There are two ways of "backing up". The most common way is to use Windows Backup or one of the many shareware applications. They are fine for backing up important data files. If you have the setup CD's for all of your installed applications, you don't really need to backup applications - only the data they produce. A more certain way is to use an application which creates an "image" of your drives, particularly your OS. Yes, you can reinstall your OS if you have the setup CD's but in that event you lose all of the settings you have added over time to the OS. You do have a "fresh" OS, but it means re-installing all of your other applications so that they are registered with your OS. I use Acronis True Image as I have XP PRo, but unfortunately it does not work with 98. BackUpNow! is one application which will work with 98 and help you either backup or create images of drives or partitions on drives. I have previously used BackUpNow! and it is an excellent application. So if you do want to do a thorough job of backing up, use both images and backups: http://www.argentuma.com/backup/software/backup-now.html There is a slection of freeware appliactions here which may help: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml These sites have some help on understanding backups and images: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BRZ/is_8_23/ai_109665176 http://www.backupcritic.com/software-buyer/file-versus-image.html > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Tue, 9 Jan 2007 11:43:10 -0800 (PST) > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] New External Hard Drive - Need Help > > Hi, > > Guess I wasn't clear with my original questions. > > INRE new External Hard Drive > > I purchased it, primarily, to use as a back-up for my > data. Hello All, As a result of installing the new external HD: - I've been cleaning up the main HD: - Filing docs into folders and subfolders - Deleting files that are not needed - Then copying or cuting and pasting onto the new external HD Please keep in mind that I am working with a Windows 98SE operating system. I've just noticed that *most* data files, on the main HD, have new icons and the file attributes have changed. For a couple of examples: - The usual JPEG icon now looks like a .txt file icon (lined notebook page, spiral rings at the top) with an ink pen. The file extension is still JPG, but most files have are read only, when I look at the properties. - The usual Word.doc icon now appears as a light blue square with a ? mark in the lower right corner. These files have also been changed to read only, when I look at the properties. - I have more examples, if needed. Does anyone have any clues as to *WHY*, the above, has happened? The only other things I have done, within the past few days, is (1) I attached the new external drive and (2) Over the past weekend, I defragged the main HD. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do next ... to *FIX* the icons and attributes? Thank you, Becky PS This computer holds several thousand documents and photos representing about 5 years of genealogy research.
Kraig, Thank you. Perfect answer with a reason that I can understand. So ... on to transferring thousands of files and figuring out what to delete from my overloaded main HD. Are you asking whether you should load the applications and operating system on the external drive? If so, the answer is probably "no" for speed and many other reasons. If you are asking about making a backup copy of the OS and applications on the external drive, the answer is also probably "no". Most applications and OS's cannot be just copied or restored from a backup device unless you are using special backup software that makes a disk copy. The reason is that the installation process sets many pointers and registration entries that are difficult to restore. The best backup for applications and OS's is to keep your original install CDs. Now, if you downloaded an install file, you can and should keep it on your backup. You should also backup any databases, and other files you have created. Hope this helps! No. External drives are fine for storage, but the USB interface is way too slow for applications or operating systems. A while back (6 months to a year) my HP 5P LaserJet needed a new toner cartricge. The price at OfficeMax was about $85 for a new one and $55 for a refurbished one. For some unknown reason I found an ad for PrintPal and their price was $37.50. But there was a coupon type deal that reduced the price to $28.50 and that included shipping. I ordered from them and received it in a few days. During those few (2? 3? 4?) of waiting I received 4 emails from them tracking the progress of my order. The cartridge is working just great (but I've only used it for less than a year) and their customer service was outstanding. I have a card from them that is supposed to save 10% on my (or your) next order if you go to the following website: www.printpl.com/card10 Remember that YMMV. Would like suggestions of sites where I can buy printer inks & toners, and office supplies. Rather than pick a site at random, I'd rather have a recommendation from someone who has used a site and know it is reliable. David, on this list, told me of one several weeks ago, but that email vanished. Thanks, all. annie

You could try importing the gedcom into Excel either directly if you are lucky or via your word processor. Check and correct the excel version before loading into Legacy. Alternatively see if you can both talk to each other via RTF (rich text format) or CSV (comma separated variable) files You may still need to import via excel. Tigger

http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com GENViewer is a wonderful program for opening GedComs from various genealogy programs. I have used it for years. There is a free version on this site; the full program has a lot of other features. Thanks to everyone who answered my plea. I followed the directions given me, and wallla…..The ged Com of my cousin is in my Legacy program. The Family Tree Archive Viewer is something from days gone bye, when census and other info was available on CD, and for some reason it always opens up when I try to transfer info. I also installed Genviewer lite, so I should be covered in all situations. So….then I converted some other gedcoms, just waiting for me to get smart enough to do it…..smile….THANK YOU…. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Pauline - it is quite possible the file you received is labeled as a GEDCOM but is actually a FTW (Family Tree Maker) file. This often occurs if file extensions are hidden. The file you have may actually be filename.GED.FTW If you are still having problems, e-mail it to me off the list and I will try to convert it for you.
