Shareware is usually safe, but as with anything, it depends on where you're getting it from. There are a ton of sites out there that offer free screen savers as part of their Web site. You can find anything from seascapes to mountains, wildlife (the kind in the woods and the kind in the city) and babies. Also, if you have XP, it's an easy matter to download photos, put them into a folder and use that as a screensaver. I find my kids often sitting in front of the computer talking about the pictures that flash across. Pat, >What's the meaning of shareware? Can you download several to a folder? Is >it safe? I have a awful blue on my computer and a fish scene that has got to >go. Shareware is a try-before-you-buy type of program. Usually with features disabled or a time limit as to how long you can use it before it expires. You are free to pass the program on to others (in the unregistered version), hence the name shareware. Once the program is registered, you may not legally pass it to someone else. Art
Hello I am new to the list. I am running Windows 2000 and Microsoft Outlook 2002. Since updating my computer from Windows 98 I have a problem sending emails with large attachments. The email appears to remain in the "Outbox" and never make it to the "Sent" box. It actually does go though! I unfortunately sent someone 27 copies of the same email and attachment :-(( The message I get is Error 0x8004210B Operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending SMTP Server. I don't think it is a problem with my ISP. I did email them (Hotkey that is), but as usual they did not respond. I am not sure what to do next. Kind regards and thank you Jill Riches Strathalbyn South Australia
Pat, Static on the phone line (the type you may not be able to hear) will cause your dial-up connection to drop. Most phone companies today are going digital which lessens the chance of static. Hope the new number is of some help! BTW > A little connection program WILL help even if it turns out to be the phone line! Pat, no book will tell you what is necessary in your Task Bar (on the left hand end), simply because every one's needs are different. Any items you place in your Task Bar (at the left hand end) are just shortcuts to the programs so they do not impact in any significant way on the running of your computer. The icons on the right hand end (near the clock) however, are programs you have running at start-up and are the ones to look at if you want to conserve your computer's resources. Many will be essential, but you may have some that really don't need to be active all the time. Again, that is for you to decide as your needs may be different to anyone else. The icons in the middle represent the programs you have currently started running. They will disappear when you close the program down. Just as a point of interest, I have no icons on the left hand of my Task Bar. I use other methods of accessing programs without the need for icons there or on the Desktop. One of these is a program called Command Creator which utilises the WIN key and the RUN command: http://www.jiisoft.com/ Lance -----Original Message----- From: pat nix [mailto:pnix@accessatc.net] Sent: Monday, 23 August 2004 10:40 AM To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Task bar What is necessary in your task bar? Walt, you are correct. XP will continue downloading where it left off when disconnected even if you are disconnected many times. Hi John > I have been put on to a regular computer tips column, called BootCamp on Tuesdays in the UK Daily Telegraph. It is also archived and there are over 300 articles on www.telegraph.co.uk/bootarc Registration is the usual complex repetitive business but well worth it. That sounds a bit like "Ask Jack", the Jack Schofield computer column which appears in "The Guardian" each Thursday here in the UK. Again, it is archived, but there's no need to register to use it. Many of the queries are similar to those raised on this list. Go to :- http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/askjack/story/0,,1285512,00.html Best wishes. Artor anyone else: Every once in a while my dial up scree pops up so did as you said and went to tools, accounts, mail and my server is the only one listed; however, if I clicked on "all", I have several listed with 'directory service'. What are these possibly and can I delete them, am running Windows XP home version. Almost deleted them off and decided maybe I shouldn't until I knew what they were. Thanks, Lee Ripperger
Dear Lance, I have done as you suggested and wish to thank you very much. Marie

It is called the "tray". These are items that are running in the background and usually do not have much effect on system performance. The items on the desktop are shortcuts to programs. They are not running. Their purpose is just for quick access to frequently used programs. They allow you to start a program without having to go into the Start > Program routine all the time.
