Greetings: I am promoting a conference at the College of William and Mary (September 11-13), "Transatlantic Slaving and the African Diaspora," which I think would be of interest to your subscribers, particularly since the conference marks the publication of a CD-ROM database-the culmination of a 30-year, international research effort-containing information about two-thirds to three-quarters of all transatlantic slave voyages attempted between the late-sixteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. The database will allow historians and others to explore critical themes raised by the new data-including African resistance, shipboard experiences, and age and gender structure of the slave traffic-and provides a major tool in improving our understanding of the African Diaspora and Atlantic history. The conference website is: http://www.oieahc.h-net.msu.edu/slavecon.html While I wanted to alert your subscribers to the conference, I hope they can help me by recommending names of newspaper and magazine reporters who cover African-American history and culture and would be interested in covering the conference. Thank you. Amy Ruth University Relations The College of William and Mary Williamsburg, Virginia 23185 757-221-2628-phone 757-221-1021-fax akruth@facstaff.wm.edu
