I googled for you and got this article--which appears to be just what you need. _Using a Wireless Laptop at Work and at Home_ (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/tabletpc/expert/russell_tabletlaptop.mspx) Bob
My switch is on the side of my laptop. I could not get my wireless to work and, somehow, that switched had gotten turned off. This is a Toshiba laptop. IF my memory serves me right there is a list like this one specifically for FTM so you may get more help on that list. Paul, I followed your instructions. My process tab shows only the security system running. I am about ready to call a computer tech to make a house call. gene
If you copied the family file from a CD to your computer's hard drive, it will probably have the write protect, or read only, attribute set. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the file on your hard drive, Right click on the file, select properties and remove the checkmark from the read only box and then try it. Alfred D. Can SKS tell me how to save my email messages on a CD. I had a hard drive crash recently and lost all my emails. Brenda
Did not work
Hi Gene There are two specific lists for FTM that may have the answer for you if you have not solved it as yet http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/ May be an answer in their archives? I don't know if this will help, but, at the same time, hit the "ctrl shift esc" keys. Then when the window opens, click on the "Processes" tab. Find your open file. Highlight it, then click "End Process". Then you should be able to open the file. My computer tells me a file is "open and in use". Yet I can't find the file or I would close it. Help gene
As you use Outlook, Microsoft can provide you with a backup utility (free): Microsoft Office Assistance: Using the Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup tool http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010875321033.aspx?mode=print There is also some helpful advice on this site too: Outlook Backup Tutorial http://www.sitedeveloper.ws/tutorials/outlook.htm There are shareware applications available, too, which can do a more thorough job. I use this one: Backup Outlook and backup Outlook Express using premier backup solutions from AJSystems. http://ajsystems.com/ Another which I haven't tried is: Outlook Backup - BackRex Software http://www.backsettings.com/outlook-backup.html Another approach to take would be to look at backing up everything by using an imaging application such as Acronis True Image. This is an excellent product and very easy to use: Hard disk drive cloning and image backup software: computer files and disk copy http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Wed, 18 Oct 2006 11:48:39 +1000 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] BACK UP OF EMAIL MESSAGES > > > Can SKS tell me how to save my email messages on a CD. Hello Gene Turn your comp off and then back on. If that doesn't do it then turn off your virus checker and reinstall FTM. Make sure not online. Then reboot again. Should be ready to go now. Peggy > My computer tells me a file is "open and in use". Yet I can't find the > file > or I would close it. Help
Gene Try filling in the first open page of the new FT file and then close it. Then see what happens when you open it up again. If the new page comes up with the data you posted then go to the top of the page click file, then open, then hope you have more...... I know it is frustrating, but give the list a chance to reply, I think most of the list use "D" which means they get one posting each day with all the single posting for the day included. If any of you remember I am the person that had the computer crash several weeks ago. I had downloaded my backup disk but it would not connect with anything. It was left floating in space. I was advised to get a new program. Today I installed my NEW FTM # 16. I have a beautiful blank family page. When I hit the old FTM file I am told this file is "open and in use". Can any of you computer literate people help gal? I have never felt so stupid. gene
Gene. You may have to explain what you have done. Like did you install the new FTM first. What steps did you take to install the old FTM files? Did you have more than one old file? Have you checked under "my computer" then "your documents", then under "ftw" to see which files you have? If your old FT file is listed click to open it and see what happens. These are just things to keep you busy until someone comes along that knows what they are doing. (:=)) John <SNIP> > Today I installed my NEW FTM # 16. My old Brother laser printer has cranked out miles of paper for me. Now it is in dire need of a drum. At office supply/computer stores a new drum is about $175. That is more than I paid for the printer! I see remanufactured ones on the net for far, far less. Anyone had any experience with such? I've never purchased anything from a 'net store'. anne
Or another way of looking at it: try the remanufactured drum. If it works, that's good, and you can continue to use your printer as long as you have your computer, maybe longer. If the remanufactured drum breaks the printer -- well, new printers don't cost as much as they used to. I recently bought a HP laser printer for $99. We would have spent that much on the inkjet cartridges that would have been needed to print a pile of family group sheets.
