Hi Ken > In my opinion screensavers are superfluous. I broadly agree with that sentiment. And two other points :- 1. a regular issue on this list is one of system resources, memory etc. It is my understanding that having a screensaver enabled does, in itself, use up some of those valuable resources of a PC. 2. on some modern PCs, a screensaver is a no-no, as they are not compatible with "sleep" or "power-down" settings. My PC hibernates after a short period of inactivity, and springs back into life when it is touched. A screensaver would upset this routine. The original reason for screensavers was to prevent very old screens getting a still image burned into them. That isn't really an issue now, and screensavers have become something of a toy or a visually appealing add-on. It's fine to use them if you like that sort of thing, but as I've indicated, there is a small price to pay. Best wishes. Pat, I think Alfred answered the question. I have chosen the "none" for my wallpaper. It's a plain medium green. Are you previewing them?? I just rechecked and found Mystery, Travel, Jungle and a few more nice looking ones for a screensaver. Hi folks, I'm trying to download images of pages from the Ancestry.com site of the "Devon History, Gazeteer and Directory". On screen they're very clear and you can enlarge them considerably - obviously very high resolution scans. However, when I download them they lose resolution and seem to be fairly small files - about 105kb for a full page image. They're jpeg files. Another issue I have is that my son has loaded Quick Time and it's hijacking all my image files. I have to consciously go to another graphics program in order to open them and have some flexibility in how I manipulate them. Any suggestions? Cheers, Robyn
Maureen, where are they? all I can find are blocks or buttons or these fish ect. My main computer runs XP, but I still also use my older Win 95 machine. On the Win 95 (and I'm sure 98 would be the same), to change backgrounds and screen-savers, first right-click your mouse anywhere on the desktop, then select Properties from the menu that appears. Now you have a choice of Background, Screensaver, Appearance, and Settings. Click on the Background tab and select whatever appeals to you from the choices. On my 95, I use "none" for the pattern and "clouds" for the Wallpaper. To change screen-savers, click on the Screen Saver tab and choose from the selections. As was mentioned by someone else, if you have XP, you can have a photo slide show as your screen-saver. I have mine set to display pictures from my ancestors folder, so my screen-saver reminds me of genealogy tasks I want to pursue when I start seeing my ancestors faces on the screen. Fran
did I understand that you were back to Windows 98? If so, Right click on any blank area of the desktop, choose properties, then choose the screen Saver tab, use the dropdown arrow to select another one, or NONE. OK your way out of it and that should be it. Sorry to alarm you, I have seen a fish screensaver offered in a spam note several times and thought that was what you had. PC World's site should be safe. Thanks so much Art. I followed your instructions, but didn't manage to free up enough space to keep everything running very well yet. I was wondering....My hard drive crashed this past summer, and we took it to the shop where they saved all my old info, then partitioned my hard drive and installed Windows XP for me. Might it be possible that my second memory card is no longer "hooked up"? Or is it possible that all my old stuff is still on one memory card while I am using the other one? Can they work separately, or do they automatically work together? Sorry to be such a pain, but I still don't understand how memory, ram, hard drive, etc. works in my computer. The partition that is taking the place of a usual C drive may be less or more than half of the whole drive that you have. Depends on how it was partitioned. Thus you Could be working with much less than your full hard disk. Check your memory and compare with the whole disk. What's the meaning of shareware? Can you download several to a folder? Is it safe? I have a awful blue on my computer and a fish scene that has got to go. Thanks Pat
Shareware is a term for applications available on a trial basis, usually but not always on the Internet. For example, the application I use to manage my genealogy database is Brother's Keeper. BK is shareware. I tried it. I liked it. I registered with the author. A site you might wish to visit as www.tucows.com. It has a lot of shareware on the site. In my opinion screensavers are superfluous. regards, Ken ----- Original Message ----- From: "pat nix" <pnix@accessatc.net> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 7:34 PM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Screen Savers > What's the meaning of shareware? Share-ware is usually a program that you download or get on some sort of demo disk that you are free to use for a limited amount of time, but you are then expected to pay a small fee if you want to continue to use it. I certainly would not reccomend that anyone download any shareware orfreeware (no fee - ever) from a spam email. I have seen several copies of something about a fishy screen saver. I understand that screensavers can be Trojan Horses, Worms, spyware or just plain Viruses. I do not know if this one is bad, but I wouldn't trust anything that I get from a spam message. As the saying goes, "Be careful out there!" Alfred D.
