    3. You will find there are two schools of thoughts on this. Some writers advocate leaving a computer on 24/7. Others are just as adamant about turning the machine off when not in use. Like any machine, parts will wear out. The computer does not have many "moving" parts - drives and fans would be the sum total. The fan will run as long as the computer is switched on. The hard drive on the other hand will be almost dormant if the computer is not being manually used. Fans have bearings and are subject to wear - how long is anybody's guess. The electronics in a computer will wear out over a longer (hopefully) period of time. They are subjected to a surge of power each time the computer is turned. Leaving the computer on 24/7 means they are not subjected to this surge. Then of course, cost comes into the equation. If the machine is on, it's chewing up power. So, if your household budget can stand it, this cost may not be a factor in the decision to turn off the machine when not in u! se. If you are watching "the pennies", turning it off will help keep to a budget. I don't think anyone has determined just which situation is best in prolonging the life of a computer - turning it off or leaving it on 24/7. But if you choose to leave it on, remember the computer does need a re-boot on a regular basis to ensure its keeping everything ship-shape. As for me, well mine usually goes on first thing in the morning and stays on (if I am home) until the evening. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Fri, 29 Dec 2006 08:36:31 -0500 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] HIBERNATE IN WINDOWS XP > > On 11/28/06, n.east <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> Hibernate is useful because it saves the status of your Windows XP >> "session" (all the programs and documents you have open) to the hard >> drive, >> so it can automatically restore it the next time you power up. Choices range from never to a number of hours. How should that question be answered to preserve the life of the computer? I turn off my computer between ten and eleven p.m. and when home, I turn it on again about eight a.m. I turn it off when a severe lightning storm arises. 3. It won't print from the color cartridge if the color cartridge is either out of ink or the print heads or whatever you called them, which are the part of the cartridge that applies the ink to the paper, are dried or blocked. This could easily happen if you haven't printed much in color in awhile. Try soaking the print head in alcohol and running the cleaning cycle a couple of times to see fi that helps. I THINK the print heads are on the cartridge in HP printers. I had a printer that my sister ahd given my mother, that the print heads were seperate, and when they clogged regularly, since I didn't print much in color, you could use an entire SET of ink cartridges before you had them unclogged. I looked in my WORD 2003 and can't find any setting for printing in color. There is a setting for printing images and background colors. I don't know what the other program you're using is. Just to test, try to print something that has color pictures off teh Internet. You may also be able to run a basic nozzle or print quality check on your printer. I can send you the files from a W98 Startup disk if necessary. There are 24 files that take up 1.14 MB. 2. I could not open them through IE either. What I did was do a search for all files which had the .art extension. I then opened them one at a time with AOL and then saved with the .jpg extension. It was a pain to do but better safe than sorry in the future. I had no clue about this potential problem until this conversation started. Thank you.
