    3. Art All very reassuring, thank you! I downloaded SP2 as soon as it was announced, but then waited a couple of weeks before installing it, to gauge what other users' reactions were. I found the forum on www.computeractive.co.uk to be very helpful with this and other issues. I've now installed SP2 and have had no problems (am I tempting fate when I say that?) I already had the Zone Alarm firewall, so disabled the Windows one, and run Norton AV as well. Those two, plus pop-up blockers, seem to be doing the business. I'm sure your advice is very sound - however people do it, a firewall and AV software are essential. If some of it costs, it's worth it for the security and the peace of mind. 2. Christine Gibbins
    3. I had to get out some files on the farm history I had written up c. 1987 to 1995 and was sad to find that all the ink on the pages had faded, this was done with an Epson LQ printer, can't remember the model number, so I now have to reprint them all, thank goodness they are still on the hard drive well I hope they are!!!!!! that will keep me busy this winter. The file is in a filing cabinet and not accessed very often. But what do I use, do I print then and then get them photo copied? This is rather serious for all ink jet printed paperwork, it will not store and I am wondering about all the legal papers we have to keep the pages will be blank, plus the stuff produced for deeds and wills, I doubt the ink will still be readable. 3. Janet, I think your fears and concerns about the SP2 update for XP are an issue for a lot of people. I have been running the SP2 since it's release without a problem. The added security features make it a MUST installation. Keep in mind that less then 15% of people are reporting problems. That means most people (85%) are not having any. 3. I wish to thank all who have responded with the great help regarding the Open Image problem that I was having. I finally found the problem. On my Server, I am on "Dial-Up" with the modem. I just upgraded to an Accelerator program with them, which has increased my speed considerably. I just happened to open the Program, and it had blocked all of the Images that I regularly surfed to, other than Ancestry.com. I have set up the areas that I want to open the images, and everything is working great. Again, Thank You! Janet P.S. I have been reading the concerns about the XP upgrade. I have received my CD, but have not downloaded. I'm really worried about doing it, because I do not want anything to interrupt my Genealogy.

    3. Hi Drake, What does '3 with threats' mean? Can you uninstall the programs you don't want by going to Control Program and then clicking on Add or Remove Programs? What am I missing in your query? Why is an installation process started when you want to delete a program? I think I"m missing something here. Marie -----Original Message----- From: Drake Porter [mailto:dodebi@juno.com] Sent: Sunday, September 12, 2004 8:22 AM To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Spyware and Adware To anyone who might be able to help How do I delete these programs? I have Norton and it is saying I have 3 with "threats". I have copied a paragraph per the problem from Symatech. Drake File names: SpywareNukerInstaller.exe When the installation process is started, SpywareNukerInstaller.exe attempts to connect to spywarenuker.com to download SpyNukerSetup.exe, which is another component of the setup program. This file is saved to C:\Program Files\Trek Blue. When the download is complete this file is executed. By default, the program installs itself to C:\Program Files\Trek Blue\Spyware Nuker, and then insert several files and subfolders in this folder. The program comes with a LSPFix executable that modifies Windows TCP/IP setup. As a result of this modification, you may loose network connectivity. Note: Removing this adware component from the system will likely cause the program that installed it to not function as intended. The uninstaller generally identifies the programs that will not work after uninstallation. Update the virus definitions. Uninstall Spyware Nuker using the Add/Remove Programs utility. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Adware.SpywareNuker. Delete the value that was added to the registry. For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions. 1. Updating the virus definitions Symantec Security Response fully tests all the virus definitions for quality assurance before they are posted to our servers. There are two ways to obtain the most recent virus definitions: Running LiveUpdate, which is the easiest way to obtain virus definitions: These virus definitions are posted to the LiveUpdate servers once each week (usually on Wednesdays), unless there is a major virus outbreak. To determine whether definitions for this threat are available by LiveUpdate, refer to the Virus Definitions (LiveUpdate). Downloading the definitions using the Intelligent Updater: The Intelligent Updater virus definitions are posted on U.S. business days (Monday through Friday). You should download the definitions from the Symantec Security Response Web site and manually install them. To determine whether definitions for this threat are available by the Intelligent Updater, refer to the Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater). The Intelligent Updater virus definitions are available: Read "How to update virus definition files using the Intelligent Updater" for detailed instructions. 2. Uninstalling the Adware Do one of the following: On the Windows 98 taskbar: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs. On the Windows Me taskbar: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs. If you do not see the Add/Remove Programs icon, click "...view all Control Panel options." On the Windows 2000 taskbar: By default, Windows 2000 is set up the same as Windows 98. In that case, follow the Windows 98 instructions. Otherwise, click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs. On the Windows XP taskbar: Click Start > Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add or Remove Programs. Click Spyware Nuker Note: You may need to use the scroll bar to view the whole list. Click Add/Remove, Change/Remove, or Remove (this varies with the operating system). Follow the prompts. ==== GEN-COMP-TIPS Mailing List ==== DO NOT open unexpected file attachments from people, even if you know them. Verify with the sender first. 3. I am the one who requested the help on firewalls. I have been using, as indicated, NortonAntivirsus 2002. Everyday as soon as I connected to the web I would check for an undate. So I was always up to speed there. Norton 2005 was installed yesterday. This morning as soon as I connected to web I received a message from Norton that an attempt to invade with a worm was detected and stopped. So, evidently I was a bit behind in security with Norton 2002 even with constant updates. Thought I would let everyone know. Thanks again for help. I have disabled Windows firewall and going with Norton firewall. Sue S.

    1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Norton AntiVirsus & Windows Firewall
    2. The general advise I've heard is that it is not good to have two firewalls going at the same time. I'd turn off the Windows firewall, if it has been turned on. Seems the Windows default is disabled, but the SP2 patch turns it on. When the Ancestry census pages come up, Norton should be asking you if you want it blocked or always allow. I think. Woody ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ sues@trib.com writes: I am not very computer literate and need some advice. I just finished removing Norton AntiVirsus 2002 and downloading and installing Norton AntiVirsus 2005. The recommendation with Norton AntiVirsus 2005 is that Windows Firewall be removed and Norton protection be used instead. My questions---Is that what someone with knowledge in this area would agree with and if that is done will the likelihood of being able to use census images from Ancestry.com be increased? Thank you.

    3. Sue, You can not remove the Windows firewall without removing SP2. You can however, turn it off. Start > Control Panel > Security Center. As to which one would be better to access Ancestry.com, I suggest you try them both and see which one offers the better performance. NOTE: Do not run both at the same time. They can and will conflict with each other. Art >I am not very computer literate and need some advice.
