Then it would be a time saver to only have to delete the list address. As it is now, the person has to go through many steps to reply off-list and many people don't know how to do this. Thanks for reading this and your consideration of this matter. Art

I find excel cumbersome and slow so I'd prefer not to use it. I've tried writing access program with a little success but even this is not really what I want. I'd like a fully indexable search engine I guess. Joy

    1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Word 97 Convert to Works???
    2. Lance
    3. Shirley, MS Works can import MS Word 97 ".doc" files. To import the ".doc" file (into Works 4.5 and I presume other versions): 1. Click the EXISTING DOCUMENTS tab on the Works Task Launcher. 2. Click OPEN A DOCUMENT NOT LISTED HERE. 3. The OPEN DIALOG box appears. 4. From the LOOK IN drop down list, select the location where you stored the ".doc" file. 5. Works looks for a Works file so you may not immediately see the file you want to import. 6. Click the down-arrow next to the FILES OF TYPE box and select the appropriate file format. 7. Select the file you want to import (the ".doc" one) 8. Click OPEN. Once the file opens you can format it using Works tools and save it. 3. I would suggest that you get a regular genealogy program and enter the data into it. Most will now create a website for you to burn onto a disk. PAF and the first step of Legacy are free, it money is tight. RootsMagic would be my choice if you have thirty dollars to spend. (the book, at an additional $10 would probably be worth it to a first time user.) http://www.rootsmagic.com/ -- RootsMagic -- Click on "Buy it" -- there is also a free demo download, but limited to entering 50 people.. http://www.familysearch.org/ -- PAF -- Click on "Order/download products." http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ -- Legacy -- Click on "Download" for the standard edition You will have to type the information into the program in any case. 3. Hi All, At this time, there have been 481 messages posted to the GEN-COMP-TIPS list - which is about 150 more messages than the previous month with the "most posts" according to the archives. With that much traffic on the list, it is important that we remember a few things: 1) Stay on topic. I don't want to get into a debate about what"on topic" is. Generally speaking, if it is computer related and can be interpreted to be used for genealogy purposes it is on topic. 2) Ensure the subject line of your message is topical. With so many messages coming through, it's important to grab your readership's attention. I'm sure you'll agree a subject line such as Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Re: GEN-COMP-TIPS-D Digest V04 #259 is completely useless. 3) Only quote as much of the message you are replying to so as to remind your readership about what you are referring to. There's no need to quote an entire message or, even worse, an entire DIGEST. 4) If at all possible, if you are thanking someone for their assistance please send the thanks privately to their e-mail address. It is important to thank the people who assist us but not necessary to send to the entire list. As of this morning there are 249 subscribers to the list and 181 subscribers to the digest. Regards, Ken Quinn, List Admin

    1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] OPERA BROWSER
    2. Lance
    3. Maureen, while security concerns exist about IE, it is a good practice to use an alternative browser which is not as susceptible to security problems. Opera is highly rated, both for ease of use and speed. Mozilla recently had a small security problem which (unlike IE) was promptly responded to and fixed. Most writers (of computer columns and newsletters) recommend this practice and I feel it is sound advice to follow. I have both Opera and Mozilla installed. Opera is the one I use most of the time. Mozilla I use for testing sites my son creates in his profession. But don't take my word for it. Read through these sites and see what they have to say: http://tinyurl.com/2qq3u http://www.smarthouse.com.au/ArticlesByTopic/HomeSystems/Security/1631 http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2004Jun/sec20040630025811.htm http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=239278 http://www.technewsworld.com/story/32808.html There should be enough information there to convince most of the wisdom of changing. 3. First, I would like to thank everyone who tried to help me understand the difference between the different types of memory on a computer's system. It is now much clearer to me what I am dealing with here. I still would like to get an answer to the question I asked earlier, though, if someone wouldn't mind. The question is: I bought and installed a second memory card for my computer a year ago. This summer the system crashed. The people in the shop reformatted and installed Windows XP home edition. Does my computer automatically "read" both the old memory card that originally came installed as well as the new one? Is it possible that I am only getting use out of one of the memory cards? Again, I really appreciate all the great information I have received thus far.
