    1. Non-responsive Excel File
    2. Marie Peer
    3. About two weeks ago I wrote asking about a stubborn Excel file with census compilations that I have stored on a floppy disk. I may not have been specific enough about the problem for any of you to recognize what the problem might be and what solution might work. I want to try again to see if anyone has an 'Aha moment' and gets me straightened out before I spend hours reentering all of that information. The Excel file stored on the floppy disk was created by the excel program currently on my computer, so I don't think there's a compatibility problem between the excel file and the excel program that should, theoretically, be opening and reading it. When I try to open the excel file with census entries, I get a message that says I can no longer access it. I don't think the floppy is bad because I can access another excel file that is on the same floppy. The exact message I get is "(file) cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding." When I go on to something else, the floppy drive continues to cycle on and off, making noises that make me think my computer is maybe still trying to open the file. This continues for as long as the floppy disk is in the A: drive. Although I didn't make this file read only, it seems that files somehow magically become 'read only' so I right clicked on the file and went to properties to be sure the file had not become read only. It hadn't. But even then, if it had become read only, why couldn't I open it? I'm not trying to change it when I simply want to open it. Does anyone know why a file wouldn't open if it is designated read only? My second thought was that the file lost its file association so I right clicked on the file, clicked 'open as', and clicked on excel as the program to use to open the file in order to renew the association of that file to the excel program. That didn't help either. Then I thought that maybe only sector/s of the floppy that hold that file are bad, so I tried dragging that file from the A:/ directory to my Documents folder on C:/ drive on my laptop. That accomplished, it still wouldn't open... even going through the steps of checking to be sure the read only status had somehow been magically changed and then trying 'open as'. I got a message "File format is not valid" despite trying to open this as an excel document. Wouldn't that restore the file association to excel if that is what was lost? I am using Windows 98. Are there any additional steps I can try to get this file to open and be accessible? What do you think might be causing this to happen? What am I missing that will enable me to open and access this file? Thank you so much for thinking about what might be wrong and what I might try to be able to access this file. 3. I have this problem once in a while with my Gateway desktop. I have installed something, maybe my HP all in one printer that messes things up sometimes. This works on my desktop, my HP notebook and will probably work on a Dell too. Check the book, trouble shooting or problems on shut down, probably. Until you find the solution, you can wait a bit after it hangs, maybe a minute or two, at least until you don't hear or see any Hard drive activity, then press and hold the power switch until it goes off. It will cause some delay booting the next time, but causes no namage to the computer as long as nothing is being written to the hard drive. I think that's why you have to hold the button so long, to make extra sure the hard drive isn't working. Alfred D. 3. What subject? There was no subject heading. Yes, I know I can find out by reading the message, but it should have more than just "Re: [Gen-Comp-Tips]" in the Subject line. As to the topic, building a website: I use The Master Genealogist (TMG) as my genealogy program. It will put out reports in html code, but a better way for me was purchasing a TMG companion product, SecondSite (SS). SS reads my TMG data and builds a beautiful website with the options I choose. So far I haven't put it on the web, but I have put it on CDs to send to cousins. A great way to share my data with family. 3. If it is a new laptop, contact Dell technical help. They have done very well by me several times when I've had a problem with the speakers on the old computer or the cord needing replacing on the laptop. (Next day replacement each time!) I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with XP Home on it and haven't had a problem with it, other than the cord. It is my main research computer since it is newer than the desktop (which runs Windows 95). Outlook Express is set as the default email client in internet explorer, Exactly how to resolve this depends on what version of IE you are using, but essentially the solution is to go into internet settings options - in IE6 it is tools/internet options/ then choose programs and set default email client. 3. You can get free web space from rootsweb. http://accounts.rootsweb.com/ With a rootsweb account you do all the work! You can either design a page yourself using html coding, or you can use a editor to design a page which will do the html for you. There are many, many editors available in all price ranges. MS WORD is also an editor if you have that. After you are given your freepage accounts you will automatically be on the freepages help mailing list where there a lots of nice folks to guide you along. Another free web site host is yahoo's geocities. http://geocities.yahoo.com/home/ Geocities has an online editor called Pagebuilder that once you get the hang of it is easy to use. Geocities is very limited in how much space (bandwidth) you are allowed. If you need more space -- yahoo will offer more but you will need to pay for it. Rootsweb freepages accounts can only be used for genealogy sites. Geocities is open to all hobbies and topics. > > Rose Core wrote: > > >Hi List, > >I have been working on my family tree for several years now and would > like > >to know how to create a rather nice site. Sometimes when I am researching I find some very good looking and create sites. Can someone please tell me how to go about getting one. I know Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com both have theirs, but I am talking about something more creative. Your help is appreciated! 3. Yes, the latest Firefox is good. However, it is not from Opera, but Mozilla. Opera started out as a research project in Norway's telecom company, Telenor, in 1994, and branched out into an independent development company named Opera Software ASA in 1995. Opera Software develops the Opera Web browser: http://www.opera.com/ Mozilla project was launched by Netscape in 1998 as an open source project. Firefox is the most recent innovation. The Mozilla browser is still available also: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ All three of these browsers are worth using. 3. That is correct, Maureen it will look ok on your computer. However, compare the size of your HTML message with the same message content sent in plain text (try that). You will find that the message is a minimum two thirds larger and may even be twenty or more times larger than a similar message in plain text. You will have received by now the content of the web page you found difficult to read. I copied that and reproduced it in plain text and sent it off-list. I hope its content gives you a better, detailed explanation of the problems with HTML in messages. However, there are no hard and fast rules - you may use any format. All I wanted to do was make you aware of the problems HTML can create for many recipients. It looks just like any other message except the paper is pretty and the typing is easy to read. I still have no idea what you mean. Maureen --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. 3. My computer crashed about a month ago. Now that I have things set up again I am having trouble trying to send email from a website that lists email addresses for research or help with family history. When I hit the email address, up pops Outlook. I use Yahoo for my email, and it used to come up. I imagine it is very simple, but what am I doing wrong?
