    1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Download to CD RW
    2. Burning to a CD direct from the net? That virtually guarantees a bad CD burn. When the CD burner is writing to a disk, the data has to be available when it is writing. Downloading data from the net for a CD takes much more time than making the data available from a hard drive. If the data hasn't arrived from the net yet when the CD wants to write, you've got a "data hole" on your burning CD and automatically have a bad CD. So, always download your data from the net first to your hard drive, and then burn your CD from the data on the hard drive. You say you're trying to write directly to your CD from the net, but your puter is instead writing to your hard drive first and then burning the data to the CD. Sounds like a smart computer. :) Woody ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<>~~~~~~~~~~~~ jjc@gvtc.com writes: I am trying to download a file from the Internet and save on my CD RW. 3. When I download I always have to download it to C Drive and then use the cd burning software to transfer the download to the disk. After that you can delete the file off C Drive. 3. I do believe that you SHOULD save a download to your hard drive, then copy it to the CD. I know I would ruin a lot of CDs if I could burn while downloading. The download is much slower than the CD will burn and that throws the process off enough that the CD burn is messed up enough that it is no good. At least, I remember something like that in the early days of burning CDs, "Make sure that your hard drive can keep up with your CD burner" was one of the first warnings. Alfred D. 3. I consider myself to be something of an expert - however my new cordless keyboard and mouse had me stumped for about three days. I was sure I had read all the instructions - but just couldn't get them to work. Eventually I realised I hadn't primed the receiver unit by pressing the button to determine the frequencies used. Some possible pointers to your problem - Are both the mouse and keyboard using the same setting ( I think they should be) Have you setup the mouse, keyboard and receiver unit to all work on the same frequency? There is possibly a small recessed button on each of them which you are required to press Malcolm Hills http://www.county-surnames.co.uk/index.php http://www.monumental-inscriptions.co.uk/index.php -----Original Message----- From: Eunice Cubbage [mailto:eunice@cubbage.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: 08 September 2004 00:22 To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Wireless Mouse problem Hi ! 1. Re: Digital Cameras in Genealogical Research
    2. Mary Hodges
    3. I have used 3 Sony Cameras for capturing my library research results, using floppies, mini- cds and memory sticks. There are pros and con for any camera, but I have 3 main reasons to keep on using a camera for my genealogy searching. I have many library copies made of microfilmed records that have faded over time so I try to always take digital images of most images and then make paper of just those special ones. I may over-do things, but the very special ones I then take home and scan just to be sure I have that key piece of research. #2 relates to the one day I had access to the images of my entire 1848 family's passenger list. It was only in Ohio, but the humidity was so high that not a single printer would work in the library. Handy camera to the rescue, and fortunately I was using the camera with mini-CD so I had plenty of room for images of the entire passenger list. #3 depends on the policy of the library, but frequently I have used the camera on fragile documents when the staff would not allow then to be put on the copy machine. A tripod is useful as is a camera with a neck strap. My latest Sony P100 lacks one and I still have not found a good way to steady this camera without a tripod. You are on the right track and should be able to get help whereas 5 years ago people just stared as if to say I was crazy to ask such a non-professional question. Please do ask about the archives' policies however. Some are still working in the dark ages when it comes to using digital cameras. MHodges mhodges@mac.com

    3. Good Morning, I have a stubborn Excel file stored on a floppy disk. It did open and work but now I get a message that says I can no longer access it. I am able to access another file on the same floppy though. The exact message I get when trying to open the file says: "(file) cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding." Also, the floppy continues to cycle on and off as long as I leave it in the computer. It never did that before. And like I said, there is another file on this floppy that I am able to access. I did not make the inaccessible file a read-only file. I'm trying to do this on a laptop that has Windows 98 for its operating system. I have a hard copy of these extracted census records but is there any hope I can open that file again or is it lost forever and ever? Thank you for your help!
