I'm not following - why would a GEDCOM be trying to open in a FTM archive viewer? Archive viewers are for viewing documents, not GEDCOM's. What you do with a GEDCOM is import it into an existing database, after opening that database, or else create a new database and import the GEDCOM. I would think even in FTM, Hoagy Capitol of Genealogy programs. FTM has more problems than one can shake a stick at. You might try downloading PAF for free from the familysearch.org web site, and try to open it with that. With PAF, you first create or open a database, tehn import your GEDCOM. Even if the only purpose of the database is to view that GEDCOM to see what is there before you possibly mess up your actual genealogical database with it. PAF is a very down to earth and versatile program. It ought to be able to open the GEDCOM even it if is old or created in an unusual coding. On the other hand, I actually have Legacy, so I know how to specifically use it to open a GEDCOM. It doesn't sound like you are following the procedure at all. To view a GEDCOM with Legacy, you must first open or create a database to view it with, then import the GEDCOM, selecting the appropriate choice of what you are importing from teh menu. I'm using WordPerfect 12. I want to create & print a one page announcement. 3 different colors will be used for text. Can I make a colored background? Can I color the background in a text box? If anyone can tell me how to do so....I will be one Happy Little Critter! Thanks, all. annie
External hard drives work just like an internal hard drive in most respects. You can use a backup program to backup files to it. You can use "drag and drop" in Windows Explorer to copy files over onto the external drive. You can work with files saved on an external drive just as you would normally. Some external drives come with software which allows "one touch" backup - yours obviously didn't (neither did mine :-)). So, if it is working fine, there is nothing else you need to do except keep making good use of it :-). If you do have any queries, you will probably find a user's manual in PDF format on the CD which came with the drive. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Sun, 7 Jan 2007 20:01:27 -0800 (PST) > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] New External Hard Drive - Need Help > > Early this evening, I purchased a new External Hard > Drive (Western Digital-My Book), 160GBs, installed the > drivers (I am a Windows 98 SE user) ... then connected > the HD to the computer ... then saved a huge folder, > most of my copies of census records (jpeg files), onto > the new HD. Older versions of Family Tree Maker were a real pain with GEDCOM files I always found. Thankfully, things have changed with FTM and they moved into the new century as a user-friendly application. So it could be your new found relative's FTM is of an older version. Have you tried importing it into a new blank file in Legacy? Do you have GenVIEWER or even GenVIEWER LITE to examine the file - http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/genviewer_lite.htm ? > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Sun, 7 Jan 2007 16:02:23 -0500 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] unable to open gedcom > > I just received a ged com from a gentleman who has matched my cousins > DNA, and I cannot open it. Early this evening, I purchased a new External Hard Drive (Western Digital-My Book), 160GBs, installed the drivers (I am a Windows 98 SE user) ... then connected the HD to the computer ... then saved a huge folder, most of my copies of census records (jpeg files), onto the new HD. I can read them using, for example, Adobe PhotoShop. As far as I can tell, everything is working perfectly. The HD came with no back-up instructions, no software. No instructions or recommendations for installing system files. What should I un-do, re-do ... to this new external hard drive? Thank you, Becky
To save your printer's ink supply, I would suggest you buy colored paper to use as the background, rather than print a whole page of color. You will, of course, have to be selective as to the colors you choose to print on that paper. Another option, if you shop around, is that you should find in a good office supply store, some attractive selections of preprinted stationery too - Geopaper from Geographics offers a great selection. On the Geopaper you can print your invitations, newsletters or even business letters. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Sun, 7 Jan 2007 21:00:32 EST > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Word Perfect 12 and color... > > I'm using WordPerfect 12. I get a small amount of SPAM most of which are html touts for penny stocks. i forward them to spam detector at Verizon but it does not seem to do any good. I would rather just use the delete key with list messages rather than dealing with the Digest. And, John, PLEASE, copy the subject line of the message you are replying to from the digest and paste it into your reply. bob gillis John Contratto wrote: >It was interesting to read the different problems list members have with >SPAM. bob gillis wrote:"Either assumption is incrorrect." Sorry Bob my experience tells me otherwise. With rootsweb archives spammers pick up all our email addresses - as a point of interest I use an alias for rootsweb on all lists and I get much, much more spam on the alias than on either of my other two genuine addresses. It was interesting to read the different problems list members have with SPAM. I use to have problems with SPAM even though my ISP used a SPAM program. Then I got the idea of using Parental Control on one of my Email accounts. I use this account for most of my Internet experiences. For it to work with Rootsweb mail lists I had to subscribe to "D" listings and not "L". "L" listings are sent to subscribers using the Email address of the original poster, which makes the "L" subscribing list ineffective. The "D" lists carries the mail list address. By adding this Email address to my parental control "do not block list" I now have a SPAM free account. I also have another Email account that has temporary parental control thanks to a friend giving my Email address to a company that ropes in people by offer a bonus prize to my friend. The ads read send friends Email address to them and they would in-turn contact the friends and give them each a FREE USB adapter. Well the SPAM messages pored in. So for a few months I need to use parental control on this account. I could have changed the address, however I don't like being forced to change my account address because of someone else's actions. I guess I am a bit stubborn. (:=)) John

That's an interesting statement: "Either assumption is incorrect". How do you know :-)? Let me relate some experiences to you which may reverse your decision. A good friend of mine, also a Rootsweb member (at that time), observed some years ago that spam was becoming a major problem. As an experiment, he subscribed to several lists with new email addresses, not using for names in the address, anything that resembled an English word. Those addresses were only used with the particular Rootsweb lists, nothing else. It was only a matter of time before spam started arriving at those addresses. Interesting, to say the least, isn't it? When he wrote to me about this experiment, I too used a couple of new addresses exclusively with Rootsweb just to test it. And similar to my friend's experience, spam commenced within a short period of time. As a result of our experiences then, I stand by my original statement: No matter what service you use, your address will eventually be subjected to spam, and more especially if you subscribe with that address to a Rootsweb list. The reason behind spam arriving to addresses used with Rootsweb lists is reasonably simple. Rootsweb archives are freely available to anyone (try it by accessing lists you are not subscribed to). Each message can be displayed with not only the sender's address, but any other addresses in the thread they are replying to. If you conduct a Google search on a genealogically oriented word or phrase, you invariably have presented to you many messages gleaned from Rootsweb lists. In many cases such messages contain names, addresses and even telephone numbers, innocently included by well-meaning listers. This makes it a simple task for "harvesters" to glean those email addresses and any other pertinent, interesting personal details. Rootsweb lists are not the only source of addresses for spammers. Spammers use many means to generate lists. One of the easiest ways is for them to use popular ISP addresses and have a "generator" add common first or last names or both to the front of say "@verizon.com" or "@hotmail.com", etc. They get a lot of mis-hits from these extensive, generated lists, but most times there will be someone using an address with the generated name, somewhere in the world. And away goes the spam. You won't stop spam. I can't stop spam, nor even government legislation will stop spam. We just have to be aware that once we expose an address to the Internet world - no matter where - spam will arrive. We can take preventitive measures to make sure spam is filtered out, but it will still keep coming. My "Spam" folder is currently showing four items now. I will clear it when I finish this message, but I know later this evening there will be others to replace them - just a fact of life. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Fri, 05 Jan 2007 09:10:29 -0500 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Free or inexpensive email filter > > n.east wrote: > > >No matter what service you use, your address will eventually be > subjected to spam, and more especially if you subscribe with that address > to a Rootsweb list. >> > > I can't tell if you are saying that subscribing to rootsweb causes you > to get spam or that you get spam though rootsweb. Hello List I only joined your list a few days ago. I didn’t actually think I would ever contribute. I have been using Spamfighter for about 2 months now, I find it great, they have a free version and also you can upgrade to the subscribers version. Once you sign up you are able to use the subscribers version free for 30 days, then you choose to either subscribe or go back to their free version, I was so impressed that I subscribed. My understanding of how it works is it wont stop you receiving spam, but if their system recognises that the email is spam, it will automatically put the email into their Spamfighter folder for you to delete. If they don’t recognise the email as spam you are able to "block" / send it to them so when all others who use Spamfighter receive that email it will be acknowledged. I have pressed the "block' button many times, but I have also received many email in my Spamfighter folder. I feel more secure using these lists now, I do receive about 20 a day thru to my desktop & probably another 20 that are picked up by my ISP. http://www.spamfighter.com Cheers Melissa CHAPMAN - Leicester Eng, CHILDS - Hampshire Eng & Australia, COLE - Kent/Sussex Eng & Australia, DUNK - Sussex Eng & Australia, GANNON - Roscommon Ireland & Australia, HOGARTH - Australia only, HOUGAARD - Denmark, HOOK - Huntingdon & Kent Eng & Australia, LANGTON - Leicester Eng & Australia, MONKTON/MONCKTON- Kent Eng & Australia, REILLY-Antrim Nthn Ireland & Australia, SKINNER - Kent Eng & Australia, TEGG - Surrey & London Eng & Australia -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of DJohnson Sent: Thursday, 4 January 2007 7:52 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] GEN-COMP-TIPS From: "K Jones" <[email protected]> >> The most we can hope for is an email filter that keeps up with the spammers.<< Hi Can someone recommend a free or inexpensive email filter please?
