemetery. Do I get upset? No I don't. I simply delete. Not everything that comes into my mailbox is something I'm interested in. But once in a while, something or someone I can relate to sends something to the list I subscribe to. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. With all that is happening in this world, why can't we just accept that we're all different....and each of us has our own needs. Let's just accept each other for what we are. Good people!!! 1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Topic of this List
    2. Hi Art > Ken, could you please answer this about what is an acceptable post and what is not? Where is the line drawn? Please advise of this so that we may all know. My personal view is that this list strays well "off-topic" on many occasions. In the past, I have hoped that Ken would make a stand when many topics irrelevant to genealogy have reared their heads, recently for example when there was discussion about how to put music into a digital format. Nevertheless, it is my view that Ken has possibly made an error of judgement in reprimanding you for posting about a Windows Upgrade. However, do we know all of the facts ? Are you a Microsoft employee who might have a vested interest in encouraging folks to download that Upgrade ? Have you and Ken crossed swords in the past ? On the face of it, I would have thought that it was time for Ken to clarify the situation, and then for us all to forget about it. That assumes that we know all of the facts, and that the issue is as simple as it seems. A simple Windows Upgrade - we all need to be reminded to check for them daily ! Most of all, I think that it's essential that a splendidly useful list doesn't simply disintegrate because of one disagreement. Let's all move on. Has someone one got the next problem for Art, Lance et al to solve ? Best wishes. 1. Topic of this List
    2. Lance
    3. Before replying to the news about Art's summary dismissal and subsequent reinstatement, I thought I would refresh myself on just what the topic of this list is. This is what the home page has to say: "Topic: A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding basic computer operating tips and trouble shooting guidelines for genealogy researchers". Perhaps the List owner may be able to clarify that statement, but the way I read it the topic of "Windows Service Pack 2" certainly falls within that definition ("basic computer operating tips"). After all 99.9% of members, I am willing to bet would be using Windows for their OS and a good percentage of those would be using XP. So without an operating system, where would their research be? Over a long period of time, Art, myself and others have answered more queries on this list than I can remember, with no one objecting to the "topics" for a very long time (I believe the one person who did (object) departed long ago). So what now is the definition of the "topic of this list"? If people are going to banned for posting a particular topic, while others post all manner of things, will that build a harmonious list? I think not. Perhaps those who have offered considerable help may have to look for more welcome "pastures" if the "ground rules" are going to be different for some and not others. Something we will have to consider. 2. Pat wrote: "If the Admin unsubscribes you or Lance the rest of us are lost so we might as well leave also.     Pat" I agree with you on that Pat. Both Art and Lance, and so many others, give their bits of knowledge freely to all of us that are on what I call "life support systems," meaning without their knowledge and help, I would be at a loss on using a computer most of the time. I am nervous enough just thinking about what the new XP Service Pack2 is going to bring, and the almost new start on using it again. I do know we need more security in using XP, and that the Service Pack is a good thing, but without these little tidbits of help that people give us, my one love in life, which is genealogy, would come to a complete halt on the unsafe Internet of today. I do understand also what Al is trying to say, to stay on topic whenever possible, and we should honor his wishes, but if now and then when a big change with using our computers for genealogy comes along, those that can help us through the changes are so welcomed on my part. I try to do my best to do this on all of the many lists that I am on, but I am getting hesitant to even ask questions on these lists for fear of doing something wrong. And now a related topic:) Has anyone had a problem when they go to use the Rootsweb databases, and even though I have a pop up blocker, there is one that sneaks through and is annoying. It is evidently a cartoon related version of a dual between Kerry and Bush? Just wondering if I am the only one having this problem. Thank you, Nancy O.

    3. Bill you can have a "split screen", just by resizing the screens of the programs you wish to view. You can place them side by side or one on top of the other or even divide the screen in quarters if you have four you wish to use. Some programs will let you open two databases in separate screens and you can switch from one screen to the other to make them active. It is just a case of experimenting. And much cheaper than having two monitors :-). -----Original Message----- From: bhoudek [mailto:bhoudek@swbell.net] Sent: Thursday, 12 August 2004 01:29 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Dual Monitors revisited Thanks, folks for the comments. Was hoping an alternative might be to do split-screen with two separate programs at the same time. Recall some 20+ years ago seeing a demonstration of split screen usage. Not at that time knowing how to turn a computer on, it looked great but had no clue as to how to run it. I just recently discovered how to produce an e-mail using only 1/2 screen superimposed over, say, Legacy and that works great. Am running Win xp home & 312 ram with Pentium 111. All you need to do is maintain good "housekeeping" with your OE files and don't accumulate more messages than your drive can handle. I also agree that if those people who are so very, very helpful are kicked off the list the rest of us may as well go also. 3. From a 'users' point of view, I would like to add the following : My wife uses her PC almost exclusively for genealogy. To be able to do this, we have to keep the system itself stable and up to date. This has meant that I have done numerous postings in the past on matters which might now seem 'off topic' such as spam, viruses, problems with XP and related MS products. These are all things which if they fail or are not kept up to date would make the PC useless as a genealogy tool. I found the early warning of the XP service pack to be helpful and one of the things, which, as a computer user rather than a computer 'buff' I would not have been aware of other than through this list. Just another of those things which helps us to keep the wheels turning on a day to day basis. I have received a great deal of help from Lance and others for which I have been grateful to them and also for the existence of this list. I feel a bit nervous about further postings now and do hope things can be clarified so that we can get back on track and maintain the very helpful resource which this list is to people like ourselves. 2. This is what I do when I am transcribing wills. I open the will (old English ones in my case) in a window at the top of the screen, and scoll through it so that the line I'm working on is at the bottom of the image. Then I open Word in a window below that and start typing my transcription. It works really well. I also have done it with websites where I have copied some information into Word and need to edit it. You can have both open and available at the same time. It does help to have a large screen monitor, but I even used to do this with my now geriatric Mac Classic.
