I recently received an image which is a ppt file. What program will open that? I tried IE but nothing happens. Any help would be appreciated. Lisa upstate NY
MicroSoft has a free reader for PowerPoint files. I downloaded it several months ago, but have yet to use it. Sorry, I don't remember the URL to get the download, but a search on Google ought to be able to locate it. (A friend had in the past sent me ppt files which I couldn't read, but she hasn't sent me any since I've had the reader.) Ladies and gents, sharing userids/passwords via this list is a no no. It gets you a permanent vacation from this list. That's good to hear, Walt, and confirms my thoughts too, on this excellent program. I have, or have used, most of programs available in recent years and Legacy is my choice, too. Well I certainly am not a research expert but I do also monitor the Legacy list and there are messages on a regular bases saying the individual is new to Legacy having just switched from ----, a high number from FTM. The Legacy list has grown tremendously in the 6 - 7 years I have been on it. Walt Conner --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. HI, I have been trying to save a copy of a ship manifest at Ellis Island by right clicking. It used to give me the option of saving it which I did then printed it out. Now it just tells me this function is disabled. To my knowledge I haven't changed anything, so how do I make this work with AOL? Nancy
Legacy is a good program. PAF is free.
> A question/statement about what was said. To refresh: > As for the increase in people saying that they are making the switch from > FTM, "lots of people are switching" This was just my casual observation to a question I have even forgotten, not intended to raise anyone's hackles. Legacy does have the best customer support of ANY program that I have ever had experience with. The others had problems but forget a free update or personal attention. Walt Conner
And my favorite program The Master Genealogist also has exceptional customer support! While it isn't cheap, it can be downloaded and used free for a month, to see if you like it. I've heard good things about Legacy, but have no desire to switch from TMG. Walt, I was just making an observation. I wasn't trying to refute what you said or even question your comments. My "hackles" did not get raised at all. I am sorry if you got the impression that it did. Legacy does have very good customer support (as does RootsMagic). Thank you Art It looks a little daunting at first, but I should be able to pick through it. I would also like to thank you for your kind offer to help me again off list if I get into trouble. I don't ask many questions of this list, but read everyone and lots have been stored for future reference. An especial thanks to yourself and Lance. Lance, I'm not trying to promote any program here on the list, but I am curious if you have tried the latest version of RootsMagic (v2.0)? Art >That's good to hear, Walt, and confirms my thoughts too, on this >excellent program. I have, or have used, most of programs available in >recent years and Legacy is my choice, too.
A question/statement about what was said. To refresh: > >on what research do you base that statement: "lots of people are >switching"? > >Well I certainly am not a research expert but I do also monitor the Legacy >list and there are messages on a regular bases saying the individual is new >to Legacy having just switched from ----, a high number from FTM. The Legacy >list has grown tremendously in the 6 - 7 years I have been on it. A growing user list could be both a good and bad indication. The good would be that it could/would seem to indicate more people were using the program. The bad could mean that more errors are being discovered, or more people need help understanding how to use it. As for the increase in people saying that they are making the switch from FTM, does this mean that they are "growing up" in their genealogy research and need a more robust program? For what reason are they making the change? I do believe that genealogy as a whole has grown in the time period mentioned. Therefore, the usage of all programs has increased. Just my thoughts. Art
Heather, > We wonder if the strike on my computer was through the cable/usb modem? Did your cable TV boxes also suffer? Do keep in mind that you may lose some data (or things maybe moved to different locations within the program) during the GEDCOM transfer, however, this maybe unavoidable. Do make sure that you print out the error report that will be created by your new program in order that you can fix the reported items. Art
Just curious, Walt; on what research do you base that statement: "lots of people are switching"? Hi Alfred That's exactly what I have been doing. It would be nice not to have all these extra steps but, that's life! Thank you for the suggestion. I would try copying the files you are interested in to a folder on the hard drive, changing the extension to JPG and try viewing them that way. You can delete them, or the entire folder when you are through with them if you want. Alfred D. To all those kind folks advising me on installing UFT on XP. This is not something I am likely to resolve quickly as I use my computer like I drive my car! Fine when all is well but I am useless when it is not. My computer crashed during an overhead storm despite being connected via an anti-surge cable which was turned off at the time. The computer crashed with a damaged hard drive, my printer was rendered permanently U/S, the ntl broadband modem was blown so it has been quite traumatic. My husband's computer in the same room etc but not connected to the internet was unaffected. We wonder if the strike on my computer was through the cable/usb modem? I do have a small laptop running on '98 and I am hoping I can install UFT on that, convert my backup to GEDCOM and transfer the data back to my main computer when I have decided on an alternative FH Prog. The only snag is the memory of the laptop. Does that sound logical or am I barking mad due to desperation. Many thanks to all who are patiently reading my burblings and offering ideas. Heather
And may I suggest you make sure you close down all the running programs before you reinstall it. I use enditall it made life easier?.
