I am interested in buying a 4 in 1 combination printer, scanner, copier and fax machine. I want it to do color pictures and be able to scan legal size documents, preferable on a flat bed rather than sheet fed. I will be using this for my genealogy work. If this is not the proper place to ask this question, could someone give me the proper newsgroup. Pat
Go to the Tools menu, click on Options, then the "Security" tab. Remove the checkmark from in front of "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." That line seems to stop you from opening ANY attachment from anyone. You still have to be careful and keep your anti virus program updated. Yes, Microsoft has a Web Site you can browse, check the Help menu. Alfred D. Sybil, just go to this site and you will see how to order a CD from Microsoft: http://tinyurl.com/6g675 It will take about four weeks to be delivered. You could also check current or recent copies of computer magazines available in stores - the ones that have free CD's on the cover. Some are now including the SP2 Pack on those CD's (Australian readers take note!). Lance LEGACY is now running well. My sincere thanks. Anthony
Hello Lance, Thank you for your advice I shall try your suggestion and hope that it works. If not as you say I shall have to get my mail in List form. I am new to Gen-Com-Tips and the attachments come through fine as do all my others so I am puzzled that MANCHESTER does not do the same. Thanks again for your time, Regards Sandy Australia
Lance, I ordered the CD online. It said something like allowing four to six weeks for delivery. So, when I got the CD, less than a week later, I thought it was just a card confirming the order. Since my only XP computer is a laptop, seldom on line, I haven't taken the time to back it all up and install it yet though, so I cannot comment on that. Alfred D. An excellent point Kerryn, and one that can be overcome by NOT using Internet Explorer. By switching to Mozilla/Firefox there is a feature called Password Manager. But, what about hackers who might "steal" the passwords from the browser? Well, Mozilla's programmers made it harder for them to steal passwords. In addition to your profile's path never being the same (this is why they added the "df745kdtk.slt" folder - it always has a different name, hence there's always a different path to your profile), Mozilla can also encrypt your stored information. While there is no such thing as perfect security, you just need to be a harder target than the average Internet Explorer user :-). Anthony, you should only have one file not "bits", unless you downloaded the various sections of the Geo Database Locator (very large downloads by the way). What I suggest you do is download the setup file again from: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacyDeluxe.asp This time however, save it to either your DESKTOP or create a special DOWNLOADS folder (the latter I recommend). A good rule of thumb with ANY download is TAKE CONTROL. That is YOU nominate WHERE it is to be saved, preferably into a DOWNLOADS folder. Don't just happily "click away" without taking note of just where the download is going. Otherwise you lose track of it, and, as you have found, you have to search for it. Once you have the fresh download, do a normal Windows install and you should be under way with one of the best programs available. I've been wondering whether its such a good idea to use the "remember password" option in windows as well. This would be open to hackers too? Kerryn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lance" <hty31b5@hotmail.com> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 16, 2004 11:59 AM Subject: RE: [Gen-Comp-Tips] suggestions for keeping up with Passwords Peggy, these two sites have good lessons on security (in two parts): http://tinyurl.com/4lewd http://tinyurl.com/6oor3 There is a handy free program created by Luke Murphey called Digital Identity. This provides a secure place to store all your passwords and other details about any particular site. This program is password protected and it uses a special encryption method. It also has a unique way of "storing" the program's password, too: http://lukemurphey.net/Password.htm One of its features is a password generator, allowing you to create a variety of randomly generated passwords. You can also use Quicky Password Generator, too: http://www.quickysoftware.com/ It is NOT a good idea to use the SAME password for a variety of sites - keep them different and change them frequently. By using the same password for a variety of sites you compromise your security. If a hacker manages to "crack" that password they will then have access to ALL the sites which you have used it for. If the password only applies to one site or program, it at least hampers their access to other places. Why make their task easy? It certainly is not a good idea to store emails with the logon passwords in folders in your mail program. They can be accessed by anyone (including staff at repair shops). Print them out and keep them in a separate folder or binder AWAY from your computer. If you do write down logon passwords in an index book also keep it in an area AWAY from your computer. Why? Well, it is an open temptation to any one to use your passwords if you are not around. It is also very handy for anyone who happens to break into your home. Not only can they steal your computer, they can take your handy book of passwords, too! Think of the havoc they could play with your financial records! (This happened to a work colleague of mine!). Hope this helps. I am totally frustrated. I had to download Netscape to my XP computer for work. I saw that they have the most updated version of IM. I tried numerous times to download it and I keep getting error messages that say there is an interruption with my ISP service. I looked at their help section and tried different phone numbers...but it still happens. Can someone please tell me how to load AOL IM on my xp machine. I'm totally frustrated. Many thanks. Kathy
In this case you can get the update one of two ways. 1> Turn on automatic updates and allow your computer to download the SP2. You can find directions on how to do this here. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/windowsxp/updates.aspx 2> Go to the Windows update web page and install the SP2 from there. Janet, Glad to hear you haven't had any problems. Works and Office are two different products. You can check the Works home page and see if there are any updates or add-ons that you may want to download. http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/default.mspx There is a 7.0 update and Clip Gallery Update listed. Anthony, you message is a little unclear. In what way do you mean "unable to get it on to my computer"? Are you unable to download it? Are you unable to install the download if you managed to get it on to your computer? Have you received the password from Legacy? Perhaps the download is "faulty" - have you tried downloading it again? The normal procedure for installing any program into Windows, is to shut down all running programs and then use ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. Have you followed that procedure? For what it is worth....Those passwords so important that they need to be protected (i.e. bank accounts, paypal, ebay. etc.) are in my head...memorized. My concern with only memorizing important passwords is the care and feeding of my survivors (still a youngster at 62, but...) I place all my passwords in my hard copy and digital survivor files, one with my wife another with my son. They are in a code that is very easy for 'them' to remember so a casual observer still won't know the passwords.
