    3. Hi, I am back again like a bad penny with Unknown Error 32 I backed up the UFT project from my laptop running '98 to two floppies to transfer to TMG running on XP and all seemed well until I put in the second disc when the error message appeared. The Backup is .sqz After the failure of the first discs I repeated the excercise with fresh discs and the same error message appeared. I am running two Demo FH Programmes, TMG mainly for the ability to transfer without GEDCOM and RootsMagic, to assess which programme best suits my needs. At this stage it looks as though RootsMagic will win regardless of this glitch purely on ease of use and appearance. TIA Heather

    3. I can't keep still any longer. RootsMagic home page: http://www.rootsmagic.com/ where you can download a demo copy. You can only enter 50 people, but it will import a much larger GEDCOM file than that. -- Anything you enter into the demo can be retained and used in a full copy if you decide to go that route. The RootsMagic message boards: (Where most of the problems are listed, some solutions are given and a few praises are stated.) http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ I run the RootsMagic Users mail list and answer a few questions, but I do not work for RootsMagic. 3. I have found this site to be a great help when I try to explain about scanning and saving pictures. http://www.scantips.com/ If your HP software is the same as mine: When scanning, and you get the preview of the picture, go to the menu just above the picture in the "HP Scanning" Window and click the advanced button, and choose resolution. If you want to send it as an email, choose 75, unless it is a very small picture that you want to enlarge a bit, then choose a bit higher resolution. As you change the resolution, notice how the size, listed below the picture, changes. If it is a black and white picture, scanning in grayscale will save space too. Save the picture to a folder, then open the email program and attach the picture to it. I couldn't figure out the connection between the HP scanning program and email. I do not think you need a new computer just to send photo attachments with emails. Alfred D. 3. I too have WIN 98. It was installed on my Compaq when I bought new in 1998. I've never had the urge to upgrade, especially with all the frustration I see with friends and relatives who have. A word about buying secondhand: I would never even CONSIDER it. The prices I see for new are so inexpensive here, eg $499.00 COMPLETE!!! (avg $200 used and not complete). 3. Peggy, I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm for Win Me, but it is generally acknowledged as the worst version of Windows Microsoft ever released. Win XP is generally accepted as their best effort yet, despite the need for this SP2 upgrade. From all reports it really is an upgrade more than just a bunch of patches. The discussion you have been reading is mainly about handling the "size" of the SP2 download, not with any problems within Win XP. This site will help you understand what SP2 is all about and perhaps show you what you may be missing with Win Me: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/preinstall.mspx This chart shows good reasons to switch to Win XP Home edition: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/whyupgrade/top10.mspx While this chart shows the difference between XP HOME and XP PRO editions http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx Lance -----Original Message----- From: Peggy Broughton [mailto:peggyj@our-town.com] Sent: Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:02 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Genealogy and a healthy system I don't have XP. 1. Can't open some folders
    2. Martyn Peart
    3. Can anyone help with this frustrating problem. I have a large number of photos, including hundreds of family history photos, stored in various folders . I am unable to open some (not all) of these folders as when I try, after a pause of a few seconds I get a window displaying the following message: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. When I close this window I get back to the desktop and sometimes but not always the desktop is on a white background and I am invited to "restore my active desktop" by clicking on this button. This is a very frustrating problem that I have been unable to solve as I am unable to access some of my photos. I also have copies of the photo folders stored on an external harddrive but I get the same problem here when I attempt to open the files. I am running Windows XP and have Norton automatic Live Update protection and Spybot so I am confident I have no viruses in the system. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. 3. Sue, WinZip has a 21 day trial period. After that it costs USD29.00. A zip program is an essential tool on nay computer as so many files arrive that way. It's also a handy way of compressing your own files to conserve space. I have used WinZip for years and it is always reliable.
