Hi Robin > My computer screen, after the screensaver kicks in, goes blank after a short while and i have great difficulty in getting it to come back on. I have to switch the screen on and off, sometimes several times, which does not always work, for it to come back on. The little light on the front of the monitor shows amber but when i press the mouse/space bar it turns green as normal. > My question is, Is it time for a new screen or is there any tweaks i can do to stop this happening. What make are your PC and monitor, and how old are they ? My two year old TFT flatscreen and PC don't really like screensavers. This is because the screensaver plays havoc with the powersaver feature, which sees the PC and monitor hibernate after a period of inactivity. I simply switched the screensaver off, and now everything works fine ! Best wishes. Could the resident Computer Experts give me some advice please?? My computer screen, after the screensaver kicks in, goes blank after a short while and i have great difficulty in getting it to come back on. I have to switch the screen on and off, sometimes several times, which does not always work, for it to come back on. The little light on the front of the monitor shows amber but when i press the mouse/space bar it turns green as normal. My question is, Is it time for a new screen or is there any tweaks i can do to stop this happening. Robin
This is exactly what is happening to my computer. When I try to find a restore point earlier than August 28th 2004 it will not show any earlier calendar month than August. Coincidentally, or is it?, August 28th is exactly 2 years after I bought the machine on which I have XP Pro. It has created a new restore point every day since end of August and with the slider set to max there should be plenty of storage available. Is it possible to clear all restore point data stored before a give date. Accompanying this problem I find that the CD burner fan starts and runs for 10 or 15 seconds when I boot up. This stops immediately if I open the CD thingo.(forgotten the name). I noticed recently that while on line, update stuff, presumably SP2, was being downloaded, for long periods, but don't know if it has been installed. An old Win98 machine, (99 vintage 400) I have won't boot at all unless the CD thingo is open! I'm tempted to save all my data and start again with a new machine. I had similar problems until my ISP suggested that I should reduce my reliance on ZA, which he said, among other things, is not the world's best firewall. I installed Norton, which costs something every year, but has kept me free of firewall problems. I highly recommend it! Are you trying to boot into DOS? What keyword are you talking about? What do you mean by a clear desktop icon? Keep in mind that DOS and Windows XP are two completely different operating systems. Win95 and Win98 were based on DOS, XP is not. While most DOS programs will work under XP, there are some that will not. I need more information as to what exactly you are trying to do in order for me to help you. Art
Thanks Art, I couldn't see any of my programs in the list with problems. With dial up I am connected for 4 hour blocks on most nights. Is there a way I can find out if XP2 is still downloading? There is no %progress thing happening that I can see. I just can't remember which day it started but it seems like nearly a week ago. The SP2 may not have fully downloaded and that is why the install box hasn't shown itself. Wait awhile until it does come up before attempting to install it. With a dial-up connection MS has stated that it may take several days for the download to complete as it can only download when you are connected. There are many things that have been changed/updated with the SP2. The security is just one feature mentioned as that is the one that seems to be giving people the problems. I should mention that problems are only encountered by a small percentage (15% or less) of those that have installed the update. I have been using SP2 without any problems. You just have to be careful when the system reboots to tell it what to do concerning the firewall, virus program and updates. Learn to use the new Security Center in the method that is best for you. Check the web site here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242 and see if you are running any of the problem programs (and versions) listed. If you are not, you shouldn't have any problems. I'm glad to hear you have ordered the CD. Since it is free, it doesn't hurt to have it. You never can tell when a need may arise! Hope this helps. Adelaide, 4th September 2004 Dear List, I have been a bit off colour so am behind with my emails, but have found all the comments interesting. I do keep written copies of my data, but my real problem is that my Grandmother left quite a few certificates, my Grandfather's paybook from WW1(with a letter from his CO when he was in Hospital), and some other papers. She left them loose in the bottom of her wardrobe and they were in very poor condition indeed. Some years ago I had my Gt. Grandparents Wedding Certificate restored and sealed, the glass photograph with it remounted; the cost even then was $450. I could not afford to have any more treated, and scanned to put on CD with my records the other papers she left, in case of further deterioraton. It is possible that someday someone in the family will show interest, but a method of saving data that does not take up a lot of space is more likely to survive until then. I was disappointed that Alfred considers magnetic tape to be a poor choice. I assumed the National Archives would know what they were about. Regards, Terry
I have had my Dell Computer 2 years the early part of August. Walt Conner >, August 28th is exactly 2 years after I bought the machine on which I have XP Pro. It has created a new >restore point every day since end of August
Hi, I've read with interest the posting about the expanding use of digital cameras for genealogical research. I am planning a research trip next month and very much want to use a camera to record information. I know nothing about digitals so I spent a good part of the day yesterday reviewing archives to collect brands mentioned and compile a list of features needed. I visited a camera store today and tried out several models but none were capable of capturing text. My wish list includes: 3.2 megapixels, optical zoom (3x), picture mode vs text mode, macro capabilities, glass lens (good rating). Several on this list have written about their successful use of digitals and I would like to hear what brand/models they used (pros/cons) and would appreciate any guidance about features. TIA, dj
Hi, I have a Sony FD Mavica 2.0 Mega Pixels that will store pictures on a memory stick or 1.44MB floppy disks. It has 6X Precision Digital Zoom. It has been great for what I have tried it on. I've photographed headstones with excellent results. I've photographed sections of large maps with great results and I've shot papers (typed paper documents) with great results. It can be uploaded directly to my computer via USB or via floppy disk. It can capture text, as mentioned. I have a minor, but irritating, problem which I hope our experts can solve for me. I have a desktop running Windows98 + Outlook Express, I have a laptop running WindowsXP + Outlook Express, both OE same edition. I subscribe to many Rootsweb lists, including this one, in Digest mode. My desktop shows the contents of the Digest folder as Summary>then the messages in date/time order earliest first. My laptop does exactly the reverse, the Digest folder shows the messages in date/time order with most recent first and finally the summary. How can I change the laptop WindowsXP folder display to the logical way that the desktop displays the folder. I am presently on vacation in Southern France with the laptop and would welcome your advice. Michael
I am having problems over very simple things now that I have XP. Most of my genealogy programmes are good old DOS. I have found out how to make a startup sisc, but it gets me into A:\ and cannot find any other drive - let alone C:\ The in-computer imformation needs you to type in the key word. It was Startup rather than MSDOS or DOS. I cannot find a clear desktop icon. I tries looking under both desktop and clear Oh! for Windows 95, 98 or even good old DOS! John Dowding|
Hello - I do hope someone can help me. I wanted to transfer my genealogy e-mail from OUTLOOK EXPRESS to OUTLOOK - specifically for Outlooks use of a great calendar - which will help me so much. However - when I transferred or Exported information and try to use OUTLOOK by hitting the SEND/RECEIVE button - I get an error message that says "The operation failed. An Object cannot be found". I tried reinstalling the CD...but still get the same error message. I'm using XP Office and run on Windows XP. Any suggestions! Thanks. ~Kathy
Hello Art, A few moments ago, I just finished an email to you to say that I had concluded that Norton was at fault and that I was about to re-enable it and try switching off the Auto Live Update but when I tried to send the email I discovered that my connection had failed yet again so it seems that Norton is not at fault after all - back to the drawing board!! You may have seen a message to me on the list from Irene saying that she had a similar problem and contacted D-Link who make the modem and they talked her through some modifications by phone that seemed to fix the problem. I am going to try that next unless you have any other ideas? Martyn
>Is your computer set to the maximum disk space for recording restore points? > To turn on System Restore do the following. This is weird. The System Restore Off Box is unchecked and I have not bothered it. The Disk Space to Use is set at Max. (??) I just checked and now it has saved a Restore point the last 3 days in a row! I had checked 2 - 3 times in the last 2 weeks, first time I wanted to use it, and there was no Restore point saved the entire month. I just checked, I guess it had to be over 3 days ago, and there was still none. Seems like it had been saving one every 5 - 7 days before. Thanks to all but still don't know what is going on, Walt Conner
Art, > OK. Let us know tomorrow of how it is doing! After disabling Norton yesterday, I stayed on line for about 6 hours with no further problem and have been on again this morning for about 2 hours without interruption - so...... it seems to me that we have isolated the cause of the problem to Norton. You have probably seen the correspondence between Kathy and myself and after a few more hours if I get no drop outs I am going to follow her suggestion and re-enable Norton and switch off the Auto Live Update feature and see if I still stay connected. What do you think?
