    1. Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips] suggestions for keeping up with Passwords
    2. To keep up with subscriptions and passwords and programs downloaded with their passwords etc, I print the confirmations, write along the side of the page of paper in colored markers with the name of the list, program, subscription etc then file them in a file folder that goes in the front of my filing cabinet. My mind is just not into remembering things these days and this works really well if I don't remember. If the password isn't generated by the program and sent to me, I write the password and date I chose that password on the printed out sheet. I also keep these email confirmations in a folder in Outlook but should anything happen that did that file in, a hard copy is important. 3. Hi to all I am a Legacy user -- have been for years. My experience with downloading the program is that you have an option of having the installation done from the web which is the way I do it. BUT first, there is a little program (Legacy5Setup.exe) that you download wherever you want to put it on your system (I use My Documents). Once you have this program on your hard drive, you can run it but you must remain connected to the internet. What this does is activate the program such that you will have the rest of the program installed from the web. This can take a while, depending on the speed of your internet connection. It may prompt you for the password at that time (that has been my more recent experience) or you might be able to get the entire installation done and then, when you want to run the actual Legacy program, it will prompt you for the password. I hope that this is of some help. If not, please contact me at my e-mail address and I'll see if I can help you. Lucy > Anthony, you message is a little unclear. 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] attachments
    2. Lance
    3. Sandy, as you are using Outlook Express v.6, it could be that OE is removing the attachments from your email messages from the ENG-Manchester list. As a test, go to TOOLS|OPTIONS|SECURITY and remove the selection from the option in VIRUS PROTECTION that states in part "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened....", then see if the attachments come through. If that doesn't have any effect, replace the selection. The next remedy would be to subscribe to the LIST rather than the DIGEST version. That way you will get all of the messages direct, not as attachments. 1. RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] suggestions for keeping up with Passwords
    2. Lance
    3. Peggy, these two sites have good lessons on security (in two parts): http://tinyurl.com/4lewd http://tinyurl.com/6oor3 There is a handy free program created by Luke Murphey called Digital Identity. This provides a secure place to store all your passwords and other details about any particular site. This program is password protected and it uses a special encryption method. It also has a unique way of "storing" the program's password, too: http://lukemurphey.net/Password.htm One of its features is a password generator, allowing you to create a variety of randomly generated passwords. You can also use Quicky Password Generator, too: http://www.quickysoftware.com/ It is NOT a good idea to use the SAME password for a variety of sites - keep them different and change them frequently. By using the same password for a variety of sites you compromise your security. If a hacker manages to "crack" that password they will then have access to ALL the sites which you have used it for. If the password only applies to one site or program, it at least hampers their access to other places. Why make their task easy? It certainly is not a good idea to store emails with the logon passwords in folders in your mail program. They can be accessed by anyone (including staff at repair shops). Print them out and keep them in a separate folder or binder AWAY from your computer. If you do write down logon passwords in an index book also keep it in an area AWAY from your computer. Why? Well, it is an open temptation to any one to use your passwords if you are not around. It is also very handy for anyone who happens to break into your home. Not only can they steal your computer, they can take your handy book of passwords, too! Think of the havoc they could play with your financial records! (This happened to a work colleague of mine!). Hope this helps. If I was installing from the CD, I would shut down everything that is not necessary. Art

    3. Janet, There is no set answer for this question. It would depend on what parts of the SP you need, the speed of your CD player, the hard drive speed, and many other factors. If you need a time frame to work with, figure anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or a little more. On average, about 45 minutes. Keep in mind that the CD contains ALL updates to XP to the date of the CD. The CD contains 475 MB of data!
