    3. Several possibilities often mentioned in the Opera browser forums (http://my.opera.com/forums/: 1. Adware installed from web sites, usually due to using Internet Explorer browser. This junk eats memory and CPU cycles, while sending your browsing habits to the advertisers. See this thread for adware removal programs. I use both Ad-Aware and Spybot. http://my.opera.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63734&highlight=adware+removal 2. Hard disk becomes fragmented. The disk heads whip all over the disk, taking lots of time and shortening the hard disk life. Use your Windows disk de-fragment program regularly. I run mine while I'm at church on Sundays, or overnight a couple times a month. 3. Slow browser, such as Internet Explorer. Fast alternates include Opera (http://www.opera.com) which is my favorite, Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org), or Netscape (http://www.netscape.com). 4. More obscure possibilities include poorly-written anti-virus programs such as Norton Systemworks (try searching Opera forums on keyword "NOD32" for a better one, or "virus" for others), too many programs running in the Windows system tray, and too many programs running in too little memory. Under normal circumstances, a disk reformat isn't needed, unless some adware program has trashed Windows. Adware removal, de-fragmenting, and uninstalling little-used programs is usually sufficient. I would just try to reinstall Windows, before I reformatted the disk. I haven't reformatted or reinstalled Windows for 4 years. Is there some way I can check to see if the paths are messed up - sorry, not the right technical terms, I know. It seems to be working way too hard to do routine things like load windows. Would Norton Systemworks help, or can someone suggest something like that to help me. Or is it time for a reformat? Running Windows XP, the computer is only 1 yr old. I just sent an important one to a church to research something for me last week. It is not in my sent, delete, nor inbox. I did a search for it on Outlook Express, but can't find it. I don't know what I am doing but it is gone. I know that I didn't delete it and I know that I sent it because the e-mail address shows up when I click on "TO" as having sent mail two that address. 3. Outlook Express is set as the default email client in internet explorer, Exactly how to resolve this depends on what version of IE you are using, but essentially the solution is to go into internet settings options - in IE6 it is tools/internet options/ then choose programs and set default email client. You may have to ask yahoo support for exact details. Thanks for the help and thanks to all others who helped with this problem. Yahoo sent a download that fixed the problem. 1. Next week's Oxfordshire FHS meeting
    2. Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held next Monday 4 October 2004 at the society's usual meeting venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. This is a computer meeting, when members of the society's Computer Group Panel (plus maybe one or two other folks) will give demonstrations of "More Handy Little Programmes". Doors open at 7.00pm, with the presentation starting at around 7.30pm. "More Handy Little Programmes" is a follow-on, hence the word "More", to the demonstration held on 4 June 2001, when the Computer Group Panel presented "Useful Little Programmes". The write-up of this earlier presentation is still available on the society's website, by clicking on the hyperlink at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/met.html That should give a flavour of the kind of thing that might be on offer next Monday ! In addition, several other write-ups of past computer meetings can also be accessed from that page. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get there, see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html For a list of future meetings of the OFHS see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Any queries, please contact me off-list. 1. PRINT SELECTION
    2. Mal Parr
    3. Firstly, thanks to all the kind people who contacted me re the above problem. I've since discovered that if I highlight a selection in a Word document the 'selection' facility in the Print box becomes activated, and I can then print it out. This also works for Excel and Rich Text files, but not for Notepad or Text files, and most annoyingly of all, it still doesn't work for email messages. And another puzzle is that I get a different print box up on the screen (after hitting Control + P, or File - Print) for a Word document, than for an e-mail message. For Word, the box has the following print options: Page range; All; Current page; Pages; Selection (activated) When trying to print selections from my e-mail, and once again hitting either Control + P, or File - Print, the print dialog box that appears on the screen has only: Print range: All; Pages from; Selection (not activated) My mail system is Netscape Communicator 4.7 Any further suggestions will be most welcome, Mal, W. Australia

    3. I have several programs that I downloaded and installed from CDs: PAF5 Companion, Famly Tree Marker 7.0 ,Family Quest Digital Microfilm , AncestryView, and Family Quest Digital Microfilm. Will any of these interfer with installing SP2 or will they not interfere? I'm on dialup but I have the disk for all, including SP2. Would it speed up the installation if I uninstalled them, and can I successfuly reinstall them after I've finished SP2? What programs might interfere with SP2? If you want to reply offline, that's fine. Pat
