    3. The census takers wrote the names the way they heard them. I had one ancestor whose name was Lodema and the census taker wrote it as Rodina. It took me a long time to realize there wasn't a person named Rodina. http://www.geocities.com/fcruble/velmasfamilygenealogy.html ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 13, 2006 7:16 AM Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Errors in Ancestr... > > Errors are not always the fault of the transcriber as the original could > be > an error. 3. The census? Not Ancestry's fault - unless when you look at the actual census document you can see that they mistranscribed it, which is easy to do. Those documents are often not easy for anybody to read, adn certain letters, like n and s, are frequently misperceived. Our ancestors couldn't spell their names and often couldn't pronounce them either, and they often changed their names in quixotic ways. Census takers often mangled them. My own ancestry is full of examples. You can report Ancestry.com's errors to ancestry.com, but no way to fix errors in the census! Spelling problems and variations in ancestors' names is a common problem. You just ahve to be aware of it and search for various ways teh names might have been spelled. I have more ancestors I couldn't even find until I asked for help from people better at it, or even people expert on that family group who were albe to tell me the mispellings and variant forms that had been used with that name. Some of them are pretty wild. 3. Shirley, I have a subscription to ancestry.com. Send me the incorrect and the correct information and I will see what I can do. In the 1930 census, the census taker misspelled my father's and mother's first name. Lucky they, my grandparents and uncle and aunt were living side by side. He/she (I don't remember now) spelled Otis as Odis and Mamie as Mammie, go figure. It didn't help that my brother was a Jr. Hazel At 04:02 AM 11/13/2006, you wrote: >I too have found wrong info in Ancestry databases. 3. I too have found wrong info in Ancestry databases. As I am not a subscriber, am not allowed to address the issue? The mistakes I found on one census file is awful. My Mothers family, had her fathers middle inital wrong, three of the children's names spelled wrong, (if you look at the actual microfilm you can enlarge it and see that the spelling is wrong), so how does one get this fixed? If so, don't blame Ancestry.com, the error is the fault of the person who submitted the tree. If the name and/or e-mail address is given, e-mail the submitter. Look on the right side of the tree: "Edit person's info" and you can add the correct info, "Contact Ancestry members interested in this person", try to find other researchers to see if they know the submitter. 3. Well, I suppose I could always repost my complaints every week.... FTM has gone so far downhill that I actually put more energy into complaining about Rootsmagic and Legacy, for which there is more hope. The kindest thing that can be done for the public wehre FTM is concerned is to urge people to stop buying it. Atleast unless they want a little gimmicky program that doesn't do much. We could all do genealogical software review pages and put them on our web sites. Grin. I compiled extensive information on the ownership history of FTM and its group, and how to contact the officers, adn the possible major shareholders. It is definitely true that the best way to get through to FTM is to embarrass them by telling new users how much more other programs can do. It's the only thing anyone has ever known to work. That has not, however, apparently prevented the program in general from going sharply down hill.
