    3. Hi Art, I hope I haven't missed anything here, but is there a reason you buy the CD rather than downloading the update from Microsoft's website? I have always just downloaded them for free, then figured if I ever needed them again, I could just download them once again. Is my thinking flawed? 3. Before doing so make sure you have a good popup stopper or you will be bombarded with them at some of the "free" clip art sites. Also be aware that some of popups will try and take you to adult materials. Just take this from someone who's "been there." dolphin213 wrote on 9/1/2004, 7:50 PM: > > Janet, > > If you do a 'google search' on "clip art & free", you will find 3,620,000 > results that you can download from. I'm sure in that many results, you'll find something to your liking better than what is offered from the Microsoft collection. 3. Yes Terry this appears to be a big problem, I have all my photo's & family history stored on CD. & had hoped it would be available for my grandchildren, & their children, but it looks like this is not the case. & who's to know, that in 20 years time, there will be anything to read them? (WHAT DO WE STORE OUR GOODIES ON.)??? I took note that 50% of my slides had degenerated over the last 30 odd years, to a standard that would take to much time to recover. thank the lord I had taken some black & white photo's as well! then we come to all those super 8 movies what do we do with them? But what ever it is we should do it in the next few years. ever tried to get a spare for that old projector? They say even the modern paper & ink has only a life of 10 years. & our generation thinks it is so clever. I think we should take a few tips from our ancestors don't you? 3. That sounds like a problem with file association. The extension on these files is set to be opened with Nero, but the file isn't what Nero expects, so it can't do anything with them. Changing the file association depends on your operating system. You may be able to: Click once on the icon to highlight it, hold down the shift key while Right clicking on the icon to bring up a dropdown menu, Choose "Open With" (if it's there) Find the program that you want to open this type of file and check the box before "Always use this one" (or whatever it says.) If you do not find the "Open With" choice in the dropdown menu, you will have to check your Windows Help menu under "Extension" and, in Windows 98 I see the title: "To change which program starts when you open a file " ====== I am only guessing, but the resource file fiewer should be something you get with, or as a supliment to the census disks. If you can get the file extension to be associated with that, you should be in business. Alfred D. 3. I would not trust magnetic tape as far/long as I would a CD-R. That is similar to the tapes that the old tape recorders use. They seem to be quite particular how they are stored. Alfred D. 3. G'Day Charles. This would all depend of whether you wish the recipient to print it or just look at it? e.g. your screen can only see 75p per inch so if it was the latter a photo 6"x4"x75p would be sufficient, however if you wish them to print it, a good size would be 5"x3.5"x300p. The longevity of CD-R, CD-RW and DVD issue has been a matter of debate since their introduction. There are many factors that come into play as to how long the data will last. Such as, storage conditions, heat, cold, humidity, sunlight and even handling. Another important factor is the manufacturing. (Usually those made in Taiwan are considered better than those made in Japan. Read the small print on the label! ) The best advice is to buy a good quality CD, handle it properly and store it under the recommend conditions (ie keep it at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and store it laying flat (NOT on edge)). If the above is followed, it should last a lifetime or more. Hope this helps. Art

Recordable DVDs have the same problem and "such views are echoed by the National Archives at Kew", according to the article. I usually use "reply" when I wish to thank someone and "reply all" when starting or contributing to a thread. There are several very knowlegeable contributors on this list, and I am sure they will continue to reply to the list and share their knowledge with mere mortals such as myself. Your question is really difficult to answer. There really is no "ideal size". Generally, you would want a photo to be less than a MB in size. Different formats of a graphic file (which a photo is) would cause the file to be different sizes. So it would depend on the format used. The second part of your question is a little easier to answer. If it is to small, then the recipient must use a graphic program to zoom in on the picture to be able to see it. As a photo is enlarged, distortion is easier to see and the picture starts to show blocks. Hope this helps. If there are more than one, it is necessary in Win98 to follow each through to see where your boxes are. If this happens in the recipient machine, create an odd named box and see where a search finds it! This did not work for me the first time as it refused to copy folders.dbx. There was no clue on Lances InsideOE site, so I just did it again and it worked. Logical things, computers!
