    3. Be sure you are in the "box" you want to search. Click the Find button in the toolbar or go to Edit > Find and choose the option : Message will search all folders and "Message in this folder" is just that. Do not enter anything in the top three fields: From, To or Subject unless you are sure about it. Enter the word you want to find in the message field, set the time limits and click new search. I can't seem to get the Find in this folder to find the second instance, unless I use the "Advanced find" button. Alfred D. 2. Ron Nourse
    3. Hello, list I have been meaning to join this list for some time, to lurk and learn, but I now have a problem that I'd like advice on. When searching the IGI for wanted names, I now find that when I check the wanted records, and try to prepare them for downloading, the action is aborted. The download screen (which would give the number of records selected etc) briefly appears and then vanishes. If I click again the program says "No records selected" and I find that my selections have become unchecked. It is a while since I tried to download from this site, but I used to find it straightforward. The only things that have changed in the meantime are that I now have a PC running Windows XP instead of 98, and I have recently installed the Zone Alarm Pro firewall and associated applications. The only thing I could think to do was to temporarily disable the firewall (which seemed pointless) but no that had no effect. Can anyone advise me, please? Ron Cheltenham, UK

    1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Genealogy Search Question
    2. Lance
    3. Janet, there are a couple of things you can do to speed up the return to the HOME page. The easiest way is to press ALT-HOME (the HOME key is on your keyboard on the right). Another way is to click on the IE icon showing in your taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I will reveal a menu showing all the current open screens - select your HOME page. The other and more secure way is to use OPERA. Opera "tabs" all open pages across the top of your screen so it's just a simple matter of selecting the HOME one: www.opera.com Opera is a far more secure browser than IE and is faster in its approach to searching. Lance -----Original Message----- From: Janet Yancey [mailto:jjc@gvtc.com] Sent: Friday, 20 August 2004 23:44 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Genealogy Search Question As an example, I am subscribed to Ancestry.com. When I am ready to "back-out" of the Program. Do you do the following? 1. Hit the "back arrow" in the left corner, and continue to back out and return to your home page. OR 2. Just hit the "Home Page" button at the top of your screen, i.e.: MSN, etc. Sometime I am so far into searching, it takes me quiet a while to back out and go back to my home page. 2. Virginia L. Aldridge
    3. Ron, I do not know about the download process from LDH as I do not use it to gather my data, since it brings too much junk with it. What I do is: Open notepad You can toggle between notepad and the Family Search site by clicking the icon on the status bar at the bottom of the page Highlight all the data on the page that I want to obtain Click Ctrl+C to copy the material Place your cursor in notepad Click Ctrl+V and it pastes the highlighted data into notepad You can copy one page at a time; one after the other into notepad. When you have all the information you plan to obtain; you can either save it to the My doucments section or put it into any program that accepts text. Notepad is a handy little program that comes on Windows based systems and when you copy tables and colored selections into it, you only get the text. If you are interested, play with it and see if it will help you do what you need. There are many keystrokes that make things much easier here is a list of some of them: ALT + TAB -- Cycles through open applications CTRL + ESC -- Brings up Start menu CTRL + Z -- Undo CTRL + Y -- Redo CTRL + A -- Select all CTRL + C -- Copies selected material CTRL + V -- Pastes selected material Good Luck, Virginia L.
