    3. I've never (or rarely) had problems with disconnections. I was on AOL for a dozen years, then got fed up with their poor tech response and their blocking RootsWeb mailing lists. I switched to Earthlink six months ago and have had no problems with disconnections, and have found their tech support to be fast and helpful. Hey, nothing is set in stone , if it works for you and you like I am all for that,,I don't agree with every thing on the way FTM says do it... either, as for the drops offs, some places in our part of Texas don't have any thing the the telephone company for an ISP, when we lived out in the boonies, all I could get was with the local Rural Coop or what use to be REA... not all of us have a choice .. if we are going to have computer service. 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] ZipZap- Zipping for the Relatively Inexperienced
    2. Lance
    3. A well written summation, David! Becoming too bogged down in technicalities is a trap many fall into. Stick to simple instructions and follow the prompts given by the program is the best mode of operation in most instances. Go off on technical side tracks or try to examine every little consequence of any action can create more disasters for an unwary user than they need. All of these zip programs have happy users. All of these programs do an acceptable job for most users - zip up files or un-zip downloads - that's enough for most genealogists. Just let the program do its job no matter which you use. Lance -----Original Message----- From: David Creelman [mailto:davidcr@sympatico.ca] Sent: Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:41 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] ZipZap- Zipping for the Relatively Inexperienced I'm not sure WinZip or any of the other Zip programs suck. They all work pretty well, but some put their complex features, which are useful for experts, out front. If others use a simpler interface, recommending them here is probably helpful. I tried to learn WinZip as a computer newbie. I used the help files and a comprehensive tutorial, and got completely lost. There were a lot of concepts the less experienced user(me), could not handle. I didn't want to learn about archives, I wanted the darned file smaller. Then a friend told me the simple answer to my problems. 1-Ignore all that Help stuff. 2-Simply right-click on the object you want zipped and choose from the choices available. I don't have WinZip on my computer now so can't give exact instructions. 3-Just choose one of the WinZip options. Agree with the program(it's friendly but demands obedience) and continue till you have a zipped file beside your original one. 4-If this didn't work make another choice next time. It might take you 5 minutes to get it, tops. There aren't that many right-click choices. Opening Zipped Files-If you right-click on an object that is already zipped, you get the choices to open it. Choose the option to open in a folder of the same name, or already have the file in a folder by itself. Otherwise you will mix the unzipped files with unrelated files, disturbing your bliss and that of others who don't like screamed swear words.(Programs can have zillions, figuratively speaking, of files in the zip.) All the zip programs I've used have had this right-click context menu, so I think my suggestion will work for just about any zip program out there. David --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Which file compression program is best/free?
    2. Lance
    3. Yes, PKZip has been around for a very long time (1986). Early versions of PAF used it as part of the setup routine. However, I believe PKZip and WinZip have always been produced by different companies. They are both still available from those companies: http://www.pkware.com/ http://www.winzip.com Lance -----Original Message----- From: Ken Quinn [mailto:director@montrealirishparade.com] Sent: Sunday, 22 August 2004 06:45 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Which file compression program is best/free? I've been using WinZip since before there was a Windows version. Prior to the Windows it was called PKZIP. I've never had a problem with it and continue to use it. Can we actually say which file compression software is "best"? I don't think so. We all have our own opinions on the subject, as we have seen the last few days. Regards, Ken Quinn --- avast! 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Searching for a word in E-mail Message
    2. Lance
    3. You have discovered an often unused feature available in many programs, Jane. If you look carefully at the toolbar on many screens you will see that some of the items have one of the letters in their name unlined - "F" in File; "E" in Edit; "V" in View; "O" in Format; "W" in Windows, etc. Just by pressing the ALT key and any one of those underlined letters will activate the corresponding action the name designates and open the context menu. Then in the context menu you will see there are more unlined letters. So by pressing, say ALT-T-O, it will open the Tools context menu and then open the Options menu within Tools. Many people become quite adept at using keystrokes rather then the mouse and these shortcuts are quick and easy to memorise. Similarly the WIN key in association with various keys can perform many functions. I am not an expert but I understand that a HD should have more than 13% free space for optimum operation. The operating system uses the HD to store less frequently used temporary files like census images when the RAM starts getting full. You should get a second HD. Preferably you should make it your C drive as the new HD will probably be larger and faster that your present one. The procedure to do the move was on this list or in a recent issue of PCWorld. bob gillis

Phone company will be hard to convince and threaten high service call if problem turns out to be inside you house, unless you have in-house coverage. 3. I think some of it depends of where you live, and what phone service your ISP has or which service you use, or maybe which service payment plan you are using with your ISP. and maybe how many modems the ISP has, in my small town of 3200 people, I don't think there is one *ISP in this* town, while there are several in the college town 10 miles away.We are in a rural area of Texas, My ISP does drop me off,at times, and some times it get very annoying, to say the least. But, I use them because they have been here longer than most of the others, and I believe they are the most knowledgeable of the bunch.; they have a payment plan for Seniors, which I am,and they are pleasant to work with. They now are offering DSL, but I don't know that I will change over, as one person stated on this list, I might not have the brass, since we are living on a pension, and it just stretches so far. 1. ZipZap- Zipping for the Relatively Inexperienced

    3. I'm not sure WinZip or any of the other Zip programs suck. 3. I have Winzip and I have do trouble with it, when I have to zip a file it puts it in the Winzip folders then in a file zipped and a file for unzipped all I do then is move the opened to the folder I want to put it in... I do not use that often and maybe I'm just lucky like most on the list I'm only a computer and software novice...
