    3. I am sure there is someone out there that is less qualified on a computer than me. So far I have not found that person. I need a bit of help. I have purchased a few genealogy research files from the Latter Day Saints. For some reason over the past few years I have had individual disks in these sets crack on me. It starts at the hole in the middle of the disk and extends about a half an inch into the data contained on the disk. Most of these disks are in sets. I can not order just the disk I need to replace. I must order the whole set. I tried downloading the disks to my computer, that did not work. I now have been provided with instructions from the LDS on how to download these disks to my HD. One of the steps requires me to make changes to the computer register. My son who lives a long way from where I am has told me "don't mess with the register". He is an mechanical engineer and works with a number of computers. He does piggybacking best I can tell he links the different type of computers to do his work. Getting off track here. Anyway he says the register is something I should stay away from. So no downloads to PC. The answer to my problems seems to be make copies of the original disks, put them away and use the copies to do my research. I need a very simple coping program. Most that I have read about do just about everything but make a cup of tea. My question is does anyone know of a simple copy maker? I am not interested in it doing anything other than coping CDs. 3. Rita, One more thing. If your new HP has XP Pro, then you have a Microsoft Office trial version that will have Word in it. But, at the end of the trial period you will have to buy the permanent version or lose use of it. 3. They are mainly caused by conflicts between programs/drivers and the Microsoft operating system. Microsoft would probably argue that you take a risk whenever you use a program/driver that has not been certified as being compatible. The suppliers of said programs/drivers may argue that it costs too much to gain such certification and that the risk to user (you and I) is acceptable. Personally, the more I pay for software, the more I require such certification. If I use such as freeware - I take my chances. Chris
