Thanks for the info but I will NEVER change. I have no reason to.......never a virus or worm in all my years on the computer. I keep my anti-virus protection up to date on a daily basis (which means several times a days somedays). I am already aware of the problems you mentioned, but it's good to know you're concerned. Opera is highly rated, both for ease of use and speed. Mozilla recently had a small security problem which (unlike IE) was promptly responded to and fixed. Most writers (of computer columns and newsletters) recommend this practice and I feel it is sound advice to follow. I have both Opera and Mozilla installed. Opera is the one I use most of the time. Mozilla I use for testing sites my son creates in his profession. But don't take my word for it. To see how much RAM is installed, go to Start > right click on My Computer. Select Properties. On the general tab, it will state how much is installed. Hope this answers your question! Art
Greetings: I have been lurking for some time and noticed remark by Janet regarding memory. I am an old man with limited computer knowledge and I found that the well known site "How Stuff Works" is quite educational. This URL will connect to the article on How Computer Memory Works: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/computer-memory.htm I have no interest in promoting the website and I hope this is not considered off subject. Thought it might be helpful. Thomas

David , Thank you for your help re making Opera my default browser . Instructions carried out with success . Lucy
Hello , Is there a kind soul out there that can tell me how to make the Opera browser my default browser . I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox and downloaded the upgrade of Opera . I have Windows 2000 on my computer Please , I need help Thanking you in anticipation Lucy
Arthur, >I have recently purchased for my grand daughter, >a Pc fitted with windows 98se >& took note that there is RUNDLL in the start menu >I have never seen this before how can I remove it. >as I have to go through the Ctrl Alt Delete every time I >wish it install or run anything? RUNDLL and RUNDLL32 are necessary Windows 98 system files. They allow programs to "call" (access) other files known as DLL's. You DO NOT want to remove these files! Art
Hi Jan, Thanks for this info............... However, it seems that you have had better luck than me because when I try this hyperlink, things start to happen, a pale blue screen appears, a download starts, according to the box at the bottom of the screen, then it just sits there forever, in a sort of state of suspended animation! Still, I'll keep trying, or wait for another message to come from them. Your help is appreciated. Mal. I did that once a long time ago (when I was a newbie) and had a very difficult time getting WIndows back. In the bargain I didn't like Opera at all. Morning, All, (or evening!) Since the auto-install of SP2 (?) I have an odd message at the bottom of the screen when I am in OE6 email mode, NOT FOUND The requested url/oe5/connect was not found on this server As my server is the French Wanadoo and the message is in English they 'deny all knowledge'. Any ideas, the experts? It appears to have no impact on running OE or IE (or anything!). Bob Platten, Paris
Lisa, Sorry for the delay in answering. >You mentioned in your response to my question about memory problems that > >"NOTE: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU CHOSE TO STOP FROM STARTING. Many of those are >system files that need to be running!" > >Can you give me some tips to know what kinds of things are important? This depends on the configuration of your systems. Are two or more computers networked together? Does the computer have an Internet connection? Does the system have an Anti-Virus program? Does it have a firewall? Does it have pop-up blockers? What type of connection does it have? All these questions and more need to be answered. >I know systray is important on my 98 machine. What others? Systray and Explorer should never be shut down on a Win98 computer. Those are the two main ones that need to be kept running. Other things depend on the answers to the above questions. >What should I definitely keep on my xp machine? XP is a whole different story. It requires many tasks to be running in the background. I suggest you take a look at the Task List Programs page here: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm It lists background tasks in alphabetical order and you can read about any you don't know of. >Where can I find out such trivia? Therefore, I would suspect that OE is trying to open a web page included in an email that you have received. Most likely SPAM. It could also be some type of malware. I suggest you check you mailboxes and run Ad-Aware and SpyBot to see if those help the problem. Art
Thanks Art, will do. Peter
Just thought before I drove everyone mad that I would let you know I have sorted out my GEDCOM transfer problem. I originally saved direct to disc which seems to have been my major mistake. I redid the whole process saving first to desktop then again to floppie and it has gone onto RootsMagic like, well, magic! Thanks to all who have read my tales of woe, Heather
I am in a muddle again. I have converted my data in the UFT Programme on my laptop to GEDCOM to transfer to RootsMagic which has installed with no obvious problems on my new computer. GEDCOM was saved to 3 floppies which appear to have labelled themselves as GED, GO0 and GO1. RootsMagic recognises GED and asks for next disc but on reaching the stage of 'Begin import' nothing happens whatsoever. I have interrogated Discs GO0 and GO1 and they show 709 KB and 936 KB of data respectively. I wonder if the error is in the second disc's labelling but can I/should I change it at this stage. What am I doing wrong? Please keep any replies simple. Thanks, Heather
