    3. Dora FTM - go to File, then Preferences, then click on Date tab. You can set the year for double dates, etc. here. This will take care of the 1696/7 issue. You can say Bef(ore), Aft(er), or Bet(ween), or even Abt (about). You may have a problem entering 1581/1590/1608, and I don't know what you would do about that! Since these seem to be estimates or guesses, they perhaps don't qualify as facts? Patricia Page BC Canada

    3. Hi Dora I have FTM Ver 16. The following dates are accepted 22 Feb 1636/37 bef 12 Jan 1807 aft 1810 Bet. Jan 23 - Jun 04, 1819 You can do 3 date facts for 1581/ 1590/ 1608 and 1680, 23 Jun 1681, or 5 Aug 1681 They are not hidden in the notes but right on the facts page. I am sure they would not import and would have to be done individually. I think that is true of all software. They each do it different. I am not able to import Quicken into Peachtree. It will import most but not all info. Peggy

They run a growing network of genealogy and family-related websites, including: * Ancestry.com * Ancestry.co.uk * FamilyTreeMaker.com * Genealogy.com * HeritageMakers.com * MyFamily.com * RootsWeb.com In addition to the sites above, MyFamily.com also runs FamilyHistory.com, which contains some basic free information, but is mostly a portal to Ancestry.com. History In May 1996, Infobases, Inc. invested in Ancestry, a 13-year old print publishing company, and became its managing shareholder. Infobases later acquired 100% of Ancestry from its original founder, John Sittner. By July 1997, Paul Allen and Dan Taggart were running Ancestry as a company independent from Infobases and began building the world's largest online genealogy database and subscription service. Ancestry.com changed its name to MyFamily.com in November 1999. MyFamily.com launched in December 1998, becoming one of the fastest growing community web sites in history, gaining 1 million registered users in its first 140 days. Led by CEO Curt Allen, the company raised more than $90 million in venture capital from investors such as Intel, CMGI, AOL, Kodak, Compaq, Sorenson, Esnet, Vspring and Tango Partners. According to the New York Times (Oct 2002), sales for 2002 were projected at $62 million. 2003 sales were $99 million. It is believed that Infobase Ventures still holds a large percentage of stock in this privately-held company. 3. Dora Yes, you can print it out. With everyone in my database, it's a ridiculous size. However, I can, for instance, print out my Gr-grandparents ancestral tree (specifying 4 generations back) and it prints spouses and descendants for both of their ancestors which is kind of neat. I do have Version 2005, so not sure what the earlier versions will do. I know the all-in-one tree started with about Version 7. Patricia Page BC Canada

    1. [GEN-COMP-TIPS] PAF Companion, Brothers Keeper and TCGR include all spouses and stepchildren in ancestor reports
    2. Dora Smith
    3. I've run up against a strange and unexpected deficiency in most of the more popular genealogical programs. They don't print all the spouses and all the children in ancestor reports. They most often argue it is prohibitively difficult, but they have no trouble including that informaiton in descendancy reports. People need to know what programs they can use to print all the family information in ancestor reports, and knowing people have ways to get their complete ancestor reports could shake the software developers into fixing their act. This is one of those strange critical deficiencies about which people have been complaining for years, and they're stone deaf. The existence of effective competition typically has wondrous curative effects on deafness. The following is from an ahnentafel chart by PAF Companion. Really an ancestor report. The formatting does not come through well in text format. --------------------------------------------- 20. Eli5 Thompson , born 4 Dec 1770 in Mill Creek, New CAstle, DE; died 19 Sep 1840 in London Britain, Chester, PA, son of 34. Daniel Thompson and 35. Elizabeth Chambers . He married (1) on 11 Jun 1798 in London Grove, Chester, PA 21. Elizabeth Wilson , born 16 Jul 1777 in "of" London Grove; died 11 3rd mo 1803 in New Garden Mtg, Chester, PA, daughter of 36. Ephraim Wilson and 37. Elizabeth Johnson ; (2) on 19 Aug 1806 in New Garden, Chester, PA Sarah Scarlett , died 1 Mar 1859 in London Britain, Chester, PA. Notes for Eli Thompson settled in White Clay Creek, it may have belonged to New Garden at the time as part of New Garden was absorbed into London Britain. b 2/4/1770 MC settled WC m (1) LG m (2) 1806 NG d 9/19/1840 Inconsistency of dates and a registration omission leave it unknown which of the two wives was Ezra's mother. It strongly appears that Ezra's mother was Elizabeth Wilson, who died giving birth to him or soon after, in early 1804. Eli Thompson b 12/4/1700 Mill Creek m (1) 6/11/1798, Elizabeth Wilson m (2) 8/19/1806 Sarah Scarlett Settled in WC, I don't now when, d 9/19/1840, family records at New Garden mm. Eli seems to have been a very quiet person. I don't know what role he may have played in his meeting. But he signed the wedding certificate only of one of his brothers. This means the only wedding he ever went to of his small, close-knit community was that of one of his brothers. All present signed a Quaker wedding certificate, and that was almost always alot of people; usually from half to most of the members of the meeting. Notes for Elizabeth Wilson Elizabeth Wilson b 7/16/1777 d "11, 3rd mo, 1803" (New Garden meeting records) Translate: January 11, 1803. I think it possible she really died January 11, 1804, but so far cannot confirm. If she died in 1803, Ezra was born to a ghost, or else illegitimately several years before his father remarried. This is exactly how it is recorded in the New Garden meeting records, and because it appears to be mistaken, it is important to preserve it exactly as the Quaker clerk wrote it. The Quaker calendar differed from the English calendar by two months, and I've never seen an explanation of what happened when the Quaker and English calenders were in different years; people must have gotten very confused constantly. Further, people write the previous year all of the time when writing dates in early January. I think she really died on January 11, 1804, the only logical way to account for Ezra's birth in 1804. Eli didn't marry his second wife until August, 1806! Ezra's birth is not recorded in the New Garden records, though a Miller genealogy says Ezra was a son of Eli, and Eli passed some of his land on White Clay Creek to Ezra upon Ezra's marriage, and both naming patterns and patterns of family political participation as well as the fact that Ezra became an Orthodox Quaker make it clear that Ezra was close kin to Eli. I suspect Elizabeth died of giving birth to Ezra. Her death is recorded, but they would have had a funeral, the abnormally quiet, probably depressed father forgot to register the birth of his son! In addition, Ezra's birth is not recorded at ANY Quaker meeting, to anyone- and he was a Quaker. Children of Eli Thompson and Elizabeth Wilson were as follows: i Joel4 Thompson , born 12 Jun 1799 in London Britain, Chester, PA. He married (1) on 11 May 1829 in New London, Chester, PA Rachel Spencer , born 14 Jun 1803 in prob New Garden, New London, Chester, PA; died 24 Feb 1851 in New Garden, Chester, PA; (2) bef 1827 in Chester Co, PA Mary Matlack (Hickman) , died in West Chester, PA. Notes: settled in New Garden Township. ii Daniel4 Thompson , born 13 Mar 1801 in London Britain, Chester, PA; died 25 Jul 1868 in London Britain, Chester, PA. She married bef 1826 in New Garden, Chester, PA Beulah C. or G. Hughes , born 1802 in Chester County, PA; died 1882 in London Britain, Chester, PA. Notes: Daniel and/or Ezra were the elders of the London Britain (Orthodox) Meetting. The London Britain meeting was Orthodox and starteda t about the same time as the Mill Creek Hicksite Meeting, the leader of which was a James Thompson, another member of this clan. But the Hicksite/ Quaker split was about the developing middle class (who were assimilating into the mainstream) vs traditional farmers with a more traditional outlook who in fact opposed the developing Capitalist economy as a threat to their livlihoods. Eli was one of the sons of his father whose sons and grandsons were upwardly mobile, and they went with the minority in rural Chester County orthodox position. The Orthodox Quakers held something fairly closely resembling ordinary Protestant church services, and adopted a belief in the Trinity, the Hicksites maintain to this day their traditional Quaker ways of thinking and mode of worship. 10 iii Ezra Sr.4 Thompson , born abt 1804 in London Britain, Chester, PA; died 1873 in London Britain, Chester, PA. He married prob 1832 in prob London Britain, Chester, PA Mary Webster Miller , born 17 Nov 1808 in New Garden, Chester, PA; died 1887 in London Britain, Chester, PA, daughter of John Miller and Mary Webster . iv Joshua4 Thompson , born 20 May or Jul 1786 in New Garden, Chester, PA. Children of Eli Thompson and Sarah Scarlett were as follows: i Mary4 Thompson , born 15 May 1810 in London Britain, Chester, PA. She married in 1827 in Spencer's Mtg, New London, Chester, PA Jeremiah Starr , born in New Garden, Chester, PA. ------------------------------------------- PAF Companion is made by Prodigy, though sold by LDS. It can be obtained on CD's with PAF for $8.46, at present. I paid $15 for it several years ago. A trial version that can print three generations can be downloaded for free, and you can then purchase a key to unlock full functionality from LDS by phone. PAF itself is completely free, if you download it. Prodigy makes Companions for several other common genealogical programs, and sells them. From teh examples it looks possible that they will do exactly what PAF Companion will do. Two other programs that include all the spouses and all the children for each ancestor on ancestor reports are Brothers Keeper and The Complete GEnealogy Reporter. Both are utilities that work from GEDCOM's. Brothers Keeper ancestor reports look exactly like PAF Companion's ahentafel, except that you have to do most formatting yourself in a text editor, and long irregular dates are truncated. It does successfully import and print out dual dates and dates that consist of three letter abbreviations followed by a year. TCGR does handle dates correctly. I found its format confusing, but some may find it useful. I don't fault programmers for different styles; only for idiocy. :) Yours, Dora Smith Austin, TX [email protected] -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. FTM's all-in-one tree will print all spouses and descendants. You may, however, wish to control the number of generations showed. Patricia Page BC Canada

    3. Gene I have sent you the URLs direct on where you can receive FTM advise. Since you have FTM 4.0 it could be a case where your current OS program such as Win 2000 or Win XP do not recognize FTM 4.0 since it was published long before these operating systems were on the market. John

    2. I have the 4.0 version of FTM. Long before CD-Roms. My computer continues to tell me the file is open, I can't find just where it is lurking.

    3. Downloading is fetching a file from the big computer high in the sky. (the internet, usually) So, you have successfully reinstalled FTM. Knowing Which version might help someone help you.) And you cannot LOAD your file or restore your backup. What steps are you taking? File > Restore from Backup -- Browse to folder holding the FBK file and double click on the one you want.-- Give it a place to live and change filename if you want. Where along the path does it go wrong? and what does go wrong there? do you get any error messages? Where are your backups? on a floppy, CD or the hard drive? Your path may vary, this is the way FTM 6 does it. Alfred D. 3. I am hoping someone more knowledgeable on this subject comes forward. My understanding is that when you send your FT file to a backup disk or floppy it becomes read only and you have to go to properties and change the setting. Not sure this is right since I have never had to return my backup files to my HD. If you do not get a good reply there is a BB that you can post questions to it and you will get expert advise on FT. Let me know and I will provide the URL to you. John in California
