Hi Art Up to now I had the trial version and assumed that it wouldn't print because it was a trial version. ACDSee support felt that even a trial version should print but that the program uses `thumbnail data base files." There is now a version 6.o which might print -- except that it does not read the records! I had to do some begging to be permitted to get Version 5.0. Being a pollyanna I also thought that the full version might print. It doesn't. I will get back on their case but thought I would do some research on my own. Microsoft has Base Article 318926 dealing with this except that it's for windows XP. I do have contacts in France who recommended this program and have enlisted their help as well. In view of the very knowledgeable people on this list, I thought I might raise the question here. Maybe we can teach ACDSee a thing or two (she says wistfully). I will try the reinstall but already having had problems with the trial version, I'm not optimistic. > > >Has anyone had experience with this program? I forgot to mention on the previous post under this topic that I do have more extensive write ups of the programs. They will be offered to anyone that asks. Also, I'm sure that others will disagree with me about some of what I have written. That is understandable. I do not wish to get into any debates about the Pros and Cons of a program. What I have written is only my opinion and is to be used only as a guide to help you select the best program for you. Art
Has anyone had experience with this program? This is genealogy related -- at least the way I use it. I use it to view CDs from France that contain copies of Baptisms, Burials, Marriages from the 1600's onwards. While these CDs come with a viewer created by the Departmental Archives in France, since having reformatted my hard disk I can't use it. Other users have recommended Irfanview (workable but...) or ACDSee 5.0 (version 6.0 will not work!). I now have ACDSee 5.0 but cannot print with it. I keep receiving an error message that I have found on Microsoft's website but they relate the error to Windows XP -- I use Windows 98 SE. Any thoughts? Thank you! Lucy

Since it has been requested, here are my reviews of different genealogy programs. The listing is NOT all inclusive of every program available. It is only a sample of those that I use or have tested recently. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note that I do NOT have any connections to any of these programs in any way, shape or form other than a user. ========================================= ========================================= Family Tree Maker 11 Guide Rating - 3 1/2 Stars out of 5 NOTE: There is a new version called Family Tree Maker 2005 due out around 15 August 2004 The Bottom Line The ease of use and publishing features make it ideal for novice researchers who want an easy way to enter family data without dealing with much of the details of genealogy research. It is also arguably the best to quickly and easily create nice looking family charts, trees and family history books. Skip the deluxe version with the extras. Pros Very good publishing features Wide variety of trees, charts, and other printouts 30-day money-back guarantee Cons No download available No pedigree view for easy navigation GEDCOM import may drop data from unrecognized tags Doesn't output to HTML - Can only publish pages on FTM's Web site (read the agreement carefully before posting!) ======================================= Legacy Family Tree 5.0 Guide Rating - 4 Stars out of 5 The Bottom Line An intuitive interface, powerful collaboration features, and multiple views make it one of the best programs on the market, not even considering the fact that the Standard Version is free. The Deluxe Version, available for $19.95 download, offers a number of additional features found in many programs costing twice as much. Simple yet powerful and flexible. Pros Standard version is a FREE download Powerful merge features & split-screen views Frequent updates & added new features Cons No printed user manual Requires add-on program for fancy charts Can't customize source citation templates Has had 4 updates in recent days =============================== Personal Ancestral File 5.2 Guide Rating - 3 1/2 Stars out of 5 NOTE: There will be NO new versions or updates to this program. However support will still be offered. The Bottom Line One of the oldest and most popular genealogy software programs available, is available for free download. Powerful and full-featured, it is also very user-friendly, making it perfect for novices. If you want fancy charts, you'll have to pay for the add-on program, PAF Companion ($13.50). And if your primary goal is publishing a family Web site or book, there are better options. Pros Very intuitive and easy to use Customizable data entry templates Available for FREE download Cons Full range of charts and reports only available with add-on, PAF Companion Only basic multimedia capabilities Publishing options are limited ======================= RootsMagic 2.0 Guide Rating - 5 Stars out of 5 The Bottom Line If you're looking for genealogy software that's easy enough to use without the manual, yet full-featured enough to satisfy a professional genealogist, then you should definitely check out RootsMagic. From beautiful charts and flexible book publishing, to easy data entry and advanced sourcing, it offers features for all levels of genealogy researchers. Pros Simple, intuitive interface View and copy between multiple databases Customizable interface, fact types, reports and charts Cons Does not allow direct import - GEDCOM only Charts aren't very pretty in their default format (you can customize to get beautiful ones though) Only available for Windows ======================== The Master Genealogist 5.0 Guide Rating - 4 1/2 Stars out of 5 The Bottom Line If you like to track and record every last detail and your genealogy research is closing in on obsession, The Master Genealogist is the program of your dreams. While not the best choice for people who want something simple or don't like to read user manuals, it is a powerful, flexible and comprehensive program. Pros Flexible, customizable interface Imports data directly (without GEDCOM) from some other popular genealogy programs Outstanding source documentation options Cons Less intuitive than some genealogy software programs Steep learning curve due to the program's complexity Expensive compared to similar programs ========================== GenBox 3.2 Guide Rating - ? Stars out of 5 The Bottom Line I really haven't experimented much with this program as yet. Comments are only from initial testing. Pros Outstanding reports and charts Cons Less intuitive than others Steep learning curve Expensive ==================== Heredis Standard 7.2.1 Guide Rating - ? Stars out of 5 The Bottom Line This is another program that I have not used much. Comments are only from initial testing. Pros Unique 3D view of family charts Still does Tiny Tafel's Free download of standard version Cons No built in viewer for reports (opens word processor which makes it slower than other programs) Addition of Facts for individuals seems hidden Emphasis seems to be on media files not data ==========================

Are you planning on installing the Iomega Drive from your old machine to the new one or did your new machine come with an Iomega drive that can read your disks? If the former you will need a Driver, a software program, that may be on the WIN XP CD or that you can probably download from the Iomega web site. Did the Hard Drive on your old machine crash? If it is OK, then you could install it in your new machine, assuming a desk top, as a second HD. This thread gives me the idea of transferring my old Iomega drive to my new machine when I get one. I can back up on the old machine, remove and install the drive, load the software and get my data. bob gillis

Lucy, You could also try a re-install of the ACDSee version that will read the files. If both installations fail, then you maybe forced to use another program as Phil suggested. I went and read the Microsoft item and all it says is to upgrade to the latest version of ACDSee. You said that will not read the files. So that is of no help. Many thanks to all who have offered help on transferring UFT from Win98 to XP After what looks like a successful install I get a message: divide by zero or Overflow Error I can use all parts of the programme except for the very part that we all would want to use, namely the area for data. Any clues on how to overcome this situation would be marvellous. Bob (Gillis) you have me really worried now as I haven't yet tried put the Iomega driver on this machine. The suggestions for alternative programmes are truly appreciated but I am being stubborn and would prefer, if at all possible, to continue with UFT. Heather.

System Restore is a Windows XP service that runs in the background, continually monitoring changes in files, folders, and settings that are essential to the correct operation of the operating system. At regular intervals, System Restore takes a "snapshot" of your systems registry as well. If you encounter a problem that causes Windows to become unstable, you can start the System Restore Wizard in normal or Safe Mode and roll back your system files and registry to those saved from a previous date when, presumably, your system worked properly. System Restore cant perform miracles, but it can be a lifesaver in the following situations: * You install a program that conflicts with other software or drivers on your system. If uninstalling the program doesnt cure the problem, you can restore your system configuration to a point before you installed the program. * You install one or more updated drivers that cause performance or stability problems. Rather than using the Driver Rollback feature from Device Manager, use System Restore to restore all previously installed drivers. * Your system developed performance or stability problems for no apparent reason. This scenario is especially likely if you share a computer with other family members or coworkers who casually install untested, incompatible software and drivers. If you know the system was working properly on a certain date, you can use a restore point from that date or earlier and be reasonably confident that your system will return to proper operation. CAUTION: You cannot count on System Restore to protect you from viruses, worms, Trojan horse programs, and other malware. In fact, if your system contracts a virus, files stored in restore points created after that point might be infected also, and you run the risk of restoring the virus along with your system files. Use a reliable antivirus program, keep it up-to-date, and dont open e-mail attachments unless youre certain theyre safe. Dont rely on System Restore to protect you from data loss or backup mistakes. Restoring a backed-up configuration can undo damage only to your Windows system files; a restore point does not protect data files. If you inadvertently delete working data files or overwrite them with out-of-date backup copies, you will not be able to recover your data files unless you have a recent backup set. If you would like more information about System Restore, contact me off list. Hope this is of some help. Art
Heather, Give this a try. Highlight the icon you use to open the program. Press Alt+Enter. This will bring up the properties window. You should see a Compatibility tab. Click on that. In the first section, Compatibility Mode, click the check box labeled Run this program in compatibility mode for: . Select Windows 95 in the drop-down box. Click Apply then OK. Start the program and see if it works now. I know it's a "normal" message for the change. I want to UNDO the change if possible, or if not possible then after it's done go back to my default. The steps I used were: Tools, Options,Maintenance, Store Folder, and Change. When the box came up showing the "Change Browse", my cursor was accidentally resting on a file I didn't recognize, so I highlighted it to see what it was. Then the restart box came up. Lesson learned: don't be too curious when doing new things on PC. By System Restore, do you mean with my disk?? As you can see, I rarely have problems; that's why I don't know what you mean. Maybe the reason for my problem free PC for the past 6 yrs is no experimentation :):):). Hi Maureen, I am FAR from Lance, far from Lance, but I've used System Restore many times. It is a feature of Win XP that has saved me at least 5 times that I remember. It is a System Tool that Windows XP provides. (Other system tools would be scan disk, or defrag; it's a tool just like those programs are system tools) You access it by going to the Start menu, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, then System Restore. From my big XP book: "Special Edition, Using Microsoft Windows SP Professional, Bestseller Edition" by Robert Cowart & Brian Knittel [QUOTE] "System Restore is a fabulous mechanism which first appeared with Windows Me. Now Windows SP incorporates it too. System Restore enables you to restore the computer to a previously saved state. So, you can 'roll back' your computer to the way it was working before your dog jumped on the keyboard, or before you installed that stupid program or device driver that lunched your system. Here's how it works. Performing a system restore does not affect personal files, such as documents, Internet favorites, or email. It simply reverses system configuration changes and moves installed files to return the system to a stored state. System Restore automatically monitors your system for changes. Periodically easily identifiable restoration points are created. Plus, you can create your own restoration points manually." [END QUOTE] Restore points confused me a bit. It would have helped to know that a 'restore point' is simply a date to which I can restore. It's not a point, it's a point in time. You can go to the System Restore tool and look at it to see what you think. It's not one that will restore or do anything else unless you tell it to do it. I hope this helps until Lance can better explain. Did you take note of the actual steps you chose? You will need to record those to know where your Store Folder's new location will be. Did you backup your data BEFORE starting those steps? If in doubt, about your actions, do a System Restore NOW, back to a date before you started moving the folder today. That should allay your fears. I just went to the site you provided, copied the directions re "store folder" and before I could decide if I wanted to do this, a dialog box came up and said that changes would take effect when I shut off and restarted my computer. Now I'm afraid to shut off my computer in case ALL my emails move. How can I either get back to my old default store method or transfer only the emails I want put in the new store?? All you need to do is maintain good "housekeeping" with your OE files and don't accumulate more messages than your drive can handle. Again, there is good advice on INSIDEOE about compacting your OE folders, and in particular good advice about NOT using the auto compact feature: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm#auto Lance -----Original Message----- From: Phil Stevens [mailto:joe2phil@drizzle.com] Sent: Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:36 To: Gen.
