The Win key is the one betweenCrlt and Alt on the left hand side of the space bar, there is also one after Alt on the right hand side of the space bar, they have the windows symbol on them, and it does work, I tried it this afternoon, thank you for that! Hello On my keyboard it is in-between the ctrl & alt keys. It is the key that has the windows logo, but is only white and not coloured. I hope this makes sense. I found it. When you right click on start and choose properties, you can check if you want the quick launch bar to display or not. They you keep deleting icons until finally the Show Desktop one appears - unless there's an easier way. Well, I just learned the answer to that in the process of not finding out how to add this desktop icon to my task bar. In Windows XP, if you right click on the start icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen, you can choose taskbar properties. It lets you choose if and how you want to display all kinds of things - everything in God's green earth except teh desktop icon. But what does disconnect safely mean? Does that mean, this is what procedure I follow to unplug a scanner I seldom use from its USB port without the driver uninstalling itself? Thank you all for your tips. I found and installed a Google desktop gadget but it seems less than perfect. It seems to miss some of the strings. Anyhow, I decided I needed to put it on my ToDo list to connect all the GEDCOMs to my sources. Trevor, I've never had a Memory Stick (Sony trademark) so I don't know the details, but I believe Memory Sticks have some "extra" software; maybe part of that is trying to be "helpful" and find pictures for you. Other types of flash memory don't do that, as far as I know. Did you have to load a special driver for your Memory Stick? --there may be an option in there to disable the searching. Or, I think some photo organizing software (Google Picasa, perhaps) has features that search your whole system for new images every time it's activated. You can probably disable that, if you don't want it to run every time. Kraig --- Trevor <[email protected]> wrote: > Thanks Craig. I am a bit scared of my memory stick! Removing a USB device without "shutting down" is not supposed to cause any physical damage; it's designed that way. That doesn't mean it can never happen -- the design may be faulty and not meet the specifications, or there may be extraordinary circumstances where damage occurs. But USB devices are supposed to be hot-pluggable -- they can be plugged in and unplugged without shutting the system down. Data loss can happen when the computer is merrily tranferring data to the USB memory, without a clue that you're going to pull the plug before the transfer is complete. Doing the "Safely remove..." routine gives the computer a chance to finish. The icon for "Safe to Remove Hardware" , appears to have dissappeared from the left hand side of my taskbar at the bottom of my screen. I have clicked on the arrow to extend the list of icons, but it is not there. I wish to disconnect my printer from my laptop safely. Can someone please tell me how to find it and replace it on the task bar?? kind regards Rita _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Messenger has arrived. Hi Dora, I get to the Desktop with 1 click from the taskbar, rather than several clicks, by reducing each page, as I always have several pages open at once. regards Rita >From: "Dora Smith" <[email protected]> >What exactly do you do with a desktop icon on the task bar? > >Maybe I'm missing something. So, is this saying that this is the worst thing that will happen, is lose of data? That there is no damage to any of the equipment? Thanks, Donna But you can remove the memory stick anyway; you just risk losing data that's not completely transferred. Kraig
No. A memory stick should bring up the icon. If it doesn't, something's wrong. But you can remove the memory stick anyway; you just risk losing data that's not completely transferred. You don't need to "Safely remove" a USB printer. Just unplug it. If it's a parallel port printer, shut down the computer first.
