    3. Having the Desktop icon in the Taskbar (or using WinKey+D) allows you to quickly return to the Desktop when you have a number of applications open. This may be handy if you need to access a file or document you have saved on the Desktop. It can also be handy if you are at work and you don't want to let your employer see just what you are up to when he/she walks in unexpectedly <LOL>! > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Mon, 30 Oct 2006 18:06:14 -0600 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Desktop Icon added to Task Bar > > What exactly do you do with a desktop icon on the task bar? > > Maybe I'm missing something. 2. Melissa Skinner
    3. Hello all Have just joined your list as I need some advise. I started researching our Family Histories just over 2 years ago, a month after I started I purchased the Genie program RootsMagic. Now, I don't have any problems with this program & it does all that I want in every other way, except that I would ideally love to be able to record addresses in the different fields as apposed to having the complete address on the same field. My reason for this is that I can then search not only by just the suburb or country etc, but then I can search by either street or church or hospital etc within a suburb or just the street/church/hospital alone. Does any other program out there have this facility? 3. You can also quickly access the Desktop at anytime, simply by holding down the Win Key and then press the D key. 3. That's what programs like Ghost or Acronis, or even disk manufacturers' utilities like Seagate's DiskWizard, are supposed to do. The instructions say that you can "partition and copy data to external drives...". I know these programs do work for desktop computers where two drives can be installed at the same time. But I haven't (yet) seen anyone state unequivocably that the process works with laptops, with one internal and one external drive. If anyone has done this using Ghost, Acronis, or preferably some free software, I'd be interested in hearing about it. 2. Frankie Heinzmann
    3. Is there any way to search a directory full of GEDCOMs for specific contents? I have a several GEDCOMs in a directory and I wanted to separate those that I had created from those that had been sent to me or downloaded by me. I thought if I used the Windows XP Explorer search function to look for my phone number or street address, I could narrow down the list. The search always returns "no results". I thought maybe Windows didn't know how to open the .ged files so I set them to open with notepad, then with WordPad, and then with MS Word. The result is always "no results". Am I missing something about the MS search function? Is there a simple program to search GEDCOMs for words/phrases? Thanks, Frank

    3. I use Textpad (www.textpad.com) a lot when I'm in Windows. Textpad itself is a very powerful text editor, but its "search and replace" function includes the ability search for text in all files in a directory. What you want is "grep" for Windows. Here are a couple of references to free versions: http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/grep.htm http://www.tucows.com/preview/401897 I've never used either of these, so I can't say how well they work. 3. The Windows Search is very basic and would not "delve" into the text of files such as a GEDCOM. There is an application which will do a thorough search for any word or phrase you specify but it is not freeware. It's called Super Text Search: http://www.galcott.com/ts.htm. I have used this over a number of years and it is very through. You can download it and trial it on your GEDCOM files. The trial is not blocked in any way, so if you only need it for this one specific exercise, you may not need to buy it - but I didn't suggest that :-). There are several other applications (as this search page reveals) which you may care to consider: http://tinyurl.com/y9hx3z > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Sun, 29 Oct 2006 19:33:18 -0600 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Windows XP Search and GEDCOMs > > Is there any way to search a directory full of GEDCOMs for specific > contents? > > I have a several GEDCOMs in a directory and I wanted to separate those > that > I had created from those that had been sent to me or downloaded by me. 3. Hello all, Depending on your home computer set up, I'm currently using my Vonage phone service and my network to record phone interviews with family members for the purpose of creating a family history. Of course I disclose that I'm recording the call so they know what I'm doing. It was a lot easier to set up than I thought. Here's a link to show the software that I use to record the calls (http://www.gadgettrail.com/vonage/hackingvonage.html).
